Fiat Lux Scholarship: Requirements and Opportunities

The Fiat Lux Scholars Program is designed to recognize and support talented students in their academic pursuits. This article delves into the specifics of the Fiat Lux Scholarship, outlining its benefits, eligibility criteria, and the requirements scholars must meet to maintain their participation in the program.

Overview of the Fiat Lux Scholars Program

The Fiat Lux Scholars Program is designed to support talented and deserving students. The Fiat Lux Scholarship was established for high-achieving students from partner high schools in California. The scholarship provides monetary, community, and academic support to UC Berkeley students.

Guaranteed Financial Support

A key feature of the Fiat Lux Scholars Program is the guarantee of financial aid. This special honor guarantees a minimum of $100,000 in grants and scholarships over four continuous years at UC Merced. That is a guaranteed minimum of $25,000 in free money per academic year. This predictability helps students and families plan for their college careers, as financial aid awards are traditionally determined annually. The Fiat Lux program ensures that gift aid will not drop below $25,000 each year of participation.

What Constitutes Gift Aid?

It's important to note that the $25,000 minimum is not necessarily a single "Fiat Lux Scholarship." Instead, all sources of gift aid count toward this guarantee. This includes:

  • Pell Grant
  • Cal Grant
  • Scholarships
  • Fee waivers
  • VA benefits

The guarantee is contingent upon unmet need totaling at least $25,000.

Eligibility and Invitation

Fiat Lux Scholars must be invited to join. Scholarship applications are assessed during admissions review. As a reminder, those seeking merit scholarship awards must submit a scholarship application with their application for admission. Applicants must be admitted first-year students who graduated from one of the partner high schools and who attended a partner high school for at least three years. Applicants must also be California residents or eligible nonresidents (AB 540 nonresident tuition exemption). As part of a holistic review process, candidates are invited to a one-on-one interview with a Berkeley faculty member in late March.

Maintaining Eligibility: Program Requirements

Fiat Lux Scholars are responsible for meeting certain requirements throughout their undergraduate academic career in order to maintain eligibility for participation in the program. Students who fail to meet these requirements may lose eligibility for participation in the program. Fiat Lux scholars must complete annual requirements to maintain active participation and eligibility in the program. Please note that each program requirement must be completed every semester. If you have been newly invited to the program, we encourage you to visit our webpage with information for invited scholars.

One specific requirement is that first-year scholars must attend one Fiat Lux Scholars Program Orientation at the beginning of the Fall semester.

Additional Scholarship Opportunities

Besides the Fiat Lux program, students may explore other avenues for financial aid, such as Clark University Merit Scholarships, which cover tuition costs. These scholarships include:

  • School-Awarded Scholarship: Covering 30% of tuition, recipients are nominated by individual academic programs.
  • Dean’s Scholarship: Covering 50% of tuition, awarded to bold thinkers and emerging leaders.
  • Fiat Lux Scholarship (Clark University): Covering 75% of tuition, Clark’s highest graduate scholarship, reserved for the most outstanding applicants.

Clark partners with City Year to provide tuition fellowships to returned service volunteers. Students may be eligible to apply for federal or private loans. A limited number of part-time campus jobs are available for teaching, research, and/or graduate assistantships.

Costs to Consider

When planning for college, it's essential to consider various costs beyond tuition. While merit scholarships like Fiat Lux often focus on tuition, other fees may apply. Please note the following costs reflect the current calendar year and are subject to change.

  • International Student Fee: This one-time fee is assessed to all international students the first time at matriculation. It may be assessed to both graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Graduate Matriculation Fee: This one-time fee is assessed when a student enrolls and matriculates in a graduate program. The fee supports new student welcome, orientation and other onboarding events and programs associated at both the department and university level.
  • Student Council Fees: Student council fees are assessed to all full-time, campus-based students. Fully online students are not assessed this fee. The funds support graduate student council activities at the school or department level. The elected student officers of each council determine the use of these funds. Funds are typically used to support student life activities, travel grants (e.g.
  • This fee is assessed each full-time semester to students in School of Business, School of Professional Studies, and Dept. of Sustainability and Social Justice.
