Mastering Magic: A Guide to Learning New Spells in Oblivion

The world of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is rich with magical possibilities. Whether you're a novice mage or a seasoned sorcerer, learning new spells is crucial to expanding your capabilities and conquering the challenges that await. This guide explores the various ways to acquire spells in Oblivion, from purchasing them from vendors to crafting your own unique incantations.

Acquiring Spells from Mage Guilds

One of the primary methods for learning new spells is by visiting Mage Guilds and purchasing them from spell merchants. Mage Guilds are located in most cities, each specializing in different schools of magic. For example, the Leyawiin Mages Guild primarily offers Mysticism spells.

When visiting a Mage Guild, it's important to remember that the available spells will vary depending on the guild's specialization. While most guilds offer a variety of spells, some may focus on specific schools of magic.

Starting Spells and Skill Selection

At the beginning of the game, your character will start with a few basic spells, such as a fire blast, "Show the Way," and a healing spell. As you progress and select your major skills, you may receive additional spells.

The spells you receive at the start of the game depend on the major skills you choose. For example, selecting Conjuration as a major skill will grant you the "Summon Skeleton" spell. These starting spells provide a foundation for your character's magical abilities.

Understanding Spell Effects

Some spells, such as "Detect Life," have effects that may not be immediately apparent. The initial version of "Detect Life" shows life signals very minimally. It's possible that higher forms of this spell will display life signals more clearly.

The "Starlight" spell is another example of a spell with potentially unclear effects. Some players have reported that it doesn't illuminate surroundings effectively, especially in first-person mode. Switching to third-person view may resolve this issue. It's also possible that lower graphics settings on systems like the Steam Deck can impact some visual effects of spells.

Spell Tomes

Almost every spell in Oblivion has a corresponding tome that is only introduced with the Spell Tomes official download.

Spell Merchants

Learn Spells by visiting a Mage Guild and purchasing spells from a spell merchant in The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Remastered. Do note that the Mages Guilds you'll visit will have different schools of magic, depending on the cities they are situated in. Although the spells they offer will encompass many kinds of magic, some Mages Guilds like Leyawin will offer mostly Mysticism spells.

Spellcasting Mechanics

To cast a spell, press the designated button on your console. The spell you're about to cast is displayed in the lower right portion of your screen as a spell icon. You can also assign spells to your Shortcut Menu for quick access.

Spellcrafting: Creating Custom Spells

For those seeking greater magical power and customization, Oblivion offers a spellcrafting system. Spellcrafting allows you to combine spell effects with various duration, range, and magnitude stats. To unlock spellcrafting, you need access to an Altar of Spellmaking. These altars are found in two locations:

  • The Arcane University: Requires joining the Mages Guild and completing enough quests to become an Apprentice.
  • Frostcrag Spire: Requires purchasing Magetallow Candles from the Mystic Emporium in the Imperial City Market District. Frostcrag Spire is located north of the Imperial City.

Accessing the Altar of Spellmaking

To use the altars in the Arcane University, you must join the Mages Guild to access the building. It takes more time, but at least it won't empty your wallet. Don't worry, you don't need to complete every Guild Quest, just enough to become an Apprentice. Visit any Mages Guild Hall (there's one in every city except Kvatch and the Imperial City) and speak with the Head of the Guild. Get a recommendation from every Head of a Mages Guild Hall, which is seven in total. Head inside the Praxographical Center of the Arcane University to find the Altar of Spellmaking. Speak with the Head of a Mages Guild (right) to access the Arcane University (left). If you're playing on PC and looking for a shortcut, you can also use a spellcrafting cheat. Open the commands menu with the tilde key (~) (this key is usually placed between Tab and 1) and type "showspellmaking", then press Enter.

Crafting Your Spell

Once you interact with an Altar of Spellmaking, you'll see a list of 'Known Effects' on the left. These are the spells you've obtained and are able to cast. That last part is important, as you can't craft spells above your current level (novice to master). Click the spell effects on the left to add them to your custom spell. Two examples of early-game 'novice' spell effects you might use for spellcrafting are 'Flare', which deals fire damage to a target, and 'Heal Minor Wounds', which restores your HP. The two most common ways to obtain new spells are questing and purchasing them from vendors.

When crafting a spell, you can adjust the following parameters:

  • Range: This determines who the spell affects.
  • Magnitude: The strength of the spell.
  • Duration: How long does the spell effect last?

Adjust the sliders for every spell effect you add. Before you enthusiastically drag every slider to the right, beware that this will increase the gold cost, magicka cost, and level requirement for this spell. You can add as many spell effects as you like, but the more complex the spell, the more unpredictable its effects.

Spell Costs and Level Requirements

The cost for most spells matches the value you would calculate from the Spell Cost equation. In other words, if you were to create the same spell at the Spellmaking Altar it would have the same magicka cost as the built-in spell. However, there are a few notable exceptions, as noted in the tables. Spells that are a bad deal, i.e. more expensive than a custom spell, are in red; spells that are a good deal are in green.

Cost for spells is dependent upon your skill in the school (as modified by Luck, see Magic Overview). The provided baseline values are the magicka cost when your skill level is 33. Level indicates what skill level you must reach (or surpass) in order to use a spell. The base cost in gold that you must pay to purchase a spell is always three times the current magicka cost of the spell, taking into account your character's skill level and Luck. The actual cost you pay is further increased based on how well you haggle with the merchant.

Console Commands for Spell Management

For PC players, console commands offer additional control over spell management:

  • player.addspell [Form ID]: Adds a specific spell to your spell list. For example, player.addspell 000A9822 adds Heal Major Wounds.
  • PlayerSpellBook or psb: Adds every spell defined in the game, including those from mods and test spells. Use with caution as it can impact performance.
  • player.removespell [Form ID]: Removes a specific spell from your spell list. For example, player.removespell 000A97CA removes Calming Touch.

Removing custom spells is complicated by the fact that they do not have a known Form ID.

Modifying and Removing Spells

Several modifications can be used to rename and remove spells:

  • Wrye Bash: Allows you to both rename and delete spells.
  • OBSE-based mod: Allows you to remove spells while in-game.

If you don't want to or are unable to use either of these, then your only choice is the console.

Notable Spells and Anomalies

  • Flame Shield: Although listed as a Journeyman-level spell, its magnitude and duration make it a Master-level spell. It also costs significantly more magicka than a comparable custom spell.
  • Finger of the Mountain: The two highest levels are the most expensive spells to cast in the game.
  • Wizard's Fury: Significantly cheaper than an equivalent custom spell.
  • The two lowest-leveled versions of the spell appear with a Shock icon in the player's inventory and appear as a lightning bolt; all the others show a Fire icon and act as a fire ball.
  • This spell appears on the spell lists for some NPCs.
