Red Thread Foundation Scholarship: Eligibility and Opportunities

The Red Thread Foundation for Women offers scholarships to support college-bound women of international backgrounds who will be entering an American college or university. These scholarships aim to close the gap between the cost of attendance at a college and a family’s own resources. If selected, scholars are awarded $1000 to help offset the cost of tuition, books, and living expenses. The foundation evaluates applicants based on various criteria, including academic achievements, leadership potential, community involvement, and financial need. In addition to financial assistance, the Red Thread Foundation provides mentorship and networking opportunities to scholarship recipients. Mentors are assigned to scholars to provide guidance and support throughout their academic journey.

General Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the Red Thread Scholarship Program, applicants must be enrolled in a college or university program in the fall semester; applicants to graduate programs are not eligible.

Nationality: The scholarship is typically open to women who are citizens or permanent residents of select Asian countries.

Field of Study: The scholarship is generally open to applicants in a wide range of academic disciplines, including science, technology, engineering, mathematics, social sciences, humanities, and the arts.

Academic Excellence: Applicants are typically required to demonstrate strong academic performance and achievements.

Leadership and Community Involvement: The foundation often values applicants who have demonstrated leadership potential and a commitment to making a positive impact in their communities.

Financial Need: The Red Thread Foundation Scholarship often takes into consideration the financial circumstances of applicants.

Application Process

The application consists of several short-answer questions, two essays, and one letter of recommendation. We require that at least one of your recommenders be an academic reference, such as a teacher or a guidance counselor. To apply, it is necessary to sign in to or create a Google account. The application form must be submitted online by the application deadline to be considered. We will select a short list of candidates to interview by phone. Interviews will be 30 minutes long.

Scholarship Opportunities for First-Generation Students

The Red Thread Foundation for Women awards a $1,000 scholarship to female students who are first-generation college students. Citizens are invited to apply. Scholarship winner can take part in mentorship opportunities that focus on career guidance and building future networks.

First-generation college students face many financial barriers. The definition of a first generation college student means that neither of the student’s parents earned a college degree at the baccalaureate level or higher. Note that the below list is not exhaustive, but is intended to provide a starting place for first generation students to launch their scholarship searches.

APIQWTC Scholarship

Eligibility: Open to LGBTQ+ students who identify as Asian/Pacific Islander. 4-year university in the upcoming academic year. Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA for undergraduate and graduate students and 3.0 GPA for high school students.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund

Eligibility: Open to high school seniors who have at least one parent with Hispanic heritage. Must be a US resident planning to attend a two or four-year college or university.

Harry S. Truman Scholarship

Eligibility: Open to full-time students pursuing bachelor’s degrees with junior-level academic standing.

Eligibility: Open to ALL high school and college students in the US.

Ron Brown Scholarship Program

Eligibility: Open to high school seniors planning to enroll full-time in bachelor’s programs at four-year colleges and universities. Must be a US citizen.

Eligibility: Open to African American high school seniors planning to attend four-year colleges/universities in the US.

Eligibility: Open to Black/African American high school seniors planning to attend any accredited four-year college in the US.

Eligibility: Open to Black and African American high school senior students with financial need pursuing careers in technology at four-year universities in the US.

Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship

Eligibility: Open to minority high school seniors who plan to earn a baccalaureate degree from an accredited, four-year college or university with financial assistance.

Act Six Scholarship

Eligibility: Open to high school seniors with financial need living in one of Act Six's program sites.

The Dream.US Scholarship

Eligibility: Open to highly motivated DREAMers or undocumented students with significant, unmet financial need.

Hadden Scholarship

Eligibility: Open to US high school seniors with demonstrated financial need who are planning to enroll in four-year institutions. In awarding Hadden Scholarships, the Youth Foundation considers scholastic achievement, character, leadership, volunteerism, and financial need.

Denver Scholarship Foundation

Eligibility: Open to Black/African American females from the Denver metro area. Must be a high school senior planning to enroll in a two or four-year college. 4-year university in the upcoming academic year. Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA for undergraduate and graduate students and 3.0 GPA for high school students.

California Student Aid Commission

Eligibility: Open to ethnic minority students in California interested in becoming educators, school nurses, school counselors or school therapists.

Arts for Life! Scholarship

Eligibility: Open to college students (sophomores and above) who identify as a female/woman and pursue an ABET-accredited bachelor or graduate student program in preparation for careers in engineering, engineering technology, and computer science.

Point Foundation Scholarship

Eligibility: Open to LGBTQ+ students and allies living in Washington State, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, and Oregon (you can attend college anywhere in the US). Must be currently working towards an undergraduate degree of any kind.

Eligibility: Open to northern and central California community college students who can show dedicated service to the LGBTQ+ community.

Eligibility: Open to college students residing in the US, who identify as LGBTQ+.

Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes

Eligibility: Open to students ages 13-19 who are serving in a leadership role on some sort of project aimed at repairing the world.

Eligibility: Open to young leaders ages 14-18 who are bringing powerful vision and real change to their communities.

Eligibility: Open to students ages 16-26 who are passionate about creating a better future and making a positive impact on their community.

Sallie Mae Scholarship

Eligibility: Open to high school seniors and students enrolled at accredited colleges/universities in the US. Minimum 3.0 GPA. Must be pursuing a degree in the medical field such as therapy, nursing, medicine, nutrition, laboratory science, dentistry, health law, etc.

Dr. Juan Andrade Jr. Scholarship for Young Hispanic Leaders

Eligibility: Open to Hispanic students who are high school seniors or undergraduate freshmen, sophomores, or juniors. Must have at least one parent with Hispanic ancestry.

The Gates Scholarship

Eligibility: This full-ride scholarship program is open to high achieving high school seniors with financial need. Minimum 3.5 GPA. Must be planning to attend a four-year college or university in the US.

Patsy Takemoto Mink Education Foundation Scholarship

Eligibility: Open to female students with financial need who are enrolled in or have been accepted to a vocational/skills training program or an undergraduate degree program.

Eligibility: Open to female-identifying students in Washington state with financial need.

Eligibility: Open to high school seniors in the US with Hispanic heritage.

Eligibility: Open to women 25 years of age or older who are returning to school.

Eligibility: Open to high school seniors and undergraduate students passionate about Science, Technology, Engineering or Math.

National Hispanic Health Foundation Scholarship

Eligibility: Open to high school, college, and graduate school students of all years. Applicants are not required to be Hispanic; an affinity for the health of Hispanic communities and an interest in participating in NHHF Scholars Alumni activities is required.

The Dell Scholars Program

Eligibility: This full-ride scholarship is open to minority, pell-eligible high school seniors who are planning to enroll in a four-year degree program in the US.
