Unlocking Opportunities: A Comprehensive Guide to the Ellis Foundation Scholarship
The Ellis Foundation Scholarship offers financial assistance, guidance, and support to students pursuing post-secondary education. It aims to provide financial peace of mind and make a real difference in students’ lives, giving them a hand up rather than a handout. The result of having someone champion each student and providing valuable advice and support is a graduation rate of almost twice the national average.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria
The Ellis Foundation primarily works directly with high school counselors to identify students who are capable, deserving, and determined. The foundation selects students based on a variety of factors, including:
- Academic Ability: Assessed through the student’s overall grade point average and academic progress.
- Financial Need: Considered to ensure that scholarships are awarded to students who require financial assistance to pursue their education.
- Specific Degree Objectives: The foundation has several degree-specific scholarships for students in Kansas and Missouri pursuing a four-year degree. Culinary Arts/Hospitality Scholarships are also available for Kansas or Missouri students with these specific degree interests.
- Unusual Circumstances: The foundation takes into account any unique challenges or hardships that students may have faced.
- Writing Ability: Demonstrated through the scholarship application.
- Leadership Potential: Evaluated based on the applicant’s involvement in extracurricular activities and community service.
- Merit, Character, Academics, Determination, and Need: Ellis scholars are selected on the basis of these qualities.
Application Process
The Ellis Foundation directly solicits applications from pre-selected high schools. If Ellis Scholarships were awarded at your high school last year, you will receive a notice from us by January 1. The general application opens in January and has a priority deadline of February 17, with the scholarship awarded the following fall semester. The application will be available in January and the deadline is April 15 for the following school year. Applicants need only apply once for consideration for one of The Ellis Foundation’s scholarships. Each application will be reviewed by the scholarship committee.
Once you (high school counselors) have identified qualified students, you will provide us with a list of names. You will then be provided with paperwork to be completed before interviews can be scheduled. The paperwork includes a student-requirement sheet and a release form. All qualified candidates will be interviewed in person or through a video conference.

Endowed scholarships, like the one established by the Shaws, play a crucial role in providing long-term financial assistance to students, ensuring they have the resources needed to pursue their academic goals.
"Endowed scholarships are one of many ways to provide long-term support for our community," the Shaws emphasized. "We would encourage others to take advantage of the opportunities the Community Foundation of Ellis provides for our community." The Shaw family's donation exemplifies their commitment to investing in the future of Ellis High School students excelling in mathematics and science, empowering them to achieve their academic aspirations.
