Kongregate Learn to Fly 2: Tips, Tricks, and Strategies for Crushing the Iceberg

Learn to Fly 2 is the sequel to the popular game Learn to Fly, challenging players to once again take to the skies as a determined penguin. After a disastrous encounter with an iceberg, the penguin is back with a vengeance, employing a dummy penguin and a variety of upgrades to destroy the icy obstacle that crushed his dreams. This guide provides valuable tips, tricks, and strategies to help you conquer the game's challenges, unlock its secrets, and ultimately, crush that iceberg.

Game Overview

In Learn to Fly 2, players control a penguin who is determined to fly and destroy the iceberg. The gameplay is similar to its prequel. The penguin uses a dummy to fly for him, because of the injuries. Players use the left and right arrow keys to steer and the space button to use a boost. The game features a story mode with obstacles, classic mode, and arcade mode. The game also features payloads, which help destroy Obstacles, and Sleighs, which help you to take off.

Story and Setting

Following the events of Learn to Fly, the penguin is hospitalized with head injuries from his iceberg collision. Unable to fly himself, he enlists a dummy penguin to do the flying for him. After upgrading the dummy's equipment to its maximum, he is eventually able to use it to destroy the iceberg. The penguin posts on his account for a social media site called Fakebook about his accomplishment, but is criticized and insulted. A secret ending shows the penguin watching as his dummy flies over the iceberg and toward the island of Mauritius, where a dodo is in his hut typing up insults about penguins in an edit to a Wikipedia article on the Emperor Penguin. Suddenly, the dummy comes in without warning and destroys his hut. The penguin is surprised. It is not revealed what happens to the dodo after his hut is destroyed.

Gameplay Mechanics

The core gameplay involves launching a penguin (or a dummy penguin) from a ramp and using various upgrades to increase flight distance, height, and speed. Players earn money and bonus points by completing flights and challenges, which can then be used to purchase upgrades and unlock new items in the bonus shop.

Controls

The controls in Learn to Fly 2 are relatively simple:

  • Left Arrow Key: Tilts the penguin upwards, increasing altitude but decreasing speed.
  • Right Arrow Key: Tilts the penguin downwards, increasing speed but decreasing altitude.
  • Space Bar: Activates boost.

Upgrades

Upgrading the Ramp Length and Ramp Height gives you increased launch speed and alters your launch angle. You can also upgrade your Sleigh, Glider, Booster and Payload in order to fly higher and further. Upgrades play a crucial role in achieving success in Learn to Fly 2. Key areas for upgrades include:

  • Ramp Length: Increases the distance the penguin travels on the ramp before launch, leading to higher initial speeds.
  • Ramp Height: Affects the launch angle, allowing for more controlled ascents.
  • Sleigh: Improves the initial launch, providing a speed boost at the start.
  • Glider: Enhances gliding capabilities, allowing the penguin to maintain altitude and travel longer distances.
  • Booster: Provides bursts of speed during flight.
  • Payload: Helps destroy obstacles.

It's very important that you have done the story mode first and gotten plenty of Bonus Points, because the hard badge will be impossible to get without MAXING OUT the top right 4 items in the bonus shop (feather, turbo, gas tank, anti-gravity), AS WELL AS the level 2 information meter. The level 2 information reader is what will tell you what your resistance is at.

Modes

There are three gameplay modes: story, classic, and arcade. Story mode introduces the new twist of obstacles, such as the iceberg that was your downfall in the first game, that must be destroyed in order to triumph. Classic mode is the same general idea as the first game, that is, fly to the right as far as you can.

General Tips and Strategies

Disperse your upgrades

While it may be tempting to just focus on one aspect of your gear, it is important to get a good distribution of upgrades. For example, having a really powerful rocket doesn’t mean much if you have a terrible glider. Instead, find a balance where everything is on roughly the same level.

Spend early and often

One key mistake that beginners make is saving up money for several rounds to get a really expensive item. Instead, use your funds every 2 or 3 rounds on a new upgrade that will help you out. These small upgrades will end up helping you go faster and further than you did before, which will speed up the coin-gaining process. You’ve got to spend tokens to make tokens. A good rule of thumb is that if you have to save up for more than 5 rounds to afford the item, you can't afford the item.

Mastering Flight

  • Launch Angle: Experiment with different launch angles to find the optimal trajectory for maximum distance. A good starting point is around a 5-degree resist angle.
  • Boost Usage: Use boosts strategically to maintain speed and altitude. Avoid overusing them, as fuel is limited. When using the thrusters, maintain a speed that is below the 30 redzone.
  • Gliding: When gliding down do not drop too fast and have a speed of 25-50.

Earning Currency

  • Challenges: Complete in-flight challenges to earn additional cash.
  • Bonus Points: Earn bonus points for completing tasks and earning medals. These points can be used in the bonus shop to purchase valuable items.

The Bonus Shop

The bonus shop offers a variety of items that can significantly enhance your gameplay. Consider purchasing items that lower gravity, reduce drag, or rig the calendar in your favor. These bonus shop items carry over between games, so you can restart the game with them already in place.

Advanced Strategies and Secrets

Secret Medals

Here's how to unlock secret medals:

  1. Click on your money when in shop
  2. Click on your money again afterwards
  3. Click on the space below the Whirlybird 512 (or to the left of the chopper if you have the omega catalog) in the "glider" tab of the shop
  4. Use the brick you got in #3 to destroy an object
  5. You don't need to be high up to get this, just run out fuel and LAND ON YOUR FEET
  6. Fall and land on your feet, sometimes Zeus will tell you to rise (this is a reference to an old game)
  7. Click on the penguins beak on the title menu
  8. Click on the medal displaying the description
  9. Start muted.

Omega Items

One of the best resources that you can unlock with battle points is the Omega book. This will give you access to omega items, which are the most powerful items in the game. This includes boosters, gliders, and sleds. While these items are expensive to unlock, they are well worth it. If you want to take your game to the next level, then the Omega book is crucial.

$25,000 Arcade Strategy

For the $25,000 arcade, the angle for the cruise missile you need to maintain ~220 speed is resistance 52. Use the H.I.G.H tech glider + Cruise Missle + $10k fuel.

Money Glitch

After clicking the ready button and reaching the screen right before you're about to launch, clicking the settings button and then pressing any key will get you stuck in the ramp and you'll launch very fast. You'll get lots of money. This only works for ramp length at 5 or less.

Hard Badge Tips

Trick to get HARD badge. Make Heigh Reward always with Glide Reward together. In the last map 225 mph speed is worthless. Make Distance and Speed Reward Together. Use Rewards to buy fast Gliders and the first Rocket and some fuel. For heighs Ramp heigh is very important do not forget. To get distance 6000, you need last Glider and Rocket (I didn't buy the middle rocket). Max FUEL, max Ramp Height , Accelerator and Air Resistence to level 8 or 9. Put the plane Horizontally and mantain speed 150-175 to reach that distance. If you can't get rewards together you simply won't get the last badge. For max speed, put the plane horizontally and waiste all fuel. For max heigh, put the plain Vertically and waiste almost all fuel and inmediatelly put it horizontally before it ends to not lose the gliding system.

Obtaining Distance

To get distance 6000, you need last Glider and Rocket (I didn't buy the middle rocket). Max FUEL, max Ramp Height , Accelerator and Air Resistence to level 8 or 9. Put the plane Horizontally and mantain speed 150-175 to reach that distance.

Achieving Maximum Speed and Height

  • Max Speed: Put the plane horizontally and waste all fuel.
  • Max Height: Put the plane vertically and waste almost all fuel and immediately put it horizontally before it ends to not lose the gliding system.

Overcoming Challenges

The Hard Badge

For all those of you struggling for the hard badge, take heart, and listen to some of the really good advice given here on the upvoted comments. After the 5 foot ramp, go for the glide time award first always, and then try to get the height and distance awards both in one shot.

Completing the Game Quickly

Some players have managed to complete the game in a remarkably short time. Here's a strategy for completing the hard challenge in 18 days:

  • Days 1-3: Do absolutely nothing. Need 17 points each round.
