James Madison University Baseball: A Legacy of Diamond Dukes

The James Madison University (JMU) Dukes baseball team has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1970. Known as the "Diamond Dukes," the team represents James Madison University in NCAA baseball. They have compiled an impressive all-time record of 1092-670-8. The Dukes have made eight appearances in the NCAA Tournament, with their most recent appearance in 2024.

Early Years and Rise to Prominence

The JMU baseball program officially started in 1974. One of the key figures in the program's early rise to prominence was Billy Sample. Sample was the first former Duke to reach the Major League level. He was recognized as the leading player among an outstanding group of performers who elevated JMU baseball to national recognition in the mid-1970s. Sample achieved a JMU-record career batting average of .388 and earned first-team Division II All-American honors as a second baseman in 1976, boasting an impressive .421 batting average that year.

The Landmark 1983 Season

The 1983 season stands out as a landmark year in JMU baseball history. The squad earned a bid to the 36-team NCAA Tournament. The 1983 Dukes opened the season with a doubleheader exhibition against the defending world champion St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals' manager, Whitey Herzog, and JMU athletics director, Dean Ehlers, were long-time friends. The team finished the season with an impressive 37-13 record.

In the NCAA Tournament, JMU faced tough competition, including an eventual national championship Texas team that featured future Hall of Famer Roger Clemens. Texas pitched future major-leaguer Calvin Schiraldi against JMU. JMU fell to Texas 12-0 in Omaha. The Dukes faced two of the nation's top three ranked teams in the College World Series. William & Mary was in the regional field as the ECAC South winner; The Citadel was the Southern Conference champion; and Delaware was the East Coast Conference winner. The Dukes played well except for one inning.

In addition to their post-season accomplishments, the 1983 Dukes also put together one of their better regular seasons. A number of Dukes received All-ECAC South, All-East or all-regional team honors.
