AI is revolutionizing numerous industries, and education is no exception. Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat is an AI chat designed to enhance productivity and creativity across various Microsoft 365 applications. Copilot Chat, along with agents-specialized AI assistants-takes the power of generative AI a step further by allowing customization and the ability to work alongside users. This article explores the benefits of using Education Copilot Chat, its features, implementation, and impact on students, educators, and institutions.

What is Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat?

Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat is an AI chat available at no additional cost with Microsoft 365. It includes web grounding, the latest language models, file uploads, Copilot Pages, IT controls, and enterprise-grade privacy and security. This version of Copilot is a large language model whose starter prompt, “ask me anything,” is fitting for a classroom environment. It employs advanced AI algorithms such as GPT-4o to assist users in generating content, summarizing information, and streamlining tasks. It uses a multimodal model that supports text, image, voice, and file inputs. The basic version of Copilot operates similarly to ChatGPT, using GPT-5 technology to answer questions and generate content, including images.

When a Microsoft 365 Copilot license is added, Copilot Chat becomes more powerful by drawing on Microsoft Graph, working directly in productivity apps, and offering comprehensive agent access plus advanced management and analytics. For those licensed for Microsoft 365 Copilot, use of agents published to Microsoft 365 Copilot is included in their license.

Availability and Licensing

Copilot Chat is available at no cost for users with a Microsoft 365 A1, A3, or A5 license when signed in with their school or work account. It is currently available to faculty, staff, and higher education students aged 13 and older. Microsoft 365 Copilot is available as an add-on to Microsoft 365, and a qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription is required to purchase Copilot.

Copilot Chat will be generally available for students aged 13 and older this summer and administrators will need to take additional steps to grant access based on their institution’s plans and preferences. Microsoft 365 Copilot will be eligible to purchase as an add-on for students aged 13 and older with a Microsoft 365 subscription later in May 2025.

The Copilot Control System (CCS)

The Copilot Control System (CCS) spans three functional areas critical to the administration of Copilot and agents: security and governance, management controls, and measurement and reporting. Additionally, CCS is grounded in the existing controls and commitments we manage on behalf of our Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Chat, and Microsoft Copilot Studio customers. It also includes enterprise data protection commitments, built-in safety and governance controls, and responsible AI services.

Agents in Copilot Chat

In education, agents can be tailored to have a particular expertise-whether it’s instructional design or individual student preferences-and can leverage institutional data to offer relevant insights to educators and administrators. The ability to build and add agents to Microsoft 365 Copilot is included in the Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Agents can also be accessed and used in Copilot Chat, priced on a metered basis.

Agents built in Copilot Studio can integrate data, take action, and be deployed across multiple channels-pay only for what you use. It’s quick and easy to create customized agents in Copilot Chat.

Benefits of Using Agents

Agents in Copilot Chat offer ways to enhance and streamline daily activities, including:

  • Providing immediate support: Answering commonly asked questions using data sources and helping navigate institutional resources in real-time.
  • Generating tailored content: Creating materials based on specific instructions and reference resources, whether it’s a study guide, lesson plan, professional development, or school communication.
  • Testing knowledge: Building agents to help students succeed in their classes by designing them with specific instructions and materials.
  • Uncovering and diving into insights: Instantly summarizing, analyzing, and exploring insights across multiple files or a folder of knowledge.

Creating and Managing Agents

Creating and managing agents directly within Copilot Chat is designed to be seamless, and enterprise data protection helps keep the experience secure.

Creating an Agent:

  1. Select “Create an agent” in the right-side pane of Copilot Chat to open the agent builder.
  2. Use the chat to describe what you’d like your agent to do. Include the style and tone it should use while completing tasks.
  3. If you’d like to make improvements or changes to your agent, you can add documents, data, and files to its knowledge base.
  4. When you’re happy with your agent’s output, you can publish the agent for you and others in your institution to use.

Agent Templates

Microsoft 365 Copilot comes with a set of agent templates that are ready to use and perform a wide range of tasks to help support users. Select “Get agents” in the right-side panel of Copilot Chat to find agent templates. Users can search for specific agents or simply browse the library within Copilot Chat to find additional agents that work for them.

Examples of Agent Use Cases

  • Answering frequently asked questions.
  • Helping new students navigate school resources.
  • Giving feedback based on existing rubrics or frameworks.
  • Exploring insights from data in accessible ways.
  • Tailoring lessons to specific content, standards, or student needs.

Agent Management for IT Administrators

The key to successful agent management for IT administrators is understanding how agent usage is measured and billed. Each agent’s usage is tracked by the number of messages they handle, and the total cost for your institution is calculated based on the sum of these messages. For IT admins, purchasing messages is straightforward through the Copilot Studio meter in Microsoft Azure, which offers a convenient pay-as-you-go option. Factors such as an agent’s complexity, how frequently they’re used, and the specific features they employ all play a role in determining their message count.

Benefits for Students

Students can now take advantage of Copilot Chat’s AI-powered productivity features such as content generation, document summarization, and creative media generation. Copilot Chat increased student agency, enabled more project-based work, and accelerated a shift to help students truly become learners, not just receivers of knowledge.

Copilot Chat helps to boost student agency, engagement, and AI skills. A study from Microsoft Research found that most students demonstrated remarkable curiosity when using AI, asking sophisticated questions that extended beyond their task at hand and led to deeper understanding. Students used it to ideate, receive immediate feedback without judgment, design multimedia projects, identify and fix code errors, adjust content based on their preferences or pace, and manage their time.

Benefits for Educators

Educators shape curriculum, advocate for students, innovate on the frontlines, and more-all at the same time. Copilot is a game changer for standards-aligned lesson planning as teachers can radically reduce the amount of time they spend developing lessons. Educators can also use Copilot Studio to push productivity to the next level by building agents that can be programmed to autonomously complete certain tasks.

In Brisbane Catholic Education, participating educators saved over 9 hours per week in administrative and planning tasks, allowing more time for enhancing student experiences and wellbeing. Educators noticed Copilot Chat helped keep students engaged, immediately receive and act on feedback, improve their research and analysis process, explore counterarguments, and build AI skills that they’ve already begun using to their advantage in the hiring process and even teaching to their employers in part-time jobs.

Institutional Benefits

Institutions are deepening the use of AI to advance their mission and prepare students for the future while also beginning to demonstrate the potential of agents to transform experiences across teaching, learning, research, and operations.

At the University of South Florida, the IT team has built agents to enhance campus experiences and support for topics like travel policy, the IT help desk, or events such as student commencement. Student Ambassadors built agents for several departments resulting in decreased manual reporting time, expedited inventory analysis, and improved content creation workflows. Their Microsoft 365 Copilot users are also already seeing efficiency gains with Researcher and Analyst to support tasks like annual report development, procurement, billing evaluation, and budget reviews.

Data Protection and Security

Copilot Chat and Microsoft 365 Copilot offer enterprise data protection, the same enterprise terms available in Microsoft 365 offerings. This means Microsoft secures your data, your data is private, your existing Microsoft 365 access controls and policies apply, you’re guarded against AI security and copyright risks, and your data isn’t used to train foundation models. Copilot Chat has built-in safeguards to help ensure institutional data stays protected.

NIU's Microsoft 365 license provides faculty, staff, and students with Commercial Data Protection when you access Copilot and sign in with your NIU Account ID.
