Revolutionizing Student Identification: The Integration of Student IDs into Apple Wallet
The integration of student ID cards into Apple Wallet marks a significant step forward in convenience, security, and technology adoption within educational institutions. This innovative approach transforms the traditional physical ID card into a digital credential accessible on iPhones and Apple Watches, offering numerous benefits for students, faculty, and staff. This article delves into the requirements, functionalities, and implications of adding student IDs to Apple Wallet, drawing upon the experiences of universities like UVA and Baylor.
Embracing Digital Transformation: The Move to Mobile IDs
Universities are increasingly focused on sustainability and reducing waste. UVA encourages students to "Reduce Plastic Waste" by adopting the Mobile ID. Transitioning from physical cards to mobile IDs aligns with these goals, minimizing the need for plastic production and disposal.
The UVA Mobile ID in Apple Wallet, an initiative of the Cavalier Card Office, exemplifies this shift. It allows students to use their iPhones and Apple Watches as their official university IDs. Similarly, Baylor University has implemented a Baylor Digital ID that can be added to Apple Wallet, streamlining campus access and transactions.
Requirements for Adding a Student ID to Apple Wallet
Several requirements must be met to successfully add a student ID to Apple Wallet. These prerequisites ensure security, compatibility, and proper functionality.
Device Compatibility
A compatible Apple device is essential. For instance, Baylor University specifies the following:

- iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, or later running the latest version of iOS
- Apple Watch Series 1 or later running the latest version of watchOS
UVA stipulates that all devices must have a built-in NFC connection. This Near Field Communication technology is crucial for contactless transactions and access.
Software and Account Setup
Ensuring the device is running the correct software version is critical. UVA users need to find the Atrium Campus Connect app in the app store to activate their Mobile ID.
To enhance security when you activate and add your Baylor Digital ID to your Apple Wallet, you first need an eligible device with a passcode (at minimum) enabled. An Apple ID signed into iCloud is required. If two devices are used, both must be signed into the same iCloud account.
Identification and Verification
New users are typically required to log in to an online portal and upload necessary identification documents, such as a government-issued photo ID and a headshot. Baylor University, for example, requires students to upload a photo to idphoto.baylor.edu before adding their ID to Apple Wallet.
Two-Factor Authentication
Enabling two-factor authentication is a common security measure. Employee badges of supported partners can be added to Apple Wallet on iPhone and Apple Watch, allowing employees around the world contactless access to their workplaces. To add a badge, an employee must have multifactor authentication enabled for their account used to sign in to the app provided by their employer.

University-Specific Apps
Most universities provide a dedicated app through which students can add their ID to Apple Wallet. For UVA, this is the Atrium Campus Connect app. Baylor University uses the GET Mobile app published by The CBORD Group. These apps facilitate the secure transfer of credential information to the Apple Wallet.
The Activation Process: A Step-by-Step Guide
The process of adding a student ID to Apple Wallet generally involves the following steps:
- Download the University App: Download the Transact eAccounts Mobile app from the App Store to your phone.
- Log In: Log in to the app using your university credentials. Due to a current issue with NetBadge, please click the login button only once.
- Add to Apple Wallet: Once you have successfully authenticated in eAccounts, click the Add to Apple Wallet button to add your Mobile ID to Apple Wallet. Click iPhone and continue through the prompts (Next, Agree to Terms & Conditions).
- Verification: When the process is complete, the app will send a notification to verify your Mobile ID has been added to Wallet.
- Set a PIN: Set a PIN for your Baylor Digital ID (you cannot skip this step).
- Authorize Devices: If you have more than one Apple device, your iPhone may be listed along with Apple Watch and other devices. If you want to authorize these devices, go back through the “Add to Apple Wallet” process again once your iPhone is authorized.
Functionality and Usage of Mobile IDs
Once the student ID is successfully added to Apple Wallet, it can be used in various ways:
Accessing Buildings and Services
The primary function of a mobile ID is to grant access to campus buildings, libraries, and other facilities. Simply hold the top of your device to the reader. When you add your DukeCard to your Apple device, you can tap wherever your physical DukeCard is accepted. The NFC (near field communication) antenna must directly face the reader to activate the UVA Mobile ID on your devices successfully. The NFC antenna location varies by device manufacturer and model.
Making Purchases
Student IDs in Apple Wallet can also be used to make purchases at campus stores, dining halls, and vending machines. This eliminates the need to carry cash or a physical card.

Express Mode
Express Mode is a convenient feature that allows users to access their ID without unlocking their device or authenticating with Face ID or Touch ID. Express Mode is turned on automatically when you add your student ID to Apple Wallet, so you can use your student ID with just a tap. You don't need to wake or unlock your device, and you don't need to authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. If you are using Express Mode, you do not have to do anything. If you are not using Express Mode, you will have to authenticate each time you access your phone. This is a user security preference.
Power Reserve
iPhones XS and later: Express Mode with power reserve is available for up to five hours after the device’s battery needs to be charged. You can press the side button to check if Express Mode is available when your iPhone needs to be charged. Doing this often may significantly reduce the power reserve for Express Mode.
Offline Access
The UVA Mobile ID can be used even if your phone does not have network connectivity, as the UVA Mobile ID is stored on your device. Your iPhone or Apple Watch must be turned on, but it doesn’t have to be connected to a network.
Managing and Securing Your Mobile ID
Lost or Stolen Devices
If you lose your iPhone or Apple Watch, it is crucial to take immediate action to prevent unauthorized use of your mobile ID. You should use Find My iPhone to suspend or deactivate your UVA Mobile ID in Apple Wallet. Mark your device as lost. This action automatically turns off access to all cards and passes in Apple Wallet, including your student ID.
Deactivating and Reactivating
Current cardholders may continue the usage of their physical UVA ID card. To switch from a UVA Mobile ID to a physical UVA ID card, visit the Cavalier Card Office during business hours. There is no cost for switching from a physical UVA ID card to the UVA Mobile ID. If you wish to switch back to a physical card, visit the Cavalier Card Office.
Eligible cardholders who have not exceeded their device limit can add their Mobile ID back at any time. To add credentials back onto your device, you must meet eligibility requirements and not have exceeded the device limit for your Mobile ID.
Removing from Devices
You will need to remove your Mobile ID from your old device before adding it to your new device. From iPhone: Navigate to the Wallet app. Tap (…) in the lower right corner of your card. Scroll to the bottom and select Remove Card. From Apple Watch: Navigate to the Watch app on your iPhone. Scroll down and select Wallet & Apply Pay. Tap on Transact Mobile Credential. Scroll to the bottom and select Remove Card.
Security Measures
Once you switch to the UVA Mobile ID, your plastic UVA ID will be immediately deactivated and can no longer used at any card readers on and off grounds for security purposes.
Benefits of Using Mobile IDs
The adoption of mobile IDs offers numerous advantages for students and universities alike:
