Jahurul Islam Medical College: A Comprehensive Overview

Jahurul Islam Medical College, Hospital, and Nurse Training Institute, established under the Aftab-Rahima Welfare Trust, form a conglomerate dedicated to medical education, research, hospital care, and nursing services training. Located in Bhagalpur village, Bajitpur thana, Kishoregonj district, the institution was founded by the philanthropist Late Mr. Jahurul Islam in his native region. Location and Accessibility

Bhagalpur-Bajitpur is situated approximately 110 km northeast of Dhaka city, offering convenient connectivity via the Egaro Shindur Express train and an excellent road network. Travel time to Bhagalpur from the capital is approximately three hours.

Establishment and Evolution

In 1989, the first phase saw the inauguration of a 250-bed hospital, equipped with modern instruments and facilities. This hospital provides round-the-clock services, including emergency care, for both indoor and outdoor patients. Currently, the hospital has expanded to 390 beds, covering all departments of a general tertiary-level teaching hospital. Upon completion of its final phase, the hospital aims to accommodate 500 beds, catering to all aspects of medical, surgical, and emergency requirements.

Jahurul Islam Medical College was established on August 26, 1992, as a fully residential institution. The college campus is self-contained, featuring buildings that house departments, laboratories, a library, museums, a dissection hall, lecture theaters, a cafeteria, and separate hostels for male and female students, as well as accommodation for teachers. The serene campus and landscaped terrain offer a pollution-free environment conducive to modern teaching and learning methods.

Academic Programs

MBBS Program Details

Jahurul Islam Medical College offers a five-year MBBS course recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Medical Commission (NMC). After completing the five-year course, students must complete a one-year internship to be eligible to practice medicine. The college is affiliated with Dhaka University as a constituent college.

Admission Process

Admission to the MBBS program for Bangladeshi students is conducted centrally by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). A written multiple-choice question exam is administered simultaneously throughout the country. Admission is based on the test score and grades at the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) levels. Foreign students are eligible for 25% of the seats, following guidelines from the University of Dhaka, BM&DC, and the Directorate General of Health Services.

Eligibility Criteria for Local Students

Candidates should have a minimum GPA of 9.00 combined in SSC and HSC examinations, with a minimum of 3.5 in each, and a GPA of 3.50 in Biology. Students with a study break of more than one year are not eligible to apply.

Admission Procedure for Local Students

Announcements for admission are typically published in daily newspapers in October. Eligible candidates must collect and submit application forms with necessary documents and collect admit cards for the admission test. The admission test is arranged by DGHS under the Ministry of Health. Candidates are selected based on merit. A medical checkup is conducted for each selected candidate before admission.

College Campus

The college is situated on approximately 52.62 acres of land in Bhagalpur, Kishoreganj District. The campus includes an academic structure, separate hostels for men and women, staff quarters, and the Jahurul Islam Medical College Hospital, a 390-bed teaching hospital. The college is the first medical institution in Bangladesh to be established in a rural area.

Hospital Facilities

The hospital is equipped with modern equipment and facilities. In its final phase, the hospital will have 750 beds to provide comprehensive medical and surgical services. The hospital has implemented a computer networking system, connecting each department through LAN and WAN to share information and store data on a central database server.

Hostel Facilities

The medical college is entirely residential, with separate dormitories for male and female students. Hostels include a dining room, common room with sports facilities, TV, and gymnasium.

Hostel Rules

The hostel gate closes at 9:00 PM and opens at 6:00 AM. Students must return to their rooms by 9:00 PM. Students are not allowed to exit the campus or stay outside without written permission from the Principal on weekdays. During holidays, students must sign the register book before departing and provide an application signed by their legal guardians upon return.

Library

Jahurul Islam Medical College has a library with a collection of over 6000 books, journals, and research papers. It provides access to online medical databases, e-journals, and e-books. The library offers study spaces, computer facilities, and librarian assistance. Photocopying and printing facilities are also available.

Dining Hall Rules

The Dining Hall is a place to eat, socialize, and unwind with friends. Food is not allowed to be taken from the dining hall to the rooms. Preparation of food in student rooms is prohibited. Selected students act as mess managers each month.

Curriculum

The MBBS curriculum includes subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Forensic Medicine, Pathology, and Microbiology.

Clinical Teaching and Training

Clinical teaching and training are integral to the medical education program. Clinical rotations occur in various medical specialties, including internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, and psychiatry. A total of 11127 medical students from 16 batches have passed the final MBBS examination. Many graduates have earned postgraduate degrees and are working both at home and abroad.

The Student’s Welfare Committee oversees extracurricular and academic endeavors, including religious events, annual picnics, literary competitions, the printing of an annual magazine, and annual sports and cultural week.

Student Life and Culture

General Conduct

Students must adhere to the rules of Jahurul Islam Medical College. Disciplinary actions are taken against students who violate these rules. Students must attend classes punctually. Students with insufficient attendance or poor academic performance are not eligible for university examinations.

Dress Code

Students must wear proper attire for classes and ward duties. The recommended dress code is loose shirts, trousers, shoes, and long white coats for males, and shalwar kameez, dupatta, and long white coats for females.

Vacation and Leave

The college and hospital operate from Wednesday to Monday, with Tuesday as a holiday. Students are not allowed to leave the campus without prior permission from the Principal during working days. Students who leave the campus without permission are subject to disciplinary action.

Miscellaneous Rules

Students are required to maintain order and quietness on campus and refrain from engaging in politics or activities subversive to the institution or state. Smoking is prohibited within the college premises. Addiction to drugs or narcotics is forbidden. Students are not allowed to display posters or notices without written permission.
