Unlocking Opportunity: Understanding the JMU Centennial Scholars Program
James Madison University (JMU) is committed to providing access to higher education for qualified and deserving students. The Centennial Scholars Program (CSP) embodies this commitment, offering a holistic support system to Virginia residents who demonstrate financial need and academic potential. This article will delve into the requirements, benefits, and application process for the JMU Centennial Scholars Program, providing a comprehensive guide for prospective students.
The Core Mission: Empowering Virginia Students
The Centennial Scholars Program at James Madison University provides financial support to talented Pell grant-eligible students from the Commonwealth of Virginia with an emphasis on first-generation students or students with limited prior exposure to or knowledge of the college process. The program is rooted in the belief that financial constraints should not be a barrier to higher education for capable Virginia residents. We believe that qualified and deserving students who are residents of Virginia, PELL eligible and not able to finance the cost of attending college, should have the opportunity to graduate from a higher-education institution. The program aims to empower students to succeed academically and professionally.
A Holistic Support System
Through the program we provide students a holistic support system which includes academic support, peer mentoring, interaction with faculty mentors, cultural enrichment activities and career-oriented workshops throughout their undergraduate career. Beyond financial assistance, the CSP provides a comprehensive network of support designed to foster student success. This includes:
- Academic Support: Resources to help students excel in their coursework.
- Peer Mentoring: Guidance and encouragement from fellow students.
- Faculty Mentors: Opportunities to connect with professors and gain valuable insights.
- Cultural Enrichment Activities: Experiences that broaden perspectives and enhance personal growth.
- Career-Oriented Workshops: Preparation for future careers through skill-building and networking.
Financial Coverage: What the Scholarship Offers
Students who are accepted into CSP (referred to as "Centennials") are awarded a combination of federal, state, and institutional grants totaling the cost of in-state tuition, mandatory fees, housing, and meals. The financial aid package is in the form of grants that covers tuition and standard room and board rates including meals. This comprehensive coverage allows Centennial Scholars to focus on their studies and fully engage in the JMU community. All incoming Centennial Scholars are expected to select the All Access meal plan. If you choose a more expensive plan (such as All Access Plus), you will be responsible for covering the additional cost.

- Virginia Residency: Applicants must be residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Pell Grant Eligibility: The Centennial Scholars Program requires applicants to be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant. If you continue with the application and do not meet the criteria of being Federal Pell Grant eligible, your application will not be reviewed. Have you already submitted your FAFSA and received indication that you are eligible for the Federal Pell Grant?
- Financial Need: The program is designed for students who are not able to finance the cost of attending college without significant financial assistance.
- Academic Potential: While not explicitly merit-based, the program seeks students with the potential to succeed academically at JMU.
- First-Generation or Limited College Exposure: The program prioritizes first-generation students or those with limited prior exposure to the college process. At JMU, a "first-generation" college student is defined as one whose parent(s) or guardian(s) did not complete a four-year college degree. However, the Centennial Scholars Program is open to any student with limited prior exposure to or knowledge of the college process as many non-first-gen students have similar experiences. We encourage all interested applicants to apply, regardless of whether they meet the technical definition of first-generation.
Current students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 to qualify. If you’re in your first semester at JMU (as a first-year or transfer student), your GPA won’t be available until after fall grades are posted. We recommend drafting your essays in a separate Word document for easy copying and pasting later. Once your grades are available, you’ll be able to submit your application.
