Kyrene Community Education Programs: Nurturing Young Learners

Kyrene School District has a long-standing tradition of providing excellent education in Arizona for over a century. With a commitment to every student's growth, Kyrene offers a variety of programs designed to meet the diverse needs of its community. Among these are the Kyrene Community Education Programs, which provide opportunities for children aged 3-5 to develop the skills they need to succeed in kindergarten and beyond.

Preschool Programs: Preparing for Kindergarten

Kyrene provides many opportunities for children 3-5 years of age. These high-quality programs are geared to ensure children enter kindergarten ready to learn. All programs incorporate age-appropriate activities that help children reach their full potential cognitively, socially, physically and emotionally. Per state statute, students are considered Kindergarten eligible if they are five years old before September 1 of the current school year.

Kyrene School District is excited to share some important updates about our preschool program for the 2026-27 school year!

Choose from three high-quality preschool models - Signature, Community, and Integrated - with programs available on most elementary campuses.

Key Requirements and Licensing

It is important to note that children participating in these programs must have self-sufficient toileting skills unless otherwise noted on their Individualized Education Program (i.e., must be able to use the toilet consistently without frequent “accidents” in the child’s clothes or the use of diapers or pull-ups). All programs are licensed by the Arizona Department of Health Services, 150 N.18th Ave., 4th Floor, Phoenix 85007 | 602-364-2539.

Families who are awarded the scholarship are not required to pay to attend the 12-hour preschool class. The scholarship does not apply to families who have DES funds assigned. Kyrene School District does not accept DES funds. Other eligibility requirements apply.

A District of Excellence

Kyrene School District is one of Arizona’s leading public school districts, providing excellence in education for more than a century. For over 135 years, families have chosen Kyrene for our high academic standards, engaging learning environments, and a commitment to every student’s growth. No matter where your child is in their academic journey, there’s a place for them to thrive in Kyrene.

Beyond Preschool: A Comprehensive Education

Kyrene’s commitment to student success extends beyond preschool. The district offers a rigorous, state-aligned curriculum that helps every child learn and grow through engaging, hands-on instruction. At Kyrene’s middle schools, students experience challenging academics and choice-driven learning led by expert teacher teams.

Community Engagement and Recognition

The youngest students at Kyrene de la Estrella Elementary are learning the importance of kindness and community by participating in a donation drive to benefit the Kyrene Family Resource Center. Students at Kyrene Middle School (KMS) came together for a single day of service that will make an impact both here at home and around the world.

Kyrene is already home to one of the nation’s premiere campuses for the college and career readiness program, Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID). Now, it is also home to AVID’s Secondary Principal of the Year.

Kyrene has once again received national recognition for exemplary financial stewardship, earning the prestigious Meritorious Budget Award (MBA) from the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) for the fourth straight year. Nationwide, fewer than 150 districts earn this award each year.

Six teachers in Kyrene School District will partner with professional artists this year through the City of Tempe’s Arts in Schools residency program, and students will reap the rewards. Funded by Tempe Community Arts, the Arts in Schools residencies benefit both students and teachers, giving students new opportunities to explore creative techniques while offering teachers collaboration and support to enrich their instruction.
