Navigating Transient Student Status at UCF: A Comprehensive Guide

For students seeking flexibility in their academic journey, the transient student option at the University of Central Florida (UCF) offers a valuable opportunity to take courses at other institutions while pursuing a degree. This guide provides a detailed overview of the requirements and processes for both incoming and outgoing transient students at UCF.

Understanding Transient Student Status

A transient student is one who is currently enrolled and actively pursuing a degree at one institution, but wishes to take courses at another institution on a temporary basis, with the intention of transferring those credits back to their home institution. It is important to differentiate between transient and transfer students. If you are currently a student at another institution and wish to seek a degree at UCF, you are considered a Transfer Student, not a Transient Student.

Incoming Transient Students at UCF

Incoming transient students are those seeking a degree at another Florida public institution who wish to take courses at UCF temporarily.

Application Process

  • Florida Public Institution Students: Students attending another Florida public community college, state college, or university must complete the Transient Student Application through FloridaShines.
  • Non-Florida Public Institution Students: If you are attending any college or university other than a Florida public institution, you must complete an application for admission with Undergraduate Admissions.

Important Information for Incoming Transient Students

  • Registration: All transient and non-degree seeking students must register at 3:00 PM on the Friday before classes begin.
  • Key Offices: The Registrar’s Office processes Residency, Immunizations, and Enrollment Eligibility. The Office of Student Financial Assistance reviews aid and Consortium Agreements (submitted separately).

Outgoing UCF Transient Students

Outgoing UCF Transient Students are students seeking a degree at UCF who wish to take courses at another institution temporarily.

Taking Courses at Other Institutions

  • Florida Public Institutions: If you would like to take courses at another Florida public institution, you can utilize the transient student process. Florida offers 40 places to shine, making it easy for you to take a course at another state college or university as a transient student.
  • Non-Public or Out-of-State Institutions: If you would like to take courses at a non-public Florida institution or a non-Florida institution, you must fill out the Transient Student Approval form.

The Transient Student Admission Application Process via FloridaShines

For students enrolled in a state college or university, Florida makes it easy to take a course at another state college or university as a transient student. You can mix and match courses from across the state as long as they fulfill state, institution, and program requirements.

Application Submission

If you are enrolled in a state college or university, you can request approval to take a course at another state college or university by completing and submitting an online Transient Student Admission Application. A separate application must be completed and submitted for each institution, but you can request approval for up to four courses on one application. If you are enrolled in a private college or university or an out-of-state school, please check with your institution for information and instructions about taking a course at another college or university.

Key Considerations Before Applying

Before taking a course at another institution, it is crucial to obtain permission from both your home institution (UCF) and the host institution. Your home institution will make the final decision on residency, which will determine your eligibility for in-state tuition at the host institution. It is also advisable to check the admission deadline for the institution where you wish to take the course to ensure timely application submission.

Information Needed for the Application

Before beginning the application process, ensure you have the following information readily available:

  • Student identification number and PIN/password
  • Social Security Number (If you don't have a Social Security Number, please enter nine zeros.)
  • Term and year when you want to take the course
  • Course information, including prefix, number, title, and credit hours (If you used the online course catalog to find and apply for a course, this information will be pre-populated in the application.)

Application Workflow

The application will be sent electronically to your home institution (UCF). After UCF approves the application, it will be sent electronically to the institution where you want to take the course. While Florida Virtual Campus doesn't control the application process, you can check the status of your application at any time by logging into the Transient Student Admission Application. Your home institution and the institution where you will take the approved course will work together to confirm enrollment, release financial aid, and obtain your grades at the end of the course. If your application is denied, please contact the person who denied the application for more information.

Financial Aid Implications for Transient Students

Students receiving financial aid must be prepared to pay tuition for these courses. Students will be reimbursed when their financial aid is disbursed which is often after payment deadlines and add/drop periods. Transient hours cannot be used to fulfill hour requirements for institutional programs; programs such as the UCF Grant, UCF Orion, UCF Scholars Award, Knights Opportunity, First Generation Matching Grant, Charge On! 15, and Pegasus Scholarships. Students are responsible for paying tuition & fees to the host institution by their payment deadline. Only courses used to satisfy UCF degree requirements will be considered for financial aid eligibility. Disbursement of aid (if applicable) will occur upon completion of the transient enrollment process. Students may not receive financial aid from two institutions at the same time. Students must decide which of the two institutions is the primary school at which they are degree-seeking and apply for aid there.
