Navigating Laundry Services at Ithaca College: A Comprehensive Guide
As an on-campus resident at Ithaca College, understanding the available resources is crucial for a smooth residential experience. Among these, laundry services play a significant role. Each residence hall and apartment area at Ithaca College provides a laundry room exclusively for on-campus residents, available at no additional charge. However, residents need to supply their own laundry detergent, bleach, fabric softener, and dryer sheets, which can be purchased at Mac's Convenience store (140 Phillips Hall) or off-campus.
Laundry Machine Issues and Challenges
Students have reported issues with laundry services, including broken machines and long wait times. Senior Violet Van Buren, a resident assistant in Terrace 12, noted consistent problems with non-functional machines in her building. One student, Capodilupo, mentioned having to do laundry in smaller loads, using more detergent and Tide Pods, further complicated by the limited number of working washers available.
These challenges stem from several factors. Jenny Pickett, assistant director of Residential Life and Student Conduct and Community Standards, stated that laundry machines frequently break down as they are nearing the end of their lifespan. In addition, the college's contract with CSC Service Works ended in May 2023, and renewal was not possible due to budgetary constraints.
Pickett acknowledged that some residence halls, particularly in the Terraces, face disproportionately high student-to-machine ratios, exacerbating the issue. Unlike the Towers, which have a larger number of machines, the Terraces often have only two washers and two dryers for approximately 50 residents, resulting in high demand and potential wait times.

Addressing Laundry Concerns
The college has taken steps to address these concerns. During spring break, Residential Life introduced 50 new washing machines to campus, with the Terraces receiving priority due to the smallest machine-to-student ratio. However, these new machines were top-loading, which led to initial problems as many students were unfamiliar with their operation. Overloading the machines resulted in burned-out belts and even a fire incident in Terrace 3.
To mitigate these issues, Residential Life is focusing on educating students about proper laundry practices. This includes using mesh bags for small items like socks, checking pockets for foreign objects, and avoiding overloading the machines. These measures aim to reduce user error and prolong the lifespan of the existing machines.
The Transition Away from CSC Service Works
The decision not to renew the contract with CSC Service Works was driven by slow service response times and increasing costs. Previously, a single technician serviced laundry machines at Ithaca College, Cornell University, and SUNY Cortland. This arrangement often led to delays in repairs and maintenance, causing frustration among residents.
While Facilities staff address other maintenance issues promptly, laundry repairs have been a persistent challenge due to the external service provider. The college is actively seeking a new laundry service provider to improve response times and overall service quality.
