Madden Iamaleava: A UCLA Recruiting Profile
While Madden Iamaleava may be further down the depth chart than some other true freshmen quarterbacks, his presence on the UCLA Bruins this season holds significant value. Although he may not see much, if any, playing time this season, his true value lies in his relationship with his brother, Nico Iamaleava, the Bruins' star quarterback.
Sibling Synergy: A Boost for Nico
Madden's transfer to Westwood from Arkansas shortly after his older brother's move has created a unique dynamic. This marks the first time since Nico's senior year of high school that the brothers have been on the same team during the offseason. Nico believes this proximity is beneficial, stating, "It feels so great to just have my little brother in the room with me. Any nuggets I can give to him to help him be a better person, better quarterback, I try to do that on a day-to-day basis."
From Arkansas to Westwood: Madden's Journey
During his spring camp with the Arkansas Razorbacks, Madden Iamaleava was reportedly positioned as the third-string quarterback, a promising start for a true freshman. However, the quarterback landscape at UCLA presented a different scenario.
The Backup Battle: Duncan and Clarkson Emerge
The competition for the backup quarterback position behind Nico Iamaleava has been a focal point during training camp. What was initially perceived as a four-way battle appears to have narrowed down to two key contenders: Luke Duncan and Ole Miss transfer Pierce Clarkson.
Head coach DeShaun Foster acknowledged the ongoing competition, stating, "It's still up for grabs. I don't want to say that somebody has taken a step forward, but I think that Luke is trying to take advantage of his opportunities. And I would say Pierce is doing the same thing. They're just trying to find a way to really grab it and just run with it. They're both still getting opportunities with the twos." While Foster did not explicitly rule out other quarterbacks, his emphasis on Duncan and Clarkson suggests they are the frontrunners.

Iamaleava's Potential: A Glimpse into the Future
DeShaun Foster had a lot of work ahead of him to improve a 2025 recruiting class that his predecessor Chip Kelly basically ignored and Iamaleava is widely regarded as one of the top signal-callers in the 2025 class.
Iamaleava is ranked as the 11th-best quarterback prospect by 247 Sports, sharing the same score (91) as Georgia commit Ryan Montgomery. ESPN is the highest on the Long Beach quarterback, rating him as the 83rd overall player in the 2025 recruiting class and the seventh-best player at his position.
High School Success: A Foundation for the Future
Madden Iamaleava, the younger brother of Tennessee Volunteers starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava, saw playing time early for the varsity team from 2021-’22. He threw his first 2 touchdown passes as a varsity quarterback in his freshman season, then saw more playing time as a sophomore. He broke out as a starter this past season as a junior. Leading Warren’s football program, the 6-foot-3 quarterback completed 196-of-311 attempts, averaging 11.66 yards per attempt with a 43-4 TD-INT ratio.
A Highly Sought-After Recruit
UCLA faced stiff competition in their pursuit of Iamaleava, with several prominent programs vying for his commitment. Tennessee, Auburn, Washington, Miami, TCU, and SMU were among the schools that expressed interest in the talented quarterback.
