Everest College Transcript Request: A Comprehensive Guide
Navigating the process of obtaining your academic transcript from a closed institution like Everest College can be complex. This article aims to provide a comprehensive guide to help you understand the process, locate your records, and request your transcript.
Record Retention Policies and Regulations
Understanding record retention policies is crucial when dealing with closed institutions. Regulations vary, but generally, institutions are required to maintain student records for a certain period. In California, prior to 2010, non-degree granting schools were required to maintain transcripts for five years, and degree granting schools were required to maintain them for 50 years. However, as of January 1, 2010, schools in California are mandated to permanently maintain transcripts.
Initial Steps: Identifying the Record Custodian
The first step in requesting your Everest College transcript is identifying the current custodian of records. When a school closes, it is obligated to provide a custodian of records - someone students can contact to obtain their transcripts. In some instances, closed schools provide copies of transcripts to the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE).
Check the BPPE Website: If Everest College was located in California, visit the BPPE website (bppe.ca.gov/students/guide.shtml) for information on recently closed schools. The BPPE may have a list of schools whose student records are in their possession. If so, you can use the "Transcript Request Form" available on their website.
Office of Student Assistance and Relief (OSAR): For assistance following the closure of your bureau-approved school, contact the OSAR. This office was created within the Bureau to assist California’s prospective, current, and past students of private colleges. They can provide information about your rights, filing a school complaint, and available resources. OSAR also offers one-on-one guidance to help students access State and federal relief programs, and free nonprofit resources.

Contact Form: If you do not find your school listed on the BPPE website, you can request information regarding the custodian of record by using the contact form on the BPPE website. Provide as much information about the school as possible to help them locate the relevant records.
ECMC Education and Subsequent Custodianship Changes
ECMC Education (formerly Zenith Education Group) was the records custodian for many Everest College/University campuses before closing operations. With the closure of ECMC Education, records have been turned over to new records custodians.
- If your school was acquired by ECMC Group: If you attended a school that was or became known as Altierus Career College/Education, Everest College/Institute, Everest University, or WyoTech that was acquired by ECMC Group, you can locate the new records custodian by clicking on the state where your institution was located.
- Catalogs: ECMC Education has also made available copies of catalogs previously provided by the closed institutions. You can find the catalog link within the state where the institution was located.
Specific Campuses Previously Managed by ECMC Education:
The following is a list of campuses that were previously managed by ECMC Education and for which records custodianship has likely changed:
- Altierus Career College/Everest Institute - Tampa
- Altierus Career College/Everest Institute - Orange Park

ECMC Education also assumed records custodianship for a number of additional closed institutions that were not acquired by ECMC Group. You may need to investigate further to determine the current custodian for these schools.
American National University (ANU)
American National University (ANU) acts as the curator of some closed schools’ student records. To obtain records from ANU, you may need to complete a specific form. However, keep in mind:

- Even if you attended a school for which ANU is listed as a custodian, they may not have a copy of your record.
- American National University does not act in the capacity of registrar and cannot produce official transcripts.
- One form must be filled out per request under one name.
Requesting Transcripts from the Minnesota Office of Higher Education (OHE)
If Everest College operated in Minnesota, the Office of Higher Education (OHE) might maintain student records from closed or formerly regulated post-secondary institutions. This includes:
- Closed private colleges located in Minnesota.
- Closed out-of-state colleges that were licensed or registered with the State of Minnesota.
- Closed schools which may have been regulated by other Minnesota state agencies but used the term College, University, Academy, or Institute in their name.
Important Considerations for Minnesota Records:
- The Minnesota Office of Higher Education does not maintain records for all closed private colleges and training programs. Other schools or entities may hold the records on behalf of the closed school.
- If your school is not on the list of schools for which OHE has student academic records, they do not have your records.
- If your school is still open, OHE does not have your academic records. Contact your institution directly to request your records.
- For records maintained by the Office, you can request transcripts online. There is a fee charged per transaction, and you can order up to 5 copies per transaction.
General Considerations for Transcript Requests
- Five-Year Record Retention: An institution shall maintain all records required by the Act and this chapter and that relate to the institution's compliance with the Act and this chapter for at least five years at the institution's primary administrative location in California.
- Borrower Defense to Repayment: Students who believe they were defrauded by their school or that their school violated state law may be eligible for loan discharge. The law requires borrowers to submit a claim in order to receive debt relief. The Department of Education reviews the borrower’s claim. Some students work with an attorney to file a claim, but this is not a requirement. Students considering filing a claim may wish to call the federal government’s borrower defense hotline at (855) 279-6207.
Additional Resources and Support
- Office of Student Assistance and Relief (OSAR): As mentioned earlier, OSAR provides prospective students information on making informed decisions when choosing a college and also information on their rights when attending a bureau approved private college. OSAR provides current and past students of private colleges information about their rights, filing a school complaint, and resources available to them (including potential reimbursement from the Student Tuition Recovery Fund). OSAR also provides one-on-one guidance to help students access State and federal relief programs, and free nonprofit resources.
