Unlocking Student Potential: A Deep Dive into IXL's Student Dashboard Features
IXL is a powerful online learning platform that offers personalized experiences for students in grades Pre-K to 12. IXL provides engaging content across multiple subjects, including math, language arts, science, and social studies, with interactive features to keep students motivated. From personalized learning paths to comprehensive analytics, IXL equips students and educators with the tools they need to succeed. This article explores the key features of the IXL student dashboard, demonstrating how it can be leveraged to enhance learning outcomes.
The Student Dashboard: A Personalized Learning Hub
From the moment students sign into IXL, they automatically land on their student dashboard, where they can see exactly what to work on next, and can celebrate all of the progress they’ve made so far. The dashboard is the homepage for learners on IXL. From there, students can jump directly into working on skills, enter the Diagnostic arena, see their awards, and more!
The student dashboard is designed to be a one-stop-shop for students to keep track of what they should be working on and how they’re progressing so far. This learning homepage provides learners with specific skills to work on based on their assignments and previous practice.
"What Should I Work On?" Section
From their personal dashboard, it’s easy for learners to see exactly what they should be working on next. Skills suggested by their teachers or parents are front and center, so they can quickly dive into their current assignments. Any skills that students have already mastered or reached proficiency in will be automatically hidden to help keep them on task. Students can also see all of the skills they’ve recently worked on, and jump back in to continue learning. Learners can also enter the Diagnostic arena or launch into their personalized study plans straight from their dashboard.
Visualizing Progress: "How Am I Doing?" Section
The “How am I doing?” section of the dashboard breaks down learners’ time on IXL into a couple of easy-to-understand stats and fun awards. These are a great jumping-off point for goal setting around regular practice. The dashboard helps students visualize all that they’ve accomplished! They’ll see how many questions they’ve answered and skills they’ve learned each week, motivating them to excel even more. The dashboard helps students to get excited about learning and encourages them to celebrate their achievements. Finally, when students are part of an IXL Leaderboard contest, they can track their progress on their dashboard!

Setting Goals for Success
By working on just a few questions a week, learners use IXL to make progress towards a lot of big learning goals, like improving their test scores or meeting grade-level expectations. But sometimes these big goals can be intimidating, making it hard for students to get started. Luckily, IXL’s student dashboard makes it easy to set goals that your students can track on their own!
Goal Setting Strategies
Here are some goal-setting strategies to help students make the most of IXL:
- Practice Makes Permanent: IXL is research proven to help students learn new content in a way that sticks. And that doesn’t always mean practicing a skill to a score of 100.
- Little and Often: A little goes a long way! Working on IXL a little bit every day can help students lock in learning without overwhelming them. Ask students to practice 5 to 10 questions a day to ensure they’re making steady progress.
- Time-Based Goals: Similar to a question goal, a time goal can help learners build up the habit of practicing a little bit each day. Tell your students to set aside 10-15 minutes each day to work on IXL.
- Compete Against Yourself: Friendly competition is a great way to motivate learning. So why not have learners compete against themselves? Have your learners try to meet or exceed their weekly averages.
- Leverage Awards: Students already love earning awards, which makes them an easy way to set goals. If they meet their goal, the student dashboard will let them know that they have new awards to uncover!
Focusing on the Right Skills
Once you’ve set goals with your students about what kind of usage they’re aiming for, it’s important to clarify which skills you’d like them to work on. For each larger goal a student is working towards, they’ll need to focus their attention on what will make the most impact.
Keeping the Diagnostic Up-to-Date
To give students even more benefits from IXL, have them keep their diagnostic strands up to date. With only 10-15 questions a week in the Diagnostic arena, learners can keep their scores pinpointed and get better skill recommendations as a result. These diagnostic recommendations make it easier for you and your students to find the right skills to close learning gaps or provide students with appropriate next steps for their learning level. Assigning the diagnostic is an easy way to keep this top of mind for students. From your IXL account, go to the Assessment tab and click the “Keep your Real-Time Diagnostic up to date!” button to automatically put a reminder on the student dashboard.
IXL's Real-Time Diagnostic has long been established through validity research to be a precise indicator of student achievement and a strong predictor of performance on standardized assessments. Get up-to-the-minute insights from IXL's Real-Time Diagnostic, which pinpoints students' overall working grade levels and their levels on key strands.

Scheduling and Assignments
Another simple way to help learners stay on top of their learning goals is to set up a simple schedule for their IXL work.
Teachers, lesson planning on IXL just got even easier! When you find a skill you’d like to schedule ahead, click the star button. This will automatically suggest the skill to all of your students. Next, choose the date and time you want the skill to appear on your selected students’ dashboards. If you’d like, you can also set an end date. On your teacher dashboard, you’ll see any skills you’ve scheduled ahead of time listed separately from your actively suggested skills. If you’ve set an end date for your suggested skills, they will be removed from your students’ dashboards on the end date. You can also easily manage and remove your currently suggested skills on your teacher dashboard. Ready to make planning your class assignments easier than ever?

District Analytics
We’re excited to introduce District Analytics! Now, you can see in real time how well teachers and learners are engaging with IXL, as well as whether students are meeting grade-level expectations. District Analytics features flexible reports that enable you to zoom in and out between high-level district insights and in-depth classroom data. Each report uses clear-cut visuals to give an immediate understanding of how your district is doing. If you see something you want to investigate, you can drill down into school- and grade-level insights.
This dashboard features summaries of your district’s IXL use and achievements, all in one place. Research shows that answering at least 15 questions per subject per week on IXL has a positive impact on students’ state test performance. The Skill Usage report helps you track whether your students are meeting that goal of regular usage. Studies show that achieving proficiency (a SmartScore of 80) and mastery (a SmartScore of 100) on IXL skills leads to learning gains. This report helps you understand whether schools are using IXL for this type of purposeful practice. The more engaged teachers are with IXL, the more confident you can be that student outcomes will grow and accelerate throughout the school year.
The Diagnostic Levels report helps you identify students that are at, above, below, or far below grade level in math and ELA based on Real-Time or Snapshot data. It also shows which students are within a Snapshot window or have yet to pinpoint their diagnostic level. It’s an easy way to see whether students are making expected progress at this point in the year. With District Analytics, you have a powerful tool to successfully implement IXL in your district.
Student demographic data is now available in District Analytics, in the US edition! Now, district administrators are able to filter, group, and sort reports by any demographic field rostered to their account. Student demographic data can be collected through all rostering methods for US site accounts using either standard demographic data fields or custom demographic fields based on individual district needs. District administrators on US, CA, and UK site accounts are now able to group their diagnostic reports by grade, school, or (for US only) any rostered demographic category. Administrators will also have the ability to choose multiple “group by” categories which will stack, allowing them to view specific student subgroups. Administrators can also export the data as shown in the image, both through PDF and CSV exports.
Teacher Dashboard
We’ve redesigned our teacher dashboard on all English editions! Teachers can now easily access classroom engagement tools, monitor students’ learning, and manage their assignments, all from their IXL homepage. Teachers can also view their students’ dashboards!
Administrators can click on each item on the teacher’s dashboard to dive deeper. The teacher dashboard in admin analytics, and more!
