The University of Essex has a rich history, beginning with the acceptance of a proposal from Charles Leatherland, Baron Leatherland, by the Essex County Council in July 1959 to establish a university in the county. The University Promotion Committee, led by Sir John Ruggles-Brise, submitted a formal application to the University Grants Committee, leading to the acquisition of Wivenhoe Park in December for the new university. The first Professors were appointed in May 1963, marking the beginning of the university's academic journey.
In October 1964, the university welcomed its first 122 students and 28 teaching staff across three schools: Comparative Studies, Physical Sciences, and Social Studies.
