Virtual International Internships

Fisher College of Business developed a virtual international internship following its canceled global internship program in the spring due to COVID-19. The university announced Oct. 14 there will be no travel abroad opportunities in spring 2021. Dominic DiCamillo, program manager for undergraduate experiential learning programs in the Fisher College of Business, said the Fisher Global Internships: Virtual program was developed after students were unable to reap the benefits of the in-person program this past summer.

Benefits of Virtual Internships

Jeannie Simmons, director of education abroad, said the decision to cancel international travel was deliberately made early enough so students can meet housing renewal deadlines, schedule classes on campus and not make study abroad payments. No one had bought a flight yet, no one had put down thousands of dollars yet. She said the virtual program allows flexibility that students may prefer to in-person global internships, especially when it comes to price.

Procurement Experience: "My internship provided me an opportunity to gain in depth experience in field of procurement. Thermo Fisher provided me a path I can focus my career on where I got to work on live industry level procurement projects where I was able to face unexpected challenges in projects and how we can overcome that challenge. I was able to network with stakeholders to understand more about procurement."

Global Internship Locations

Germany

Undergraduate students can apply to participate in research internship opportunities throughout Germany, working with doctoral students and researchers from various universities. Ohio State students have the opportunity to intern at one of these top seven institutions in Germany, working closely with faculty members on a particular project relevant to students' majors.

Japan

Kyoto University of Advanced Sciences (KUAS) in Japan is an international institution with all engineering course instruction conducted in English. 7.3% of their total student population are international students.

Ghana

This internship program is with UNiTED Projects, a community resource and empowerment center in Kpando, Ghana. Student interns will participate in projects following the human-centered design model, including the following steps, which are repeated over time: research (identifying new problems, continued research), reporting in the form of recommendations to all key stakeholders, project design (including funding proposal and fundraising if applicable), project implementation, project evaluation, adjust project proposal or report project outcomes.

Molecular Genetics
