Navigating Madonna University's Blackboard: A Comprehensive Guide

This article provides a comprehensive guide to navigating Madonna University's Blackboard system, covering essential aspects such as civil discourse, search functionalities, and accessing MYPortal. Whether you're a new student or a returning one, this information will help you make the most of your online learning experience.

Fostering Civil Discourse in the Online and Face-to-Face Classroom

A positive and courteous learning environment is paramount for all students. Madonna University Core Values emphasize the importance of respectful interactions. Students must recognize the impact of their behavior on others, both online and offline. Striving to cultivate a supportive learning environment and demonstrating courtesy towards fellow students and instructors is expected.

Thoughtful Communication

Always think before you speak or write. Use vocabulary and a tone appropriate for an academic setting. Keep discussions relevant to the course material. Personal chatting and off-topic posts should be reserved for other platforms.

Netiquette Essentials

Avoid using all caps in online communication, as it is perceived as yelling. Ensure appropriate grammar and sentence structure. Avoid slang like "R U" instead of "are you," as it can hinder understanding and does not promote the development of writing and vocabulary skills. Emoticons are acceptable if used appropriately.

Respectful Dialogue

Differing opinions in the college classroom are valuable and can lead to a deeper understanding of course content. Integrity, civility, and respect for others are essential. Treat people in the online learning environment the same as you would face-to-face. It's easier to depersonalize responses online, which can sometimes lead to disrespectful behavior. Remember that there is a person behind every name on your screen.

Respecting Others' Time

College classes often require group work, regardless of the learning environment. Respecting the time of others in your group will lead to a more positive experience. Be mindful that not everyone works best under the pressure of looming deadlines, and vice versa.

Mastering Blackboard Search Functionality

Blackboard's search functionality is a powerful tool for finding information within courses and groups. Understanding how to use it effectively can save you time and effort.

Basic Search Terms

Entering multiple terms in the search bar will return results that contain all of the terms in any order. For example, searching for "bus schedule" will return results that contain both "bus" and "schedule," but not results that contain only one of the terms. Searching within a course or group will prioritize results found within that specific context. If no results are found within the course or group, results from elsewhere will be displayed.

Advanced Search Operators

  • Include and Exclude: Use "+" to include specific terms and "-" to exclude them. For example, "+schedule -bus" will return results that contain "schedule" but not "bus."
  • Exact Matches: Enclose a word or phrase in quotes to find exact matches. For example, searching for "bus schedule" will search for that exact phrase.
  • Wildcards: Add "*" at the end of a term to find results that start with that term. For example, searching for "book*" will return results for "book," "books," "bookmark," and "bookmarks." You can also use "*" in the middle of a term.
  • Common Words: Common words like "and," "the," and "of" are typically excluded from searches. To include them, put a "+" in front of them.
  • Special Characters: The characters && || ! ( ) { } [ ] ^ ~ * ? : \ have special functions and are not searched for. To include them in your search, put a \ in front of the character.
