Montgomery College's "Feds to Eds" Grant: Addressing Teacher Shortages and Supporting Displaced Federal Workers

Maryland is taking proactive steps to address teacher shortages and support displaced federal workers through innovative programs. Governor Wes Moore recently announced a significant investment in this effort, highlighting the state's commitment to both its residents and the future of education. The "Feds to Eds" initiative, exemplified by Montgomery College's ACET Flex program, offers a pathway for federal employees to transition into teaching careers through targeted training and support.

Maryland's Commitment to Addressing Teacher Shortages

The Moore-Miller Administration recognizes the critical need to address the teacher shortage across Maryland. As of mid-March, there were over 1,600 teacher vacancies, underscoring the urgency of the situation. To combat this, the state is implementing multifaceted strategies, including the Teacher Quality and Diversity Program, and the recent signing of The Excellence in Maryland Public Schools Act. This act aims to attract fully licensed teachers through a national recruitment campaign and the Grow Your Own Educators Program, which supports debt-free pathways to teacher licensure.

The Teacher Quality and Diversity Program: A Bridge to Education Careers

The Teacher Quality and Diversity Program, supported by a $1 million grant from the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC), is a key component of Maryland's strategy. This program provides funding to 11 colleges and universities, enabling them to create or expand flexible, online, and accelerated pathways to teacher licensure. These pathways are specifically designed to support displaced federal workers in securing jobs in education through targeted training, licensure support, and school district partnerships.

Governor Moore emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "This funding helps our federal workers land on their feet, while also addressing the teacher shortage throughout our state. Together, we will continue to innovate, collaborate, and protect our people in the face of attacks from Washington."

Montgomery College's ACET Flex: From Feds to Eds Program

Montgomery College is playing a leading role in this effort with its ACET Flex: From Feds to Eds program. Montgomery College President Dr. Jermaine Williams noted, "Through the Maryland Higher Education Commission’s Teacher Quality and Diversity Grant, MC’s Alternative Certification for Effective Teachers program will be strengthened to facilitate degree-holding professionals who want to begin a new career sharing their knowledge and educating students in the classroom. Drawing on the talent and commitment of federal workers will empower students in Maryland to achieve even more."

The ACET model has been training teachers since 2006, with the goal of attracting career-changers into education and accelerating the placement of professionals with industry experience into Maryland classrooms.

The Value of Federal Employees in Education

Former federal employees possess a wealth of skills and experience that can be invaluable in the classroom. Their diverse work experience, leadership skills, and commitment to public service make them ideal candidates for teaching positions. The "Feds to Eds" program recognizes this potential and provides a structured pathway for these individuals to transition into education careers.

Participants like Abigail Norris, a former budget team lead at the General Services Administration, and Jake Baroch, who was at the beginning of his government service career, exemplify the dedication and talent that federal workers can bring to the field of education.

Participating Institutions and Their Programs

In addition to Montgomery College, several other institutions are receiving awards to support their teacher preparation programs:
