Celebrating HBCU Legacies: The Nike Air Force 1 "Yardrunners" Collection

The Nike Air Force 1 has long been more than just a shoe; it's a cultural icon. In recent years, Nike has used this silhouette to celebrate Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) through its "Yardrunners" program. This initiative recognizes the profound influence of HBCUs on American culture, sports, and fashion. The Yardrunners collection highlights the deep history and heritage of HBCUs and their alumni in the worlds of culture and sports.

A Sneakerhead's Dream: Dex Robinson's Virginia Union University Air Force 1

Dex Robinson, a celebrity stylist and designer, has transformed his lifelong passion for sneakers into a tangible tribute to his alma mater, Virginia Union University (VUU). As a member of Nike's Yardrunners debut class, Robinson had the opportunity to design his own Nike Air Force 1, a project deeply inspired by VUU and his personal journey.

Robinson's design is a culmination of his lifelong fascination with sneakers and his deep connection to VUU. The shoe features black pony hair, inspired by the school's mascot, the Black Panther, and a nod to VUU's yard. Robinson, who grew up in Virginia, sees this release as a homecoming, a return to the place that shaped him.

"It’s homecoming as in your traditional homecoming for your school, but it’s homecoming like me coming home," Robinson said. "With such an iconic brand like Nike, it’s huge for me."

Robinson's journey to this collaboration was multifaceted. His background in visual merchandising, his fraternity membership (Kappa Alpha Psi), and his connection with Arinze Emeagwali, a co-creator of Nike’s Yardrunners campaign, all played a role. Robinson was very active at VUU; he was a mass communications and media art major, campus leader, orientation leader, in SGA, on the track team, and an RA. He was also his chapter’s president and the sole member at one point. He even urged Nike to include current VUU students in the shoe's campaign for representation.

The design process began over a year ago, with Robinson initially exploring a concept for an overall HBCU shoe, in case VUU didn't approve his design. He leaned into the idea of "getting out the mud," reflecting the resilience and self-discovery that HBCUs foster. He envisioned a worn, torn couch, representing something beautiful that has been through hardship. The insole is green, representing the yard, and imprinted with the names of all HBCUs.

Robinson's Air Force 1 design reflects his innate sense of style, which he describes as a compass. He doesn't believe style can be taught, but rather it's an innate feeling, and he dresses how he feels.

Kahlana Barfield Brown and the Howard University "Yardrunner" Air Force 1

Kahlana Barfield Brown, a fashion and beauty expert and Howard University alumna, has also collaborated with Nike on an Air Force 1 Low "Yardrunner" sneaker. This design is a tribute to African American culture and the legacy of HBCUs, particularly Howard University.

Brown's connection to HBCUs began in her childhood, when her grandmother took her on a three-month road trip to visit various institutions, including Florida A&M University, Hampton University, and Spelman College. Being a part of the first Nike Yardrunner’s campaign, Brown feels that introduction was truly the beginning.

The Howard University x Nike Air Force 1 Low integrates design elements that reflect the spirit and identity of the university. The sneaker features a sail tumbled leather upper with bison brown accents on the Swoosh, tongue, sockliner, and heel tab. Howard University’s geographical coordinates are near the lateral toe, grounding the design in the school’s history.

Brown describes the design as telling a story. The hue brown represents the richness of our skin ones and connects us to the legacy of HBCUs. The coordinates on the toe point to The Yard at Howard but represent the Yard at all HBCUs, the heartbeat of our campuses. The brick sock liner honors the iconic HBCU buildings that stand as symbols of history and resilience. The crimson red is a personal tribute to Delta Sigma Theta, Alpha chapter-where I pledged-and to my grandmother, who became a Delta back in 1942.

Brown designed the sneaker with the same mentality she uses when approaching her wardrobe. Her love for supporting Black designers led her to create a shoe that feels "versatile and timeless" while celebrating the culture that shaped her.

"At Howard, showing up and showing out was the standard, and those trends definitely set the tone for the time," Brown shared. She describes Howard as an institution that allowed her to experiment with her style and find her tribe.

The Howard University x Nike Air Force 1 Low "Yardrunner" launched on December 18, 2024, at DTLR and select Nike retailers for $120 USD.

The Significance of the "Yardrunners" Program

Nike's "Yardrunners" program is more than just a marketing campaign; it's a celebration of Black excellence and the enduring legacy of HBCUs. By collaborating with HBCU alumni like Dex Robinson and Kahlana Barfield Brown, Nike is amplifying the voices and perspectives of those who have been shaped by these institutions.

HBCUs have a rich history of fostering intellectual, social, and cultural development within the Black community. They have produced leaders in various fields, including education, politics, science, and the arts. The "Yardrunners" program recognizes the vital role that HBCUs play in shaping the future of Black America.

The sneakers themselves serve as symbols of pride, resilience, and achievement. They represent the shared experiences of HBCU students and alumni, and they serve as a reminder of the importance of supporting these institutions.
