Alumni Journeys: Transformative Experiences and Lasting Impact

The experiences of alumni extend far beyond the classroom, shaping their lives and careers in profound ways. From unexpected adventures to cultural immersions and chance encounters, these journeys leave an indelible mark, fostering personal growth, global awareness, and lifelong connections.

Serendipitous Encounters and Enduring Love

Sometimes, the most significant outcomes of a program are those we least expect. One alumnus fondly recalls their time in East/West Germany in 1990, not for the academic rigor, but for a serendipitous encounter: "My favorite part of our program (East/West Germany in 1990) was meeting the man who would become my husband, Tony Paolucci BA ’91." Their story is a testament to the power of shared experiences to forge lasting bonds, as they celebrated their 27th anniversary in front of the student housing where they lived in East Berlin.

Unexpected Adventures and Enduring Nostalgia

Study abroad experiences often involve venturing into the unknown, sometimes leading to unexpected adventures. One alumnus recounts a memorable trip to Vladivostok, Russia: "The best experience, by far, was getting arrested on the Russian-North Korean-Chinese trijuncture." While an arrest might seem like a negative experience, the alumnus remembers the kindness and professionalism of the FSB agents, who "maintained a jovial and professional attitude throughout our arrest." They were provided with accommodation, warmth, and even shared cookies and coffee. This unexpected encounter left a lasting positive impression, leading the alumnus to feel "deeply nostalgic about this trip."

Immersive Experiences and Environmental Stewardship

For some, study abroad programs spark a passion for environmental stewardship. One alumnus describes a transformative canoe trip down the Whanganui River in New Zealand, led by Maori guides. Immersed in the natural beauty of the river, they explored caves, swam in nutrient-rich waters, and listened to the legend of the river’s creation. This experience had a profound impact, shaping their career path and leading them to work in environmental nonprofit communications: "I now work in environmental nonprofit communications, sit on the board of the Carmel River Watershed Conservancy, and am applying to grad schools to get an M.S."

The Ripple Effect of Global Perspectives

Even those who did not participate in traditional study abroad programs can be influenced by the global perspectives of their peers. One alumnus who participated in the Washington, D.C., program in 1970, observed how "the continual flow of classmates returning to campus from their trips abroad certainly brought new perspectives and appreciation for the wider world." This exposure inspired them to study abroad after graduation, spending two years attending schools in Denmark and traveling throughout Scandinavia.

Cultural Immersion and Lifelong Friendships

The opportunity to immerse oneself in a different culture can be a life-changing experience. In 1976, one alumnus had the "incredible opportunity to spend months in the South Pacific-Fiji, Tonga, Western Samoa, American Samoa, and Tahiti." They participated in local activities, such as "amazing fish drives, singing, education, dancing, and basket and tapa cloth making," and were deeply moved by the people they met. The most cherished aspect of their experience was "the lifelong friendships made and the reunions we’ve had since."

Overcoming Naivety and Embracing Freedom

For some, studying abroad is a transformative journey of self-discovery and broadened horizons. One alumnus from Montana recalls their year abroad in Munich, Germany (1987-88) as "the single most impressionable and impactful moment of my lifetime." They were struck by the stark contrast between East and West Germany, divided by "freedom and oppression." This experience challenged their naivety and instilled in them a deep appreciation for the world.

Diverse Paths, Shared Excellence

Alumni pursue a wide range of careers. They represent diverse fields, including human resources, business, finance, law, labor, nonprofits, and entrepreneurship. Their diverse paths reflect the versatility of their education and the impact they are making in their respective fields.

Connecting Generations Through Shared Experiences

The bonds formed extend across generations. Jay Waks ’68, J.D. ’71, P ’08, and his wife, Harriet, P ’08, traveled to Cairo, Egypt, to attend the wedding of Louisa Heywood ’20, an ILRie roughly 50 years his junior.

Recognition and Advocacy

Alumni are recognized for their achievements and contributions to society. Kenneth Kirschner ’75 will receive the ILR School’s 2026 Groat Award. After more than two decades advocating on the front lines of national public policy related to poverty and hunger, Robert Fersh ’72 founded Convergence Center for Policy Resolution.

Exploration and Discovery

Some alumni embrace exploration and discovery before settling on a career path. Stephen H. McKenna “MJ” Raade ’25 "wanted to sample everything" before settling on a career path. Christopher Fateh ’13 first entered ILR, he didn’t want to limit his future by choosing a career path.
