How Long is a Learner's Permit Valid?

Obtaining a learner's permit is often the first step towards gaining driving privileges. This article explores the validity periods of learner's permits and related aspects, drawing on information pertinent to California and Indiana, providing a comprehensive overview for aspiring drivers.

Learner's Permits in California

In California, the process of obtaining a driver's license involves several steps, beginning with a learner's permit, officially termed a "provisional instruction permit." The California Driver’s License or ID Card Application and fee is valid for 12 months after you apply.

Requirements for Applicants Near 18

For individuals over 17 ½ but under 18 years of age, it is possible to obtain an instruction permit without the Driver Education (DE) and Driver Training (DT) certificates.

Credit for Time Held

If the application expires before the provisional instruction permit has been held for the required six months to take the driving test, it’s necessary to reapply at a DMV office. However, cumulative credit is given for the time the instruction permit was held, which counts towards the six-month requirement.

Out-of-State Driver Education

If driver education or driver training was completed in a state other than California, the DMV will accept a letter from the out-of-state secondary school on the school’s official stationery. The letter must be signed by a school official stating that the completed courses are equivalent to a California secondary school course as described in Section 10020 of Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations and on form “To Secondary Schools Other Than California Schools” (DL 33). The DL 33 form should be sent to the out-of-state school for completion.

Financial Responsibility

Proof of financial responsibility must always be carried in the vehicle. Most Californians maintain financial responsibility through insurance companies, which provide the policy holder with an identification card to be used as proof of coverage.

Knowledge Tests

In-office knowledge tests can be completed during DMV business hours.

Indiana Driver's Licenses and Identification Cards

In Indiana, the validity period for a driver's license or identification card varies based on age and status.

General Validity Periods

An Indiana driver’s license or identification card may be renewed up to two years prior to expiration for most Hoosiers. Individuals with temporary lawful status can only renew up to 30 days prior to the expiration of their current license or identification card. The expiration occurs at midnight on the individual's birthday; however, if the birthday falls on a day all BMV branches are closed in the county, the expiration extends to midnight on the next business day.

Other validity periods for licenses are as follows:

Probationary Driver's Licenses

A probationary driver's license expires at midnight 30 days after the holder's 21st birthday.

Foreign Nationals

Driver's licenses or identification cards issued to foreign nationals with temporary status expire on the end date of their lawful stay in the United States.

Renewing a License While Away From Indiana

If an Indiana driver's license is expired, lost, or stolen while out of state, it may be renewed or replaced online if the requirements are met. Alternatively, a 30-day interim can be requested from the date the driver's license expires. This requires downloading and completing a Request for Interim License, State Form 54580.

A paper interim license may be printed from a myBMV account if the driver’s license was recently renewed or replaced in a BMV branch or online at myBMV.com.

Military Personnel

If temporarily living outside Indiana due to military service, the license remains valid for 90 days following discharge from service. If the license expires while outside of Indiana and online renewal is not possible, a Military Interim Letter can be printed. While operating a motor vehicle, the driver should have their most current driver's license along with the letter and proof of service in the Armed Forces.
