Heartland Educational Consortium: Enhancing Education in Central Florida

STEM Initiatives and Programs

In partnership with the Panhandle Area Educational Consortium and North East Florida Educational Consortium, the Heartland Educational Consortium has implemented the FloridaLearns STEM Scholars program. This program provides gifted high school students with individualized instruction, career information, and opportunities to explore STEM programs at colleges throughout Florida.

The FloridaLearns STEM Scholars Program coordinator for the Heartland Consortium emphasized the importance of such visits, stating that they "build awareness that there is high-tech stuff not far from home."

Polk State College Visit

As part of the STEM program, students from the Heartland Educational Consortium have the opportunity to visit various colleges and universities to learn about STEM-related programs and careers. One such visit was to the Polk State Clear Springs Advanced Technology Center, where approximately 100 students explored degree programs and career options in STEM fields.

During their visit to the Polk State Clear Springs Advanced Technology Center, students learned about the College’s degrees in Computer Network Engineering Technology, Engineering Technology, and Supply Chain Management. Highlights of the day included an introduction to the College’s $1-million process training unit (PTU), one of only four PTUs of its kind in the country. Students also got to check out the Center’s ammonia cooling and robotics equipment, and state-of-the-art supply chain management simulation lab.

Focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Education

Recognizing the growing importance of AI in education, the Heartland Educational Consortium actively promotes AI literacy and access for all. The consortium hosts the Florida K-12 AI Education Task Force, which brings together educators and experts to explore strategies for integrating AI into the classroom. These meetings provide a platform for sharing knowledge, discussing best practices, and developing classroom-ready strategies.

The Florida K-12 AI Education Task Force is meeting this February, hosted by Heartland Educational Consortium, with a special guest presentation from Dr. The Task Force stands for creating AI literacy and access for all. The consortium also offers opportunities to hear from guest speakers like Alexis Cobo, Ed.D.

Professional Development and Community Building

The Heartland Educational Consortium is committed to supporting the professional growth of educators and fostering a strong sense of community among school staff. The consortium hosts various professional development events, workshops, and communities of practice (CoP) to provide educators with opportunities to learn, collaborate, and connect with their peers.

School Counselor Community of Practice

One notable example is the School Counselor Community of Practice (CoP), which brings together school counselors to celebrate their contributions to students' lives and to engage in learning and collaboration. The theme - “The Life of a School Counselor” - celebrated the heart, hustle, and hope our counselors bring to students every single day! The CoP reminded participants just how powerful their counseling community truly is.
