Understanding International Baccalaureate Tuition Fees and Exam Costs

What is the International Baccalaureate (IB)?
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) is a nonprofit educational foundation. The International Baccalaureate (IB) offers a fourth program, the IB Career-related Programme (CP), an innovative education framework for students who want to combine IB with a focus on a career pathway. The International Baccalaureate® (IB) offers a continuum of international education. The programs encourage both personal and academic achievement, challenging students to advance in their studies and in their personal development. To this end, the organization works with schools, governments, and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment.
IB Programs for High School Students
IB-authorized high schools offer rigorous, college-level coursework through the IB Diploma Programme (DP) and IB Career-related Programme (CP) for students in grades 11 and 12. Students can take individual IB courses or pursue the full IB Diploma, which involves two years of study across multiple subject areas. The CP combines academic study with career-focused learning and is available at select schools.
Pike High School (PHS), an International Baccalaureate World School since 2006, offers the prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme to our students. This program is currently available at only twenty other Indiana high schools. It is recognized throughout the world as a premier, pre-university program with a comprehensive and rigorous curriculum in which a college-bound student can participate. The IB Diploma Programme courses are offered in 11th and 12th grade only, but students will prepare for the program by participating in our PHS Pre-IB (Honors/AP) classes that are offered in the 9th and 10th grade. Diploma Programme (DP) Curriculum
Seattle Public Schools offers two IB programs for high school students during their last two years of high school. The Diploma Programme (DP) curriculum is made up of six traditional subject areas as well as the IB core curriculum. The IB core curriculum includes theory of knowledge, creativity, activity, service and the extended essay, which must be completed by the end of the student’s senior year. Students in the IB Diploma Programme can take an IB exam in any of the six subject areas.

Career-related Programme (CP) Structure
The Career-related Programme (CP) is a framework of international education that incorporates the values of the IB into a program that addresses the needs of students interested in career-related education. Students complete a minimum of 2 IB Diploma Programme courses, a core of an additional four components, (personal and professional skills, service learning, language development, reflective project) and a career-related study. Enrollment in the IB program is free for students.
Exam Fees
Students may earn college credit by taking IB exams and achieving qualifying scores, though credit policies vary by institution. Students may only take an IB exam if they complete the corresponding IB course.
Seattle Public School (SPS) students who wish to take IB exams at their high school must register to take the exam in the fall each year. The SPS registration fee to take an IB Exam for 2020 ranges from no cost to the student up to $175 per exam depending on the high school that the student attends.
Financial Assistance
Wisconsin public school districts are responsible by law to pay Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) exam fees for students that qualify for free or reduced-price meals. This requirement is found in Wis. Stat. sec. 120.12(22). Districts that receive Title IVA federal funds can use a portion of those funds to cover the cost of Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) exams for students who are eligible for free or reduced price meals. All 3 high schools offer IB exam fee waivers and reduced fees for students eligible for Free and Reduced Lunch (FRL) services. School staff may assist students and families to complete the FRL form as needed. Students and families MUST mark the checkbox on the back of the form to indicate that the family would like to access the added benefits that come with the FRL status, such as IB fee waivers. IB Coordinators are notified if a student is eligible for an IB fee waiver.
To remove the financial barrier to taking the Advanced Placement (AP), IB, and College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams, Section 94 of The State School Aid Act of 1979 (MCL 388.1694) makes $2.6 million dollars available to low-income students and their families. The law encourages students to take IB and AP courses and participate in the exams associated with these courses. These exams can translate into college credit, subsequently reducing college tuition costs. Exam rates for 2025-26 will remain at $5.00 for qualified students.
IB exams are free for qualified Minnesota students who demonstrate financial need. Some high schools subsidize IB exam costs for students who do not demonstrate financial need. Contact the high school for more information.
Understanding College Credit for IB Exams
Students may earn college credit by taking IB exams and achieving qualifying scores, though credit policies vary by institution.
This means that students who earn a passing score on any IB Exam and plan to attend a Washington state public college or university can learn ahead of time which type of college credit their college or university will award with the passage of the student’s IB Exam.

Students must complete an IB exam for each course, which is scored on a 1-7 scale. Many colleges and universities in Minnesota and beyond award credit for scores of 4 or higher on IB exams. Credit recognition varies by institution. Some colleges and universities may not award credit for all IB subjects, and required scores may differ. International universities may also award credit for IB exams. Check with the admissions office of each institution to understand its IB credit policy.
Benefits of IB Exams Even Without High Scores
IB exams, taken as part of IB coursework, reflect engagement in a globally recognized, academically challenging program. The exams build analytical and writing skills and demonstrate persistence and academic commitment. There is no penalty for a low score, and students are encouraged to complete the exam as part of the IB learning experience.
IB Diploma
The IB Diploma is awarded to students who complete six IB courses (one from each subject group), take the corresponding exams, and complete three additional core requirements:
- Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course
- Extended Essay (EE) of up to 4,000 words
- Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) experiencesTo receive the diploma, students must earn a minimum of 24 points across their exams and fulfill all program components. The diploma is recognized by colleges and universities worldwide and may strengthen applications or lead to advanced standing or credit.
Taking IB Courses Without Pursuing the Full Diploma
Yes. Students may take one or more individual IB courses without completing the full IB Diploma. These students may still take the IB exam for that course and potentially earn college credit based on their exam score.
