Michael Beck and His Impact on UCLA: A Legacy of Progress and Innovation

UCLA stands as a beacon of positive change, not only within California but also across the globe. Driven by the immense impact it has on the communities it serves, the university provides excellent education to a diverse student body and produces transformative research for the public good. Michael J. Beck has been a significant figure in UCLA's administrative landscape, contributing to its progress and innovation. This article delves into his contributions, exploring his role in various initiatives and his impact on the university's strategic goals.

A Focus on Strategic Planning and Institutional Effectiveness

UCLA's 2023-28 strategic plan centers on deepening its impact within the broader society, Los Angeles, and the university itself. A cornerstone of its future is strengthening institutional effectiveness. This involves transforming how services are delivered to better support the mission of education.

Michael Beck's Administration Department initiated the Research Concierge Program. This program supports faculty by coordinating their onboarding and relocation, aiming to improve faculty satisfaction and support programs across campus. The Environment, Health & Safety program tested the concept with the Portal program, focusing on onboarding faculty into campus safety programs. This program was expanded with support from the School of Medicine and named the Research Concierge Program. The program was jointly funded by Dr. Wakimoto, Vice Chancellor of Research and Creative Activities; Dr. Levine, Vice Chancellor of Academic Personal; and Michael Beck, Vice Chancellor of Administration. Laura Benscoter-Urquidez was hired as the program’s Director. Provost Dr. Emily Carter advanced it to full program status after its first year of success.

One IT: Modernizing UCLA's Digital Services

UCLA has launched One IT, an initiative aimed at aligning and modernizing its digital services by consolidating IT resources across campus under a single operating model. This initiative addresses challenges such as cyber risk, service inconsistencies, and limitations on innovation. One IT follows a three-phase approach: Consolidate, Rationalize, and Transform. It seeks to strengthen security, reduce risk, promote equity in digital access, and enable strategic investments to support the academic mission. Through campuswide governance, One IT aims to balance shared services with the unique needs of academic and research priorities.

The implementation of One IT involves a structured approach. IT leads and their teams began reporting to Digital and Technology Solutions while maintaining a dotted-line relationship with their current units. This model ensures continuity of local service and responsiveness to academic and operational needs during the rationalization assessment phase. The evaluation and rationalization of IT capabilities across campus will continue, working closely with unit leaders. The final phase will implement a modern, scalable shared services model that reflects the needs of the UCLA community.
