Dr. Minthorn had recently opened Friends Pacific Academy, and Hoover enrolled in the first class shortly after his arrival. Before being elected president in 1928, he served as Secretary of Commerce from 1921 to 1928 and led the Food Administration, followed by post-war relief efforts in Europe. His presidency, however, was largely overshadowed by the Great Depression.
