A Legacy on Ice: The History of Western Michigan University Hockey
The Western Michigan Broncos men's ice hockey team represents Western Michigan University in the NCAA Division I level. As a member of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC), the Broncos have a rich history dating back to their inaugural season in 1973. This article delves into the program's journey, highlighting key moments, achievements, and the figures who have shaped its identity.
Early Years and CCHA Membership
The Broncos officially began their ice hockey program in 1973. In 1975-76, Western Michigan joined the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), marking a significant step in the program's development.
Post-Season Appearances and Early Tournament Bids
Western Michigan's initial foray into post-season play occurred in 1994, signaling a turning point for the program. The Broncos received an at-large bid to the 1994 NCAA Division I Tournament, but their journey was cut short with a 6-3 loss to Wisconsin in the first round. The team rebounded in the 1995-96 season, securing their second at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Blashill and Murray Eras
Under the guidance of first-year coach Jeff Blashill, Western Michigan earned an at-large bid to the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament. Despite a strong effort, they fell to Denver in double overtime, with Denver scoring two goals in the last 4:29 of the third period to force overtime. The following season, 2011-12, saw another coaching change as longtime NHL coach Andy Murray took the helm after Blashill's departure for the Detroit Red Wings. Murray led the Broncos to a CCHA tournament victory, securing an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. However, they were defeated in the first round by North Dakota.
Transition and Great Lakes Invitational Success
The CCHA disbanded after the 2012-13 season. During this transition, Western Michigan captured the 2013 Great Lakes Invitational, triumphing over Michigan and Michigan Tech in overtime. The Broncos continued their tournament success by winning the 2014 Shillelagh Tournament with an 8-2 victory over Union. In 2016-17, the Broncos bounced back from a disappointing season with an impressive 22-13-5 record and a third-place finish in the NCHC. Western Michigan was invited to the final Great Lakes Invitational at Joe Louis Arena, where they defeated Michigan Tech in the championship.

Recent Achievements and the Ferschweiler Era
In the 2021-22 season, Western Michigan achieved a remarkable 26-win season under first-year head coach Pat Ferschweiler. The Broncos shared the 2021 Great Lakes Invitational championship by defeating Michigan State and advanced to their first NCHC championship game, ultimately losing to Minnesota-Duluth. Western Michigan clinched their first 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament and secured their first playoff win in program history by defeating Northeastern.
A Glimpse into the Future: The 2024-25 Season
The Broncos’ 2024-25 season was their best season to date. The Broncos collected numerous wins against top 10 ranked opponents and remained ranked in the top 5 for the majority of the season. On February 28, 2025, WMU defeated North Dakota 6-4 to claim their first NCHC regular season championship. After being down 3-0 in the NCHC Tournament Championship, WMU would score four unanswered goals to defeat Denver 4-3 in double overtime. This would the Broncos’ first ever NCHC Tournament Championship and third overall conference championship. WMU earned the 1-seed in the Fargo Regional for the NCAA Tournament, where they defeated Minnesota State and UMass to advance to St. Louis, where they would play in their first Frozen Four in school history. In a rematch of the NCHC Tournament Championship, the Broncos defeated Denver in a 2OT thriller to advance to their first championship game.
