A Legacy of Law Enforcement Training: The Essex County Police Academy
The Essex County Police Academy boasts a long-standing legacy of preparing generations of law enforcement and public safety officers. These dedicated individuals are trained to serve and protect their communities with fairness and dignity. Recognizing the vital importance of this institution, Essex County reacquired the facility from Essex County College and invested over $1 million to modernize and update the Academy. This investment ensures that cadets receive their training and public service education in a state-of-the-art environment, equipped to meet the challenges of modern law enforcement.
The re-opening of the Academy was designed as a model of shared services between government agencies, partnering with local police departments to secure the most experienced and knowledgeable teachers and trainers for the staff. The Academy prepares individuals to become police officers or corrections officers, who will encounter the unexpected and find themselves in emergency situations. Law enforcement officers are first responders, protectors, and peacekeepers, running toward danger instead of away from it. The skills, training, and knowledge received at the Academy are designed to guide them while serving their communities.
The Essex County Sheriff's Deputy Division
One notable example of the Academy's impact is the Essex County Sheriff’s Deputy Division, a unique community outreach program comprised entirely of volunteers. These deputy candidates undergo a rigorous screening process, including psychological testing, a physical examination, and a criminal records background check. Upon successful completion of these preliminary requirements, candidates are nominated and self-fund their participation in the Essex County College Police Academy.
During their five-month training at the academy, volunteer deputy candidates participate in the same law enforcement and public safety courses as regular police recruits. Upon graduation and taking the Oath of Office, these volunteer deputies commit to providing a minimum of 20 hours of service per month for police patrol and other law enforcement duties, with many exceeding this minimum. As sworn members of the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, these deputies possess full police powers to make arrests and issue summonses.

Sheriff’s deputies have responded to various emergencies, including aircraft accidents, HAZMAT spills, power outages, and floods. They are deployed on patrol in high-crime areas throughout Essex County and augment the efforts of the Patrol Division officers within the county park system. Deputies are also regularly assigned to assist the Newark Police Department with traffic, crowd control, and security at venues such as the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and the Prudential Center. The services of the Essex County Sheriff’s Deputy Division are provided at no expense to local taxpayers, as the deputies underwrite the entire cost of their training, uniforms, and weapons. The college is committed to providing students with the skills and knowledge necessary for both further academic pursuits and immediate entry into the workforce. Essex County College changed my life, providing me the skills needed to be a competent Nurse and deal with adversity. I’ve received a life-long career and that can’t be replaced. The training from my professors was priceless. Essex County College opened my mind and eyes, and challenged my world view. I will always be thankful for that. I was uncertain about myself when I came to ECC. But that all changed once I started classes. The college's academic divisions include:
Biology, Chemistry & Physics: This division offers Associate of Science (A.S.) degree programs designed to prepare students for transfer to four-year institutions. The faculty hold advanced degrees in their respective fields and are experienced teachers.
Business: The Business Division provides A.S. degree programs for students planning to transfer to four-year institutions, as well as Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) and certificate programs designed to prepare students for business careers immediately after graduation or to develop technical skills in specialized areas.

Social Sciences: The Social Sciences Division offers A.S. and Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree programs for students intending to transfer to four-year institutions, along with A.A.S. degree and certificate programs for careers in the social sciences.

Mathematics, Engineering Technologies & Computer Sciences (METCS): The METCS Division offers A.S. degree programs designed to prepare students to transfer to four-year institutions to pursue advanced degrees in mathematics, engineering, computer science, and technology. It also offers A.A.S. and certificate programs for students seeking immediate entry into the workforce.
Nursing & Health Sciences: The Nursing & Health Sciences Division offers A.S. degree programs for students planning to transfer to four-year institutions and A.A.S. and certificate programs for health careers immediately upon graduation. The faculty are licensed professionals with diverse academic and professional backgrounds, many holding advanced practice credentials.
Accessibility and Support Services
ECC has an open-admissions policy to students at least 18 years old. Making the choice to continue your education is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make. ECC is regionally accredited, so your college credits are transferable to other colleges and universities. In fact, ECC sends more transfer students to Rutgers University, Montclair State University, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) than any other two-year institution in New Jersey. Of course, many ECC students aren’t looking to transfer at all - they want to quickly enter the workplace with marketable skills. ECC is all about making your college life easier and more enjoyable.

The college also provides comprehensive support services to its students, including financial aid, scholarships, and grants. The Financial Aid Office awards funds from federal and state sources in the form of grants, scholarships, and employment. Remembering Senator Ronald L. Rice, Sr.
The college also honored the life and legacy of the late NJ Senator Ronald L. Rice, Sr. ECC Board of Trustees Chair Marion A. Bolden, a high school classmate of Ronald Rice, called him a “good friend” who cared deeply about his constituents and was always ready to help when asked. The dedication was spearheaded by the College Trustees soon after his death last March. “Today, we are here to celebrate the life of Ronald Rice,” ECC’s President, Dr. Augustine A. “I want to thank everyone who made today possible. You have made my father an integral part of this great institution that he loved so much. Today I feel him smiling down on us, said Ronald Rice, Jr. “I remember my father saying whatever he was able to achieve in life started at Essex County College. Dr. Boakye noted Senator Rice’s long affiliation with ECC. “He was first a student, and then served as President of our Alumni Association,” Dr Boakye stated. “The Senator said be committed to everything you want to do, and don’t be afraid,” Dr. He spearheaded legislation to provide relief for individuals in a wide range of quality of life issues. Dr. Mamie Bridgeforth, Chair of ECC’s Division of Social Sciences, served as Mistress of Ceremonies at the program. She recalled her long friendship with Senator Rice. The Role of the Police Officer at Essex County College
The Police Officer at Essex County College plays a crucial role in maintaining a safe and secure environment for the entire college community. Under the supervision of a superior officer reporting to the Director of Public Safety or designee, the Police Officer is responsible for the safety and security of College properties, faculty, staff, students, guests and visitors during the assigned tour of duty; and is responsible for patrolling the buildings, grounds and adjacent public areas to enforce the New Jersey State laws, and the regulations, policies and procedures of the College.
The duties of a Police Officer at Essex County College include:
- Participating in departmental in-service training, training seminars, and related events as required.
- Conducting training seminars for students, staff, and faculty as assigned.
- Maintaining responsibilities in spite of inclement weather and other similar factors.
