Florida Academic Scholars will receive an award amount equal to 100% of tuition and applicable fees. Applicable fees include: activity and service fee, health fee, athletic fee, financial aid fee, capital improvement fee, campus access/transportation fee, technology fee and tuition differential fee. At FSU, tuition and applicable fees covers the following; tuition, financial aid fee, capital improvement fee, health fee, health plus fee, counseling center fee, athletics fee, activities and services fee, technology fee, transportation access fee, and tuition differential fee for a total of $213.55 per credit hour. If you’re the top Florida Academic Scholar in your county, you’ll also get the Academic Top Scholars Award.
- Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS) Award: This award covers 75% of your tuition and fees. Florida Medallion Scholars will receive 75% of tuition and applicable fees. General Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to receive one of the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Awards a student must:

- Be a Florida resident. To avoid delays to your Bright Futures awarding, please complete a Florida residency declaration.
- Be a US Citizen or eligible noncitizen.
- Earn a standard high school diploma; graduate from a registered Florida Department of Education private high school; earn a GED; complete a home education program; or graduate from a non-Florida high school if specific conditions are met. Earn a diploma from a Florida high school or high school equivalent.
- Be accepted and enrolled in an eligible Florida public/private post-secondary school. You can use Bright Futures at any approved program in the state of Florida, public or private. This also includes community colleges. As long as it is on their list of approved programs, it doesn’t matter whether the school you choose is public or private. Yes! Students attending a private college or university in Florida are eligible to use Bright Futures to help pay for their school. However, the award may not cover your entire cost of tuition at a private school. Bright Futures offers “comparable awards” to private school attendees, meaning it will be a similar cash value to full tuition at a public school. Since private schools tend to have higher tuition, there is typically more of a gap.
- Enroll for at least six semester credit hours. Bright Futures requires a minimum enrollment of 6 credits per semester. To earn a Bright Futures scholarship, students have to be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours per semester. This is equivalent to being enrolled half-time. Full-time enrollment would be 12 credit hours. So, as long as you enrolled for half the credits of what your institution considers full-time, you can qualify for the scholarship.
- Complete community service or paid work hours.
- Not have been found guilty of a felony.
- Apply for the scholarship in the last semester before graduation.
- Students are not required to submit a FAFSA in order to receive both initial and renewal Bright Futures eligibility.
Specific Award Requirements
Now, let’s dig into the requirements for each program. Each Bright Futures program has a different set of requirements, but there are a few that they all share.
Florida Academic Scholars (FAS)
Florida Academic Scholars must hold a minimum 3.5 weighted GPA. Additionally, they must obtain a minimum score of 29 on the ACT, a 95 on the CLT (Classic Learning Test), or 1330 on the SAT. To earn the Bright Futures Florida Academic Scholars award, you’ll need a minimum of 1330 on the SAT, a minimum of 29 on the ACT, or a minimum of 95 on the CLT.
Florida Academic scholars are eligible to receive an award amount equal to 100% of tuition and mandatory or applicable fees. Community Service or Paid Work Hours
To be eligible to receive one of the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Awards a student must complete community service or paid work hours. These hours will meet the requirement for the Florida Academic Scholars, Florida Medallion Scholars or Gold Seal Vocational scholarships. Volunteer Service is defined as assisting where needed and does not necessarily address a social issue. Although these hours are not recorded on the transcript, students can keep a log of these activities for use when applying for college, job applications, awards and scholarships but may not be used for Bright Futures. Paid Work Experience is defined as a job where students earn a weekly or biweekly paycheck and are able to document their work experience through timecards, W-2 statements, or pay stubs. Collect any and all necessary documentation and signatures from the organization where the hours take place.

Renewal Requirements
As a Bright Futures Scholarship recipient, you’ll automatically be evaluated for scholarship renewal at the end of the academic year. However, there are some requirements to remain eligible: All Bright Futures recipients are required to meet minimum credit hour and GPA requirements to renew their award each year.
Minimum GPA Requirements
- Florida Academic Scholars (FAS) - 3.0
- Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS) - 2.75
- Florida Academic Scholars with a 2.75-2.99 GPA at the end of the renewal period will renew as Florida Medallion Scholars. However, raising your GPA above 3.0 during a future renewal period can restore your FAS status using a one-time restoration opportunity.
Annual Credit Hour Requirements
To renew your Bright Futures award each year, you must complete at least 24 semester hours if you’re enrolled full-time for both semesters. Students enrolled full time for both semesters are required to earn at least 24 semester hours in order to renew their award at the end of each academic year.
Repayment for Dropped or Withdrawn Courses
Students will be required to repay their award hours for any course dropped or withdrawn, unless an exception is recommended by the student’s home postsecondary institution, and the student does not receive a refund of fees which would repay the amount due. Repayment for the cost of dropped or withdrawn courses is required to renew a Bright Futures award for the subsequent academic year. Hours repaid for dropped or withdrawn courses are added back to the student’s total semester hours available, and are not included in the student’s total credit hours required to renew the award.
Exceptions and Appeals
Students who did not meet GPA or earned credit hour renewal requirements due to extenuating circumstances may submit a Financial Aid Exceptions Appeal. Supporting documentation of extenuating circumstances beyond the student's control which prevented meeting renewal requirements must be uploaded as part of the Appeal.
Bright Futures Scholarship for Graduate Students
If you’re a Bright Futures Scholarship recipient and graduate with your bachelor’s degree, you may qualify for funding for one semester of graduate study. A FAS or FMS scholarship recipient, who graduates with a baccalaureate degree in seven or fewer terms, or in 105 credit hours or fewer, may receive funding for one term of graduate study, not to exceed 15 credit hours paid at the undergraduate rate. Graduate courses may only be covered by the Bright Futures scholarship (at the undergraduate tuition rate) if they are needed to complete a bachelor’s degree. In this case, the student must submit a memo from the department of their school or college to OneStop indicating that the graduate class that they registered for that semester is required to earn their bachelor's degree.
Maximizing Your Chances
If you are pursuing a Bright Futures scholarship, there are many ways that you can maximize your chances.
- You can start by working to make sure your test scores and GPA are as high as possible.

- You’ll also want to ensure that you fill out the Florida Financial Aid Application before the deadline. Remember, that deadline is August 31 of your graduation year.
- Also, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Look around for other scholarships, and apply far and wide!
