Life as a Fulbrighter in Ecuador
Ecuador offers a rich cultural and environmental immersion, making it a rewarding destination for Fulbrighters.
Cultural Integration and Experiences
Ecuadorians are very welcoming to Americans, making it easy for grantees to integrate into their communities and enjoy the different customs, foods, and festivals throughout the year. During the weekends, grantees often travel together to visit new places.
Economic Stability and Cost of Living
The Ecuadorian economy is dollarized, which makes it one of the more stable economies in the region. The inflation rate is low. The cost of living is a bit higher in cities like Quito and Cuenca. However, a wide variety of fruits and vegetables are available throughout the year at inexpensive prices compared to international standards.
Here's a breakdown of estimated monthly expenses:
- Housing: Apartment rentals can go from $400 to $600 per month.
- Food: Grocery expenses per person can be up to $200, and a good 3-course lunch can go from $3.50 to $8.
- Utilities and services: Gas, water, and electricity will not exceed more than $50 per month.
- Transportation: Public transportation services (buses, Ecovia, Trolebus and Metro) go between $0.35 to $1.00 per ride. Minimum taxi fare ranges from $1.45 to $2. Uber service is also inexpensive.
Climate
The climate is pleasant most of the year, without extreme temperatures. In the highland region, temperatures range from about 41° to 75° Fahrenheit.

General Requirements
- Applicants must be a U.S. citizen.
- Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree by the award start date.
- Applicants must not have a Ph.D. degree.
- Non-enrolled applicants should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying.
Additional eligibility requirements may differ based on the applicant's country of citizenship.
Restrictions
- Residency in Ecuador is not permitted in the year prior to the grant. The residency is considered 6 months.
- Dual citizens of Ecuador are not eligible.
- The Commission will not select candidates who have previously received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant award.
Language Proficiency
Spanish language proficiency is necessary to communicate on a daily basis. Applicants should include a Language Self-Evaluation in their plans for language study between the time of application and the commencement of the grant. If a Foreign Language Evaluation (FLE) form is required, applicants must have the specified proficiency level by the start of the grant period. Submission of the Foreign Language Evaluation (FLE) form is mandatory, even if you have advanced skills or are a native speaker of the language.
Placement and Location
Grantees are often placed outside of Quito, the capital city, and possibly at the Galapagos Islands. The Fulbright Commission will match the grantee with the appropriate host institution. ETAs will have the support of their designated university tutor to find a safe place to live. If another ETA has previously lived in that city, the Commission will put you in contact with that person.
Supplementary Projects
English Teaching Assistant responsibilities will be up to 26 hours per week; therefore, grantees are expected to engage in other activities related to their personal, career, and/or educational interests. Applicants should consider a project that they intend to pursue if awarded the grant. They should keep in mind that these activities should be flexible respective to geographic location, since they will not know where they will be placed. Remember that the primary activity for ETAs is in the classroom and not carrying out the supplementary project. The Commission may discuss alternative projects with the grantee when the placement is made.
Application Process
To apply for the Fulbright Student Program award, applicants should connect with the Fulbright Program Adviser at their institution. If not currently enrolled at a college or university, applicants will apply through the institution where they last attended, even if they are not currently a resident there. Candidates are required to submit their Fulbright application and provide all supporting documents to their respective Fulbright office per established country/award deadlines. Candidates apply to universities directly and manage their applications with universities directly. Candidates are responsible to submit materials and test scores per each university deadline and application requirements including any associated fees or deposits. IIE is not involved in the application process for self-placed candidates.
