Navigating Transient Student Enrollment at Florida's Colleges and Universities
Florida's higher education system offers a wealth of opportunities for students. For those already enrolled in a Florida state college or university, the transient student program provides a flexible way to take courses at other institutions within the state. This article outlines the requirements, application process, and important considerations for students seeking to enroll as transient students in Florida.
Understanding the Transient Student Concept
A transient student is defined as a student who is actively pursuing a degree at one Florida state college or university but wishes to take a course or courses at another state institution. This system allows students to broaden their academic horizons, access specialized courses, or fulfill specific program requirements not readily available at their home institution. Florida offers 40 places to shine. Students can mix and match courses from across the state as long as they fulfill state, institution, and program requirements.
Eligibility and Initial Steps
Before applying, students must secure permission from both their home institution and the host institution where they intend to take the course. The home institution holds the authority to grant final approval and determine residency status, which directly impacts tuition eligibility.
If you are attending any college or university other than a Florida public institution, you will need to complete an application for admission with Undergraduate Admissions.
The Transient Student Admission Application
The cornerstone of the transient enrollment process is the online Transient Student Admission Application, accessible through FloridaShines. A separate application is required for each institution a student wishes to attend as a transient, although the application allows for requesting approval for up to four courses.

Required Information for the Application
To ensure a smooth application process, students should gather the following information beforehand:
- Student identification number and PIN/password.
- Social Security Number (or nine zeros if one is not available).
- Term and year for the desired course.
- Course information: prefix, number, title, and credit hours. (If using the online course catalog, this may be pre-populated.)
Application Workflow and Communication
The online application is electronically routed to the student's home institution for approval. Upon approval, it is then forwarded to the host institution. While Florida Virtual Campus facilitates the application, students can monitor the status of their application by logging into the Transient Student Admission Application. The home and host institutions collaborate to manage enrollment confirmation, financial aid disbursement, and grade reporting. If an application is denied, contacting the denying party is crucial to understand the reason for denial.
Important Considerations for Transient Students
- Financial Aid: Students receiving financial aid should be prepared to pay tuition upfront, as reimbursement typically occurs after payment deadlines.
- Deadlines: Checking the host institution's admission deadlines is crucial to ensure timely application submission.
- Residency: Your home institution will also make the final decision on residency that will determine whether you are eligible for in-state tuition. The Florida Residency Guidelines will walk you through the process and required Declaration.
