EA Sports College Football 25: A Long-Awaited Return to the Gridiron

After a hiatus of over a decade, the highly anticipated return of EA Sports' NCAA Football video game, now known as College Football 25, has finally arrived. The game's release on July 19, 2024, marks a significant moment for college football fans who have been eagerly awaiting its comeback since the series ended in 2013 with "NCAA Football 14".

A New Era of College Football Gaming

College Football 25 is not just a reskin of previous versions or a modification of Madden NFL. It has been completely recreated to reflect the modern landscape of college football, incorporating elements such as Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals and the transfer portal.

Release Details and Editions

The game was officially released on July 19, 2024, and is available on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. There are three editions of College Football 25:

  • Standard Edition: Priced at $69.99.
  • Deluxe Edition: Priced at $99.99, includes three-day early access and in-game perks.
  • MVP Bundle: Priced at $149.99, includes early release to Madden NFL 25.

Cover Athletes and Initial Teaser

The game's official cover features prominent college football players such as Texas QB Quinn Ewers, Michigan running back Donovan Edwards, and Colorado WR/DB Travis Hunter. A teaser released in February showcased jerseys from Penn State, Oklahoma, Florida, Notre Dame, and Alabama, heightening anticipation among fans.

Gameplay and Features

Realistic Gameplay and Atmosphere

EA Sports has emphasized creating a realistic and immersive gameday experience. Playing in iconic stadiums like Alabama and Wisconsin aims to replicate the intensity and atmosphere of real college football games. The game is designed to be challenging, with a significant talent gap between top-tier and lower-ranked teams.

Revamped Passing System

The passing system in College Football 25 has been revamped, requiring players to master accuracy, ball power, and ball placement. This adds a layer of complexity, making it more challenging than previous iterations where simply slinging the ball to an open receiver was sufficient.

Dynasty Mode

Dynasty Mode, a staple of the NCAA Football series, makes a comeback with enhanced features. The mode incorporates NIL and the transfer portal, mirroring real-life college football dynamics. It allows players to build a program from the ground up, with a more complex recruiting system that requires strategic allocation of time and resources. Building an elite program takes time, as the game prevents quick powerhouses.

Wear-and-Tear System

A notable addition is the "Wear-and-Tear" system, which introduces a risk-reward balance to on-field actions. Players accumulate wear and tear on their bodies with each hit, potentially affecting their performance and increasing the risk of injury. This system encourages strategic player management and substitution.

Campus IQ

Campus IQ is a term that describes initiatives to give College Football 25 its own identity, making it feel like the college football experience on and off the field and differentiating it from Madden.

Inclusion of FBS Schools

College Football 25 features all 134 FBS schools, each with its own playbook. The game includes home-field advantage, which impacts younger players more significantly. Atmospheres and pageantry were taken very seriously.

Mental and Physical Abilities

Instead of X-Factors, College Football 25 features Mental and Physical abilities. The mentals generally break down to pre-snap enhancements and reveals while the physical abilities expand what you can do on the field with the controller and during the action.

Pre-Snap Recognitions

In College Football 25, pre-snap recognitions is more of a team concept than it relates to a single player. When you hit a button you open windows that allow you to see the composure, confidence, wear and tear and other information about your players before snapping the ball.

New Kicking System

There is a new kicking system and it is a little more challenging than the one in Madden 24. It’s especially tough in a college game that has captured the volatility of the kicking game on that level.

Weather-Impacted Gameplay

Wet conditions (from rain and snow) will lead to more drops, slips, etc.

Revamped Playcalling Screen

The playcalling screen has been revamped. Play art and selections are in the upper right hand side. There is team information at the bottom, but in the upper left, the on-field and stands presentation continues.

Dynasty Mode Features

Dynasty Mode is back, and you can have Dynasty Modes with 32 users online/offline. The new 12-team playoff logic is in Dynasty and Road To Glory. Recruiting is layered and it includes the transfer portal. You can be the Head Coach, Defensive Coordinator, or Offensive Coordinator in Dynasty Mode.

Team Builder

Team Builder returns with more options than before. You’ll be able to upload logos, completely customize rosters, uniforms and stadiums for your created school.

NIL Integration and Player Participation

A significant aspect of College Football 25 is the inclusion of real players through NIL deals. EA Sports offered contracts to over 11,000 FBS football players, providing them with $600 for their participation in the game. Over 10,000 athletes opted into the game by early March 2024.

Compensation and Opt-Outs

Athletes receive $600 each for their NIL, without additional royalties. Players who choose not to opt into a contract agreement with EA will not be featured in the game. While Texas QB Arch Manning initially opted out, he later decided to appear in the game.

Broadcast Team

The game features commentary from well-known broadcasters such as Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, Rece Davis, Kevin Connors, Desmond Howard, Jesse Palmer, and David Pollack.

Missing Features and Limitations

Award Opt-Outs

Several major college football awards, including the Bednarik Award, Davey O’Brien Award, Doak Walker Award, Jim Thorpe Award, Outland Trophy, Lou Groza Award, and Ray Guy Award, have opted out of inclusion in the game.

Roster Editing

You will not have full access to edit every aspect of rosters like before. You can edit some aspects of the players, but you won’t have the complete sandbox you once had.

Coach Editing

You will not be able to edit head coaches of any of the schools in the game-beyond the one you’re controlling.

Draft Class Exporting

You Cannot Export Draft Classes Into Madden 25.

Past Issues and Lawsuits

The discontinuation of the NCAA Football game in 2013 was due to a lawsuit filed against the NCAA and the collegiate licensing company by former UCLA basketball player Ed O’Bannon. The lawsuit challenged the use of player likenesses without compensation. EA Sports initially planned to continue without NCAA branding but suspended production after multiple conferences withdrew their licensing.
