NIH Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program (BESIP)

Housed within the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the NBIB has a mission to improve health by leading the development and accelerating the application of biomedical technologies. Their Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program (BESIP) is hosted by the BETA Center, an NIH-wide organization housed in the NIBIB intramural research program. The BESIP program contains two tracks: BESIP-BME and BESIP-STEM. For the BESIP-BME track, applicants must be working towards a bachelor’s degree in physical science, computer science, or engineering. The BESIP-STEM track includes applicants who are not majoring in engineering, physical science, or computer science but are interested in pursuing biomedical engineering in graduate school or as a career. This could include applicants from other science majors such as biology, biochemistry, mathematics, chemistry, and other related biomedical disciplines. Alternatively, BESIP-STEM applicants may be majoring in engineering, physical science, and computer science, but have not had a previous in-person biomedical engineering research experience.

Siemens Healthineers Engineering Summer Internship

In their Engineering Summer Internship program, Siemens Healthineers offers a dynamic, project-based experience for undergraduate and master’s engineering students, including those studying industrial engineering. Qualified candidates (preferably rising juniors or seniors) participate in engineering and design activities utilizing tools like Solidworks, AutoCAD, Matlab, and Siemens NX. Interns benefit from paid time off and an hourly wage of $24 to $40, depending on education, experience, and location.

Gaining Credit for Internships

Participate in the College of Engineering and Computer Science Internships for Credit program to build your skills and earn academic credit at the same time. Complete the prerequisites for your major. Participating in a major-related internship during the semester enrolled in the internship course. Students who currently do not meet the requirements for the CECS Internship Course may report their internship experience or enroll in Experiential Learning’s Internship Course. Internship Course is graded on a Satisfactory (“S”)/ Unsatisfactory (“U”) basis.

CEN 4940: Practical Work in Computer Engineering

CEN 4940: Practical Work in Computer Engineering is a 1-3 credit course that may be applied toward the technical electives requirement for CpE undergraduate degree programs. Students may register for CEN 4940 a maximum of three times for a total of three credits. It may only be taken S/U (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory). To register for CEN 4940, a formal letter from the sponsoring company describing the nature of the work must be on file with the Computer Engineering Advising office before the end of the registration drop/add period. The letter must indicate that the student will be working approximately 160-480 hours across four weeks or more and that the with is computer science/engineering related, provide a description of the student’s responsibilities, and provide detailed contact information of the person or persons who will be supervising the student during the work. To successfully complete Practical Work with a grade of Satisfactory, a 2-4 page Post-Internship Report written by the student, and a formal Evaluation Letter written by the student’s supervisor(s) is due to the Computer Engineering Advising office one week prior to the end of finals week.
