Navigating Nichols College: A Comprehensive Guide to Campus Life

Nichols College offers a unique and enriching campus experience. The campus environment plays a crucial role in shaping the overall student experience. This guide provides comprehensive information about navigating the campus, including directions, safety measures, parking regulations, and an overview of residence hall options.

Directions to Nichols College

From Points North:

  1. Take I-290 to Auburn, where I-290 becomes I-395 South.
  2. Follow I-395 to Exit 4B (Sutton Road/Oxford Center).
  3. Turn right off the ramp and stay in the right lane.
  4. Go straight through the light at Oxford Center (Cumberland Farms on the right).
  5. Continue straight past the light for 0.8 miles and take a left onto Dudley Road (produce stand is on the right).
  6. Follow this road for 3.7 miles, staying straight through a four-way stop sign.
  7. Dudley Road becomes Dudley/Oxford Road at the town line.
  8. As the road forks, bear right to continue on Dudley/Oxford Road for 2 miles through two stop signs, then straight onto the Nichols campus.

From Points East & West:

  1. Take the Mass Pike to Exit 90 in Auburn and get on 395 South.
  2. Follow the directions above from Points North.

From Points South:

  1. Take I-95 North to I-395 North to Exit 2 (Webster) and turn left off the ramp.
  2. Go straight through the first set of traffic lights.
  3. Follow Route 12 South (Route 12 will turn left through Webster center).
  4. Continue through Webster center.
  5. After the railroad tracks, continue straight into Dudley.
  6. You will come to a set of lights with Bayer Motors on your left. Route 12 will bear off to the left, but stay straight on Route 197 - do not turn left. Route 197 is also Main Street in Dudley.
  7. Stay straight on Main Street (Rt. 197) until you reach a set of lights next to Cumberland Farms.
  8. Turn right directly after Cumberland Farms onto Airport Rd.
  9. Follow Airport Road and bear right at the Dudley Hill Golf Course.
  10. Take the first left onto Center Road and proceed directly onto the Nichols campus.

From Hartford, CT:

  1. Take I-84 East towards Boston.
  2. Take Exit 2 (Sturbridge/Southbridge).
  3. When on the exit ramp, keep right at the fork.
  4. Turn left onto Haynes Street.
  5. Turn right onto MA-131/Main Street.
  6. Proceed to the rotary in Southbridge and take the first right onto MA-169/MA-131.
  7. You will pass through Dudley, Massachusetts, then enter Thompson, Connecticut, for a short while.
  8. Turn left onto Rt-197 in Thompson.
  9. You will re-enter Dudley, Massachusetts on Route 197.
  10. Turn left onto Center Road.

Nichols College prioritizes the safety and security of its students, faculty, and staff.

Security Reports

The Annual Security Report, published in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, is available for review. This report provides detailed information on campus security policies, crime statistics, and safety procedures.

Access to Campus Facilities

With the exception of residence halls, most facilities are open to the public during day and evening hours when classes are in session. When Nichols is closed, all buildings are locked, and only faculty, staff, and students with proper ID are admitted. Entrance to all residence halls is restricted at all times.

Public Safety Officers

Public Safety Officers are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, throughout the year. These officers receive continual training and are certified in emergency medical response procedures, including First Responder, CPR, and AED. The officers are skilled at creating an environment that is safe, respectful, and conducive to study.

Relationship with Dudley Police Department

Nichols College also falls under the jurisdiction of the Dudley Police Department (DPD). The Nichols Department of Public Safety maintains a strong and coordinated working relationship with the DPD.

Parking on Campus

Student parking is available for residential and day commuter students within designated areas. All vehicles must be registered with the Public Safety Office before parking on campus.

Residence Halls: Your Home on the Hill

Nichols College offers a variety of residence halls to suit different preferences and needs. These halls provide students with spaces to work, play, and grow together as a community.

Shamie Hall

Shamie Hall is the largest residence hall on campus, housing more than 330 students. Common lounge areas, study rooms, and laundry rooms are located on each of the three floors. Shamie Hall primarily houses first-year students in triple rooms with private bathrooms in each room. Right outside of Shamie Hall is a wiffle ball field, half basketball court, and a patio for students to enjoy.

The 2nd-floor Common Lounge features a pool table and two big-screen TVs. Shamie Hall is air-conditioned and has elevator access for students.

Budleigh Hall

Located just in front of the Athletic Center, Budleigh Hall has a distinctive, classical architecture. The building is coed by room and has two large study lounges, community bathrooms, and accommodations for 75 students. It includes single occupancy rooms, however, it is mostly double occupancy rooms.

Center Hall

Center Hall is located between Remillard Hall and Budleigh Hall, and directly beside North Hall. The building is a single-story, air-conditioned, all-male residence hall with a community bathroom, a study/recreation lounge, and laundry facilities. Students in Center Hall live in double-occupancy rooms, and in two quads.

Olsen Hall

This green residence hall has recycled flooring, geothermal heating and cooling, low VOC paint, and Energy Star appliances. It is coed by room with community bathrooms on each floor and a popular lounge/study space. It houses 65 students in double and triple-occupancy rooms.

Remillard Hall

Remillard Hall (Rem) is home to more than 215 returning students on four floors of cluster concept housing. This brick and steel-framed residence hall includes suites of double rooms with a shared bath, triple rooms with a shared bath, and a few single rooms with personal baths. The lower level features two study lounges with a flat-screen TV in each, a public bathroom, and a large laundry room. The building is located close to the Athletic Center and parking. In the Summer of 2018, the Rem main lobby received a beautiful renovation adding a community kitchen space.

Kuppenheimer Hall

Kuppenheimer (Kupp) Hall houses approximately 40 students and is comprised of 4-person (2 bedroom) suites with the exception of one 3-person suite. All suites come with their own bathroom and furnished living space. Kuppenheimer Hall’s laundry facilities are located on the first floor. A kitchen is located on the second floor of Kuppenheimer Hall for all residents of the building to enjoy.

Winston Hall

Winston Hall is located on Center Road, just a short walk from the academic buildings. This residence is co-ed by room with community bathrooms on each floor and houses 16 students in mostly double-occupancy rooms. Winston Hall features laundry facilities, a shared kitchen, and a large study/recreation lounge. Winston Hall received brand new laundry machines in 2021.

North Hall

North Hall overlooks the volleyball and tennis courts and is located directly next to Center Hall. This residence is a single-story, air-conditioned, all-female building with a community bathroom, a study/recreation lounge, and laundry facilities. Students in North Hall live in double-occupancy rooms.

Copper Beech I & II

The Copper Beech Residence Halls provide apartment-style living for students. Each building houses 60 students in a combination of 2 bedroom/1 bath and 4 bedroom/2 bath suites. Each apartment provides a full kitchen and a living area. All students have access to an on-campus convenience store, the Becker Market, which is located in the Copper Beech I lobby, and an ATM (non-bank specific) and vending machines are located in the Copper Beech II lobby.

All apartments come with a full-size refrigerator, oven, and stovetop in the kitchen area, and furnished living/dining area.
