Admissions at NJIT

Freshman and Transfer Students

NJIT welcomes applications from both freshmen, typically graduating from high school, and transfer students who have completed college coursework. Application Requirements

Applicants for admission must have completed a minimum of 16 secondary school units. High school graduates who have not previously attended college may apply for admission as freshmen. Exceptional students meeting the course and standardized examination requirements for a freshman program may begin as freshmen without completing the senior year of high school or receiving a high school diploma.

Transfer Credits

NJIT considers transfer credits for matriculated students. Credit is awarded for completed courses equivalent to those in the NJIT curriculum, with a minimum grade of C required. Transfer candidates for the Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology may submit a transcript indicating an associate's degree in technology (AAS) or related areas. Applicants with an equivalent educational background but without the degree will also be considered.

Joint Admissions Agreements

To facilitate a smooth transition from New Jersey community colleges, NJIT has Joint Admissions Agreements specifying courses that maximize transferable credits. These agreements allow high school graduates to be simultaneously admitted to both the community college and NJIT. International Students

Students whose native language is not English must submit TOEFL or IELTS results and may be required to take English as a Second Language courses. Transfer credit for coursework completed outside the United States requires credential evaluation by an accredited independent service like World Education Services, Inc. Accelerated Programs

NJIT offers several accelerated programs in collaboration with other institutions:

Seven-Year Medical Programs: In partnership with Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (RNJMS), St. George's University School of Medicine (SGUSOM), or American University of Antigua West Indies, students spend three years at NJIT in an accelerated curriculum, followed by medical studies.
Seven-Year Dental Program: In conjunction with RNJMS, a similar accelerated plan leads to a Dental degree.

Credit by Examination

A student must earn a test score at or above the level designated by the department to receive credit. Readmission

Minors

A minor consists of a minimum of 15 credits of coursework within a single area of study or across several disciplines. At least six credits of courses that make up the minor must be upper-level courses. Any undergraduate student in good academic standing who also has at least sophomore standing may declare a minor. Students majoring in a program may not earn a minor made up exclusively of courses from that program. In addition, at least nine credits used to satisfy the minor requirements should be counted only toward the minor; in other words, these nine credits should not overlap with requirements for the major or another minor. Also, at least nine credits used to satisfy the minor requirements must be completed at NJIT or Rutgers-Newark if the minor is offered by an academic department federated with Rutgers-Newark. A student can be awarded a minor only when a bachelor’s degree is awarded.
