The Legacy of CalArts: Shaping Generations of Visionary Artists
The California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), a private art school nestled in Santa Clarita, California, stands as a unique institution dedicated to nurturing the creative potential of its students. Founded in 1961, CalArts holds the distinction of being the first degree-granting institution in the United States specifically designed for students across both visual and performing arts disciplines. This interdisciplinary approach, inspired by Richard Wagner's concept of "Gesamtkunstwerk" (total artwork), encourages collaboration and cross-pollination of ideas, fostering an environment where innovation thrives. CalArts boasts one of the most impressive alumni networks in the arts and entertainment industries.
A Fusion of Artistic Visions: The Genesis of CalArts
The story of CalArts begins with the merger of two prominent Los Angeles institutions: the Chouinard Art Institute (founded in 1921) and the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music (founded in 1883). Both institutions faced financial challenges. Walt Disney, a longtime friend of Nelbert Chouinard (founder of the Art Institute) and Lulu May Von Hagen (chair of the Conservatory), played a pivotal role in facilitating this merger. Disney, who had discovered and trained many of his studio's artists at these schools, envisioned CalArts as a means to preserve their educational missions.
Walt Disney, along with his brother Roy O. Disney, assembled a team to plan CalArts as a destination school, a feeder for the various arts industries. Robert W. Corrigan was appointed to lead this project. The original board of trustees comprised influential figures from various fields, including Nelbert Chouinard, Lulu May Von Hagen, Harrison Price, Royal Clark, Roy E. Disney, Roy O. Disney, film producer Z. Wayne Griffin, H. R. Haldeman, Ralph Hetzel, Chuck Jones, Ronald Miller, Millard Sheets, and others.
The groundbreaking ceremony for CalArts' current campus took place on May 3, 1969, in the Santa Clarita Valley. However, construction faced setbacks due to torrential rains, labor shortages, and the Sylmar Earthquake in 1971. The institute initially operated from the former Villa Cabrini Academy starting in July 1970.
Academic Restructuring and Growth
Founding president Corrigan aimed to transform CalArts, leading to the dismissal of numerous artists who had taught at Chouinard and the Conservatory. He appointed Herbert Blau as the founding dean of the School of Theatre and Dance and the institute's first Provost. Blau and Corrigan then recruited academics to establish the original academic areas, including Mel Powell (dean of the School of Music), Paul Brach (dean of the School of Art), Alexander Mackendrick (dean of the School of Film), Maurice R. Stein (director of Critical Studies), and Richard Farson (dean of the School of Design).

Robert J. Fitzpatrick became president of CalArts in 1975. During his tenure, the institute experienced growth in enrollment, stabilized its financial position, and introduced new programs, most notably Character Animation and Jazz.
A Hub for Creative Disciplines
CalArts offers a diverse range of undergraduate and graduate degrees, encompassing music, art, dance, film, animation, theater, and writing. The institute encourages students to pursue intensive training in their chosen field while fostering interdisciplinary exploration. Applicants are required to submit an artist's statement, along with a portfolio or audition, to demonstrate their creative potential.
The institute is also home to A113, a classroom where the character animation program (then called the Disney animation program) was originally founded. In 2013, CalArts inaugurated its John Baldessari Art Studios, providing MFA Art students with approximately 7,000 square feet of space for their studies and program courses.
