Limestone University Baseball: A Legacy of Saints on the Diamond
Limestone University, nestled in Gaffney, South Carolina, boasts a rich athletic history, and its baseball program holds a special place within that tradition. From its humble beginnings in 1987 to its current standing, the Limestone University baseball team, known as the Saints, has etched its name in the annals of collegiate baseball.
The Founding Father: Gaylord Perry and the Program's Inception
The genesis of the Limestone University baseball program can be traced back to one iconic figure: Gaylord Jackson Perry. A Hall of Fame pitcher with a remarkable 22-season Major League Baseball career, Perry brought instant credibility and a winning pedigree to the newly formed program in 1987.
Perry's impact extended beyond the field. According to Limestone President Dr. Darrell Parker, Perry left an indelible mark on the lives of his students and was considered a cherished friend of the university. His contributions were further recognized during the $4 million renovation of Limestone's Winnie Davis Hall of History.
During his four seasons at the helm, Perry steered the Saints to an impressive 81-57 overall record, including three 20-win seasons. This early success laid a solid foundation for the program's future growth and established a culture of competitiveness.
From NAIA to NCAA Division II: A Journey of Growth
Before joining the South Atlantic Conference (SAC), Limestone competed for championships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The institution gained membership in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Division II in 1991 and began competing for NCAA championships when it joined the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference in 1998, later known as Conference Carolinas.

In July 2020, Limestone transitioned to the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) for most sports, marking a significant step in the program's evolution. The Saints maintained CC membership in two sports, specifically men's wrestling and women's acrobatics & tumbling. Men's wrestling is one of two sports in which the SAC and CC operate as a single league, the other being women's field hockey. The SAC operated the field hockey championship, while CC operates the wrestling championship. The men's volleyball team competed as an independent.
Notable Achievements and National Recognition
Over the years, the Saints baseball team has consistently demonstrated its prowess on the national stage. Along with baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's lacrosse, softball, men's soccer, men's wrestling, and men's and women's tennis teams have all been ranked on the national level.
Individual Success and Professional Aspirations
The Limestone University baseball program has served as a springboard for numerous student-athletes seeking to pursue their dreams at the professional level. Twelve student-athletes have gone on to play professionally in their sport, with seven of those signing professional baseball contracts.
