A Brief History

Mid-America Christian University was originally established as South Texas Bible Institute (STBI) in Houston, Texas, on September 14, 1953, by Dr. Max R. Gaulke. The college initially utilized the facilities of the First Church of God. In the fall of 1955, STBI restructured from a three-year institute to a four-year college and was renamed Gulf-Coast Bible College (GBC).

The relationship between the college and the Church of God began in June 1968, while the institution was still known as Gulf-Coast Bible College and located in Houston, Texas. In 1975, John W. moving to Oklahoma City placed the college under a new regional accreditation body, the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Students pursuing this degree are required to complete a minimum of 33 semester hours of general education courses, including courses in the humanities or fine arts, the social or behavioral sciences, and the natural sciences or mathematics.
