How to Order a Transcript from the University of North Carolina

Obtaining your academic transcript from the University of North Carolina (UNC) is a straightforward process, whether you need it for applying to other institutions, jobs, scholarships, or simply for your own records. Understanding the different types of transcripts available and the ordering process is key.

Official vs. Unofficial Transcripts: Choosing the Right One

UNC offers two types of transcripts: official and unofficial. The right choice depends on your specific needs.

  • Official Transcripts: These are used for formal purposes, such as applying to other institutions, jobs, or scholarships. To maintain their integrity, official transcripts are sent directly to the requesting party. All official transcript orders are processed through Parchment.

  • Unofficial Transcripts: While they contain the same academic information as official transcripts, they lack the official seal, signature, or certification. They are mainly used for personal reference or informal purposes. Unofficial transcripts are printable and can also be saved as a PDF.

Ordering Official Transcripts

All official transcript orders are processed through Parchment. Here's how to order:

  2. In order to access the Student Center, you will have to create a Guest ID by following the form’s instructions.
  3. If you encounter issues creating your GuestID (e.g. Missing the Student Center link?), wait ~24 hours to log in again with your Guest ID.
  4. In your Student Center, Select the Academics drop-down menu.
  5. Click the View PDF button in the top-right.

Important Considerations and Potential Issues

  • Transcript Validation: If you have enrollment prior to Fall 2010 and have not obtained a transcript from us since then, your record will likely need to be validated before your transcript can be released. This means you will not be able to view your unofficial transcript in ConnectCarolina or have an official transcript order processed until validation is cleared within 3 business days.
  • Error Messages: If you attempt to access your internal transcript, you will receive an error message saying “Report not created. Negative service indicator exists.” If you place an official transcript order you will be notified of a hold on your record requiring validation. When you receive these messages, it means the system has logged your attempt to obtain your transcript and your records have been put into our validation queue.
  • Holds: Transcripts may be held due to a financial obligation to the university. Check for and resolve any holds on the UNCG student account.

Additional Information for UNCG Students

The University Registrar’s Office provides transcripts of a student’s official UNCG academic record upon request.

  • Ordering: Current and former students can order transcripts online through the National Student Clearinghouse to be sent to the receiving institution electronically. Third parties must follow a different process.
  • Receiving Institution: Confirm the transcript format needed by the receiving institution. Students have thirty (30) days to follow up with the receiving institution to confirm that their transcripts have been received.
  • Unofficial Transcripts: Current students may view and print copies of their unofficial transcript through UNCGenie. Former students are unable to access unofficial transcripts at this time.
  • Virtual appointments available.

NC State Transcript Information

NC State only issues official transcripts at the authorization or written request of the student concerned.

  • Cost: The charge for an official transcript is $12.00.
  • Processing Time: Transcript requests are normally processed within 24-48 hours.
  • Delivery: Many recipients now accept “paperless” official transcripts.
  • Notarization: Note: Paper transcripts that need to be notarized must be ordered for pick-up.
  • Transcript Appearance: Paper transcripts printed after August 11, 2016 have a new look that aligns the transcript with the appearance of our e-transcript. The new design allows for easier scanning by recipients but still maintains several safety features to ensure the integrity of the document. The transcript is printed on “wolf” gray paper with visible red and blue colored fibers in the actual paper stock.
