Navigating New Jersey Continuing Legal Education Requirements
New Jersey, as a Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) state, ensures that its attorneys remain up-to-date on legal developments and ethical standards. Every active NJ attorney is required to complete 24 credit hours of CLE every two years. This article delves into the specifics of New Jersey's CLE requirements, including credit requirements, compliance periods, and available learning formats.
Core CLE Requirements for New Jersey Attorneys
Every active lawyer in New Jersey must complete 24 credit hours of continuing legal education (CLE) every 2 years. This ensures that attorneys stay informed about changes in the law and maintain a high level of professional competence. Within these 24 credits, specific areas of focus are mandated to promote ethical conduct and inclusivity within the legal profession.
Specialty Credits: Ethics, Diversity, and Inclusion
Of the 24 required credits, at least 5 must be in ethics and/or professionalism. Furthermore, 2 of these 5 credits must specifically address diversity, inclusion, and elimination of bias. This focus reflects the importance of ethical practice and a commitment to creating a more equitable and inclusive legal environment.
Live CLE Requirement
The New Jersey CLE Board had revoked the Covid exception and reinstated the Live CLE requirement in NJ effective 1/1/2024. Additionally, NJ has amended the CLE Regulations with BCLE Reg. 103:1(n) and expanded the definition of Live Instruction. Live Interactive webinars meet this definition of Live CLE in NJ.
Live Exemption
NJ rule 201:8(a) states that attorneys who reside in, work in, and are licensed in a mandatory CLE jurisdiction that does not require Live CLE are also exempt from Live CLE for NJ. These attorneys can take all 24 credits of their requirement with on-demand courses.

Compliance Groups and Deadlines
To manage the CLE process efficiently, every active lawyer is permanently assigned to one of two compliance groups for CLE purposes, with one group reporting each year. New Jersey attorneys certify compliance on the Annual Attorney Registration and Billing Statement. Random audits of individual attorneys will be performed to ensure the overall compliance of attorneys.
- Compliance Group 1: Attorneys born in January through June report in even-numbered years. Attorneys in Group 1 are required to complete their credits by December 31 in odd-numbered years and certify their compliance on their Annual Attorney Registration and Billing Statement the following year.
- Compliance Group 2: Attorneys born in July through December report in odd-numbered years. Attorneys in Group 2 are required to complete their credits by December 31 in even-numbered years and certify their compliance on their Annual Attorney Registration and Billing Statement the following year.
Each New Jersey attorney is assigned to one of two compliance groups:
