Tyler Shough: From College Journeyman to NFL Quarterback
Tyler Shough, born on September 28, 1999, is an American professional football quarterback for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL). His journey to the NFL was marked by transitions, resilience, and ultimately, the realization of a lifelong dream.
Early Life and High School Career
A native of Chandler, Arizona, Shough is the fourth of five children born to Glenn and Dana Shough. His parents were students at Arizona State University. Shough's elder sisters attended Hamilton High School in Chandler, where Shough and his younger brother Brady played in the football program.
Shough became the starting varsity quarterback as a junior at Hamilton High School in the 2016 season. Hamilton High School is known for its high-profile football program. He was a consensus 4-star pro-style quarterback by both Scout and 247Sports, making him a highly sought-after player.
College Career: A Journey Through Oregon, Texas Tech, and Louisville
Oregon Ducks (2018-2020)
Shough initially committed to Oregon, joining the Ducks in 2018. The Pac-12 conference member schools began play in November with strict policies regarding testing, positivity rate, and contact tracing for the COVID-19 pandemic. His performance was questioned when the heavily favored Oregon team lost back-to-back games against Oregon State and California. Oregon was selected to the Fiesta Bowl held in Glendale, Arizona, which is inside the Phoenix Metropolitan Area where Shough grew up. The opponent was Iowa State led by quarterback Brock Purdy of Gilbert, Arizona.
Texas Tech Red Raiders (2021-2023)
On February 22, 2021, Shough announced that he was transferring to Texas Tech University. He was named the starting quarterback for the regular season opener. In week 4 of the 2023 season, in the first quarter against West Virginia, Shough appeared to have rolled his ankle on a run then rolled it again on the following play attempting a pass.

Louisville Cardinals (2024)
On December 5, 2023, it was announced that Shough had transferred to the University of Louisville. During the 2024 season, Shough led the Cardinals as QB1 to a regular season record of 8-4, 5-3 in ACC play. On December 11, 2024, Shough opted out the 2024 Sun Bowl between Louisville and Washington to prepare for the 2025 NFL draft. On December 17, 2024, Shough was among three winners for Comeback Player of the Year awarded by the College Sports Communicators (CSC) organization alongside Utah State DB Ike Larsen and South Carolina RB Raheim Sanders.
NFL Career: New Orleans Saints (2025-Present)
The New Orleans Saints selected Shough in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He was signed to a four-year contract. Following Derek Carr's shocking retirement in May, Shough was expected to slot in as the Saints' No. 2 QB behind Spencer Rattler. However, Kellen Moore declared an open QB competition among Tyler Shough, Jake Haener, and Spencer Rattler. Ultimately, Spencer Rattler was named the starting QB over rookie Tyler Shough.
Shough got his first taste of the pros when he took over for Spencer Rattler on New Orleans' final drive in garbage time Sunday. The 2025 second-round pick failed to complete either of his pass attempts in the brief outing.
During the Saints' 28-19 preseason loss to the Broncos on Saturday afternoon, Shough completed 12 of 20 passes for 102 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and rushed twice for 20 yards and a score.
Shough has been exceedingly sharp over his first two preseason games, completing 70.6 percent of his passes with a touchdown and interception.

Player Profile and Potential
ESPN Fantasy Projection noted that Shough was the oldest QB in his rookie class (25), having spent seven collegiate seasons at Oregon, Texas Tech, and Louisville. He completed only 63% of his passes last season and for his career, but has a big frame, good arm and adds some value with his legs (career 196-1,109-11 line). Shough figures to eventually earn starts this season, but even if he's on the field, he's unlikely to emerge as a consistent fantasy option in an offense that is expected to struggle in 2025.
Personal Life
Shough is a Christian. He got engaged and is getting married.
