Discovering Transformation: The Maine Coast Semester Program

The Maine Coast Semester program at Chewonki offers a distinctive and transformative educational experience for motivated high school juniors. This four-month, college-preparatory semester school immerses students in a unique blend of rigorous academics and hands-on experiences set against the backdrop of Maine's stunning natural environment. The program is designed to take learning far beyond the traditional classroom, fostering personal growth, environmental stewardship, and community engagement.

Immersive Learning Environment

At Maine Coast Semester, the classroom extends far beyond four walls. Students explore diverse ecosystems, from rocky shores and salt marshes to boreal forests and sandy beaches. This place-based, experiential learning approach allows students to conduct science field labs on the shoreline, embark on backcountry adventures, and practice sustainable living on a daily basis. The program provides the tools and confidence to make a genuine difference in the world.

"With Maine coastal ecosystems as our classroom, I remember learning that biology was more than the study of cells and things growing in Petri dishes."

Academics with a Purpose

Maine Coast Semester provides ambitious high school juniors the opportunity to hone their critical thinking through the immersive scientific study of coastal ecology, place-based curriculum, and liberal arts. The academics are rigorous, and the faculty helps students keep the larger goals of cultivating curiosity, open-mindedness, and thoughtfulness always at the fore.

Students take five courses, including Natural History of the Maine Coast, Literature and the Land, and three other courses chosen from math (Algebra II through BC Calculus), world languages (French or Spanish), US History (Honors or A.P.), Art and the Natural World, and Environmental Issues. Every subject is advanced, ensuring academic rigor.

"Maine Coast Semester classes will challenge and inspire you in ways you’ve never imagined. You’ll take five courses: Natural History of the Maine Coast (our signature field ecology course); Literature and the Land; and three other courses chosen from math (Algebra II through BC Calculus), world languages (French or Spanish), US History (Honors or A.P.), Art and the Natural World, and Environmental Issues. Every subject is advanced; academic rigor is a given. From that baseline, we take learning to the next level."

Cultivating Independence and Self-Discovery

Many students who have attended the Maine Coast Semester program found the experience transformative. One former student shared, "I became more independent, realized that I had the power to choose my own life course, and met people from all over the country." This sentiment is echoed by many others who describe the program as a catalyst for personal growth and self-discovery.

The program encourages students to step outside of their comfort zones, learn from mistakes, and find their voice. The faculty and administration provide thoughtful care and communication, creating a supportive environment where students can thrive.

Building a Close-Knit Community

Students join a diverse group of peers from across the country, all brought together by a shared passion for learning and exploration. They live and work with 42 other motivated peers and 16 faculty on Chewonki Neck. Here, students are part of a close-knit community where collaboration is key. Whether farming, splitting wood, or working on essential tasks that keep the community thriving, every activity is an opportunity to develop skills that will set students apart in college and beyond. Students form lifelong friendships with their semester-mates, especially the 5-8 other students who share their cozy, wood-heated cabin. As one student noted, "I learned what a positive and inclusive community really is, and I gained a much deeper appreciation for the natural world."

Sustainable Living and Environmental Stewardship

During their Maine Coast Semester, students not only learn about sustainability, they live it every day. They split wood to heat their cabin, install solar panels, harvest produce, turn compost, and care for the farm animals that work for and feed them. This hands-on experience fosters a deep appreciation for the natural world and a commitment to protecting it. Part of the program's mission is educating each other about how to best protect our earth now and for generations to come.

Outdoor Leadership and Wilderness Exploration

The Maine Coast Semester program provides numerous opportunities for students to hone their outdoor skills. They gain valuable outdoor leadership skills and have a blast while on a weeklong wilderness trip in one of Maine’s many natural areas.

In the fall semester, students canoe on one of the state’s pristine rivers, sea kayak along the rocky coastline of the Gulf of Maine, or backpack on the Appalachian Trail. During the spring semester, they snowshoe or Nordic ski in the legendary North Woods. The program doesn’t assume any previous experience for these trips. Students also have other chances to hone their outdoor skills including a three-day solo on the Chewonki Neck peninsula.

Preparing for the Future

Maine Coast Semester is not just another academic program-it’s a transformative experience that prepares students for the future. More than any other experience, it promotes growth into a mature, self-knowing individual who can collaborate, share passions and values with others, and work hard toward a shared goal. The experience is stripped of unnecessary fluff.

The program challenges and inspires students in ways they’ve never imagined. It expands academics outside of the classroom and teaches them to apply what they have learned. As one alumnus shared, "Maine Coast Semester was the most powerful formal educational experience I’ve had-and that includes the Taft School, Yale, and Fordham. The teachers and students create a unique learning community that fully actualizes academic rigor, democratic learning, and environmental harmony. I am an educator today in Philadelphia, inspired largely by my experience at Chewonki."

A Parent's Perspective

One parent shared, "My daughter attended the Maine Coast Semester program during her Junior year in high school. This was a very different experience for her coming from a traditional high school in Kentucky. She thrived in so many ways! It was definitely a transformative experience."

Another parent noted, "As an only child, he learned to live with others cooperatively. He developed skills he would never have encountered in a traditional high school, especially an appreciation for the environment, cooking, maintaining the farm, heating their cabin, safely enjoying the outdoors, and being solo in the woods. He earned the highest grades he had ever had despite the academic program being more challenging than even his competitive private high school."
