Early Life and High School Career

A native of Murrieta, California, Shakir honed his skills as an all-purpose weapon at Vista Murrieta High School. As a senior, he demonstrated his versatility by racking up 906 rushing yards, 243 receiving yards, and 9 total touchdowns.

College Career at Boise State

Shakir committed to Boise State University, where he developed into a standout wide receiver. He appeared in 10 games with one start as a true freshman in 2018, contributing 240 total yards and a pair of scores. He finished third among Broncos wide receivers in snaps as a sophomore, behind John Hightower and Akilian Butler, but led the team in receptions (22.0% share).

Preseason Debut

Shakir made a splash in his NFL debut during a preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts. He led the Bills with five catches for 92 yards in the 27-24 victory. Buffalo quarterback Case Keenum, who started the game, praised Shakir, saying, "He has a bright future." Shakir caught two passes on Buffalo’s first drive and had a team-high three catches for 46 yards by halftime. He added back-to-back catches of 25 and 21 yards on the Bills’ opening drive of the second half. His fifth catch, requiring him to spin and contort his body, was reminiscent of his acrobatic catches at Boise State.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott noted Shakir's natural feel for the position after the game. Shakir also returned punts, managing four yards on two returns.
