Types of Scholarships: Auto-Match and Apply-To

There are two primary types of scholarships available: auto-match and apply-to.

Auto-Match Scholarships: Your complete, submitted MCCF General Application profile is enough to apply to any auto-match scholarships for which you are eligible.
Apply-To Scholarships: If you’d like to be considered for scholarships that require additional work outside of the General Application submission, you can answer supplemental questions within your My Opportunities tab.

Scholarship Award Amounts

The individual scholarship funds offer varying award amounts, depending on the size of the particular fund, the number of qualified applicants, and the directions given by the donors or fund advisors.

Eligibility and Requirements

While specific eligibility criteria vary depending on the scholarship, some general requirements and considerations apply to most Maricopa Foundation scholarships.

General Criteria

Our scholarships are not solely based on academic merit, athletic ability, or leadership experience. Some are based on these criteria but most are geared to applicants with some financial need, participation in community service, extra-curricular activities and/or work experience, a minimum GPA of 2.0 or 2.5, attendance at particular high schools or colleges or specific majors or career goals.

FAFSA

FAFSA stands for “Free Application for Federal Student Aid” and is often the most confusing, dreaded part of a student’s scholarship application process. FAFSA is not required for a majority of Foundation scholarships.

It does not cost anything to apply for our scholarships, though we do estimate it may take up to 45 minutes to complete the application in full.

Essay Essentials

Scholarship Selection Committees may have many essays to review. It is YOUR job to get their attention when they read your essay.

Be Personal, Honest, and Specific: Share your unique story and experiences.
Proofread Your Application: Have multiple people read your essay not only for spelling and grammar errors but also to check that your content has logical consistency and answers the questions.
Be Yourself: You don’t need to try to find the “right” answer.
Show, Don’t Tell: Use examples to individualize your essay and demonstrate the point you want to make.

Notification and Award Distribution

Award notifications will be sent out typically between July and August for Fall Scholarships. You will be required to meet all criteria to receive the scholarship which may include credits hours and college registered. You will also have an opportunity to provide a thank you note/video for the scholarship donor.

Paradise Valley Community College music student Patrick Cassidy has been awarded a full-ride scholarship worth $220,000 to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass. Cassidy’s musical journey at PVCC began in Spring 2024, after taking a few general education classes as a part-time student at Phoenix College.

Local Scholarships: John E. and Mary Lou Smith Scholarship

John E. John and Mary Lou Smith, longtime residents of Maricopa provided funds to establish a scholarship in their name. When the State of Arizona purchased the property that was Rotary Park, the Smiths donated a portion of the money from the sale to start the scholarship program. Both of the Smiths have been involved in the development of Maricopa for a number of decades. Mary Lou was a key figure in the development of the present library and supporter of the building of the new library. This scholarship supports Maricopa high school graduates in pursuing their educational dreams and opportunities. Applicants must be graduating in the current school year from a high school in the City of Maricopa.
