Norman Osborn and the Spider-Man: Freshman Year Animated Series
"Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man," initially announced as "Spider-Man: Freshman Year," is an American animated television series created by Jeff Trammell for Disney+. Based on Marvel Comics' Spider-Man, it is the 12th television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) produced by Marvel Studios Animation. The series delves into Peter Parker's origin story and early days as Spider-Man, set in an alternate timeline from the main MCU films and television series, where Norman Osborn becomes Peter's mentor instead of Tony Stark.
Production and Development
Marvel Studios Animation was developing at least three more series in addition to "What If…?" by June 2021. These were in various stages of development and were not expected to debut until at least 2023. "Spider-Man: Freshman Year" was announced during a Disney+ Day event in November 2021, with Jeff Trammell as head writer.
Trammell was initially asked to pitch for "X-Men '97" but impressed Marvel Studios with his desire to tell an original story, despite plans for that series to be a revival of "X-Men: The Animated Series." Marvel Studios' animation head Brad Winderbaum and president Kevin Feige felt Trammell would be a good fit for a Spider-Man series.
During Marvel Studios Animation's panel at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2022, "Spider-Man: Freshman Year" and other projects were referred to as being part of the "Marvel Animated Multiverse." A second season, titled "Spider-Man: Sophomore Year," was announced at the panel. The series was retitled "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" by December 2023. In January 2025, Trammell explained that the series was not limited to covering one school year per season. When Marvel Studios decided to change the series' title, Trammell provided a list of options to consider, with Feige suggesting "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man."
Winderbaum stated in January 2025 that a third season had been greenlit, and Trammell was listed as both showrunner and head writer by Marvel.com. The following month, Winderbaum mentioned that the second season would be released in 2026, more than a year after the first.

Alternate Timeline and Animation Style
The series was originally planned to be set within the "Sacred Timeline" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), before Peter Parker / Spider-Man's MCU introduction in "Captain America: Civil War" (2016), and depict the character's origin story. Marvel Studios decided not to tell the origin story in the MCU films because they felt audiences would already know it due to the Spider-Man films directed by Sam Raimi (2002-2007) and Marc Webb (2012-2014).
The creative team found working within the Sacred Timeline too restrictive regarding which characters and comic book elements could be included, so they decided to move the series to an alternate timeline, taking advantage of the MCU's multiverse concept.
Since Marvel Studios Animation does not have a "house style," the creative team was free to develop an animation style that differed from previous series "What If…?" and "X-Men '97." They wanted to avoid copying one of the many different animation styles used for the animated Spider-Verse films and settled on paying homage to the early "The Amazing Spider-Man" comic books, specifically those featuring art by Steve Ditko and John Romita Sr.
Premise and Story Arcs
"Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" explores Peter Parker's origin story and early days using the Spider-Man persona. The series is set in an alternate timeline to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's (MCU) main timeline, within the multiverse, where Peter gains his abilities through a temporal paradox caused by Dr. Strange.
The series includes characters such as Nico Minoru of the Runaways, Lonnie Lincoln, Amadeus Cho, and Harry Osborn.

Norman Osborn's Role
One of the key differences in this alternate timeline is the role of Norman Osborn. Instead of Tony Stark, Norman Osborn takes on the mentor role for Peter Parker. Concept art for the series depicts a scene reminiscent of "Captain America: Civil War", where Norman stands in Tony Stark's place in the Parker apartment, talking to Peter and Aunt May.
This change in mentorship significantly alters Peter's journey as Spider-Man. Norman's darker complexion compared to Peter and Aunt May hints at a different interpretation of the character, leaving fans to speculate on his true intentions and eventual transformation into the Green Goblin.
Norman Osborn's Character Traits
Despite his calm facade, Norman is very prideful and wants everything to go according to his plans. Norman cares deeply for Harry and only wants him to be strong enough to carry on the Osborn family legacy once he is gone. However, Norman's love for Harry has shown to be controlling, possessive even. Norman wanted to mold Harry into his image, having him expelled from Horizon High being the first step to his goal. Spider-Man's appearance would help push Harry and Norman's bond, for both Osborn's hated the wall-crawler.
Norman Osborn's Relationships
Before knowing Peter was going to Horizon High, Norman respected him as Harry's best friend and even offered him a place at Osborn Academy. As Spider-Man, he and Norman are (were) archenemies. In Generations, Norman reveals that he knew Peter was Spider-Man, though he doesn't reveal if he found out from having watched Horizon High surveillance footage from when he was recuperating or if Connor's told him after the doctor eavesdropped on Gwen, Anya, and Miles in Spider-Man Unmasked. Nevertheless, as the Dark Goblin, Norman was pleased he could fight Peter on equal, if not superior, ground.
Norman and Max are business rivals due to both being well known in the same profession. While Norman hired Toomes because he was a qualified scientist, it was his knowledge of Horizon High that led to the businessman to pay for his release from prison. While Toomes and Osborn shared snide remarks towards each throughout the beginning of the series, it was revealed during the Goblin Wars that Toomes loathed Osborn for claiming his Vulture gear and his giant mech as property of Oscorp.

Norman hired Smythe to get Harry kicked out of Horizon High so he could enroll him into Osborn Academy. Norman promised Smythe a teaching position at Oscorp, but either he changed his mind or the entire deal was a lie. Unlike his father, Norman appreciated Alistair's work on his own Spider-Slayers and the boy's eagerness to help him in goals to ruin Horizon High and Max Modell.
Raymond was a former employee of Norman who had to let go because of his erratic behavior and his idea to create a spider-powered army. Norman considered letting Raymond return to Oscorp after explaining to Norman about how a student from Horizon would undergo a transformation with one of his formulas.
While Norman approached Otto as a friend, he was actually attempting (and succeeding) to drive him away from Horizon High and into the ranks of Osborn Academy. As the second Spider-Man, Norman considers Miles an enemy and proof of the possibility of Raymond Warren's spider-soldier experiment.
As a Horizon High student, Norman most likely holds Gwen in the same category as Max Modell and the school. Norman and Jackal turned Jefferson into Swarm, hired him to join their team against Spider-Man, and run the Underground Monster League. Despite Jefferson not really being evil, he joined the group to defeat Spy-D (oblivious to the fact that he was his son Miles), who he hated for attracting the attention of Spencer and Alistair Smythe to his neighborhood.
Norman's Abilities
When being exposed to the Spider-Island gas after destroying Raymond Warren's experimental spiders, Norman developed an off-shoot of Spider-Man's powers. He was capable of doing everything Spider-Man can do with the addition of organic webbing. As the Dark Goblin, Norman had abilities similar to those of Venom, Carnage, and the Synthetic-Symbiote.
Peter Parker's Early Life and Transformation
At my old school, Parker was the kid everyone ignored until they wanted someone to copy from or shove in a locker. At school, Parker was often bullied for being a nerd and nobody talked to him unless they wanted to steal his work. Peter Parker grew up with his beloved Uncle Ben and Aunt May due to the death of his mother and imprisonment of his father. When he was 11 and a half years old, he was babysat by his neighbor Pearl Pangan, and he developed a crush on her until she moved out. At one point of his life, Peter would asked Ben to go to the beach at Coney Island six times, which resulted in him getting sunburned but not losing his enjoyment.
On the first day at Midtown High School, Parker woke up late and tried to reach the subway as fast as he could but missed it. While being frustrated at having missed the subway, May pulled up in her car to drive Peter to school, Peter tried arguing with her that she would be late to work, but she didn't mind since it was Peter's first day. After reaching the school, Peter said goodbye to May, but a portal suddenly opened through which a symbiote came out, the creature had been pursued by Doctor Strange, who had tried to contain it, but the symbiote started to attack the school, causing serious damage to the Midtown building.
As Parker was taking cover with May, the symbiote was teleported outside through one of Strange's portal and turned its attention towards a student, but Parker, not wanting to do nothing, distracted the creature by throwing a brick at it. Turning its attention to him, Parker nervously tried to dissuade it from attacking him until Strange grabbed on the symbiote, thanking Parker for the distraction as he flew back to the portal. Suddenly, Parker was bitten by a spider that came out of the portal, which had landed on his neck. The spider's venom caused Parker to pass out, when he came to, Aunt May was with him along with paramedics. However, Parker refused to go to the hospital because of the bill. May claimed it did not matter, but Peter argued that they had spent enough time in the hospital with Uncle Ben's hospitalation. Suddenly, Midtown High School exploded, causing the paramedic to have to check it out.
On the way home, May Parker picked up pizzas from Delmar's Deli-Grocery, making sure Peter did not go hungry while she was at work. Suddenly, Jerry knocked over boxes. Peter got a sudden urge and jumped out of the way holding Murph. That night, Peter and May Parker were at their home when there was a knock. Greeting May at the door was Susan O'Hara and Nico Minoru. O'Hara explained that she was Minoru's foster mother and wanted to say thank you for Peter helping Minoru that morning. While May and O'Hara talked, Peter and Minoru went up to his room. As Peter rambled on, he apologized for his nerdy behavior, but Minoru assured him that was not why she was quiet; she was just thinking about what happened at Midtown High School. She further explained that she thought moving from Los Angeles would be a new experience. Peter understood, citing his problems at his old school. Minoru talked further about the jeopardy of their future now that Midtown was closed. Peter jokingly said he liked it better when he believed he was boring Minoru.
Early Days as Spider-Man
At exactly 12:03 am, Parker stood outside Midtown High School waiting for Nico Minoru. When she finally arrived, Minoru got mad at Parker for scaring her. She then teased him for not wearing black to which Parker told her all he had was a black suit, which he was not going to wear. Inside, Parker found the explosion site and explained that the attack seemed to have happened before and the explosion was separate. As the two looked more, Minoru found out that the explosion was connected to a mob boss named Silvio Manfredi. Suddenly, the two heard talking from the Manfredi Crime Family which was walking down the halls. Minoru and Parker hid, but a flashlight dropped, alerting the family. Parker ran down the hall only to get to a dead end with a locked door. Effortlessly, Parker broke the chain and made it through. He then tried to run to the stairwell, only to be forced to stop due to a giant hole in the floor ahead. Parker found himself cornered, but miraculously fought his way out of the scuffle. Having no choice, Paulie shot at Parker, who ripped a piece of the wall off and used it as a shield. He then ran away and jumped off of the ceiling, figuring out he could do many acrobatic stunts. Now on the building, Parker witnessed his new powers and practiced with them. He found his balancing as well as wall-crawling. He chalked it up to the spider that bit him.
Later that night, Parker finally called Nico Minoru, who was less than glad to hear him on a call instead of a simple text. Parker suggested calling the police, but Minoru was smarter than that, saying that mobs always have a police or two in their pocket. Therefore, if they were to tell anyone, they would make targets of themselves as well as their families.
Trip's Tournament of Titans
Peter Parker attended Trip's Tournament of Titans under the name "Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" wearing an outfit that hid his identity. He became a part of the main event after convincing Trip he was the "real deal" before the tournament. He was annoyed when Trip left out the "Friendly Neighborhood" part when he announced his name. His opponent was Crusher Hogan who charged at him and soon managed to grab him, climbing to the top of the cage. However, Spider-Man managed to reverse the grapple, throwing Hogan out of the cage. He then realized he had thrown Hogan too hard so he quickly rolled and jumped to catch Hogan to save him from falling to death. Trip and Brent ran up to him, with Trip wanting to get him to sign the I.P. of Spider-Man over to him. Spider-Man left them saying they needed to send the prize money to his bank account. Hogan then charged at him again threatening him and lamenting that it must be a set-up, however, Spider-Man simply picked up and put him in a trash can.
New School and Challenges
Attending Rockford T. Almost two hours after the encounter with the robber, an amount of time Peter Parker found uncomfortable, Parker ran into Nico Minoru informing them they were assigned a new school. Parker worried they were assigned a strict Charles Dickens type school. Minoru was surprised by how jaded he sounded and then informed him that it was Rockford T. Bales High School, a more athletics-focused school that still had top-notch academics. As Minoru left him she commented on his garlic breath. However, the following Monday, as they walked to Rockford T. Bales High School, Parker said he needed to stop saying he was ready for something when he was not. He said it was like they were going to school at an Olympic village. Minoru pointed out that they probably smarter then all of them, however Parker said responded that the average of GPA 3.8. Parker then began talking about how they should just "keep their heads down", Trip interrupted. He yelled at him before asking if the parked Maserati was his. Trip explained that car was parked where he usually parked and as such he had to park under a tree, fearing birds from it would poop on his car. Meanwhile, Parker reminded himself to stay calm and that Trip only knows him as Spider-Man. Parker then informed him that he took the train and that he doesn't even have a driver's license. Brent then reminded him that they are the transfers from Midtown High School. Trip then began telling Parker that nobody was happy he was here and that he should stay out of the way of the "people who matter" to make it through the semester. Minoru then stepped in saying she recognized him before calling him a "Nepo Baby" and mocking the Trip's Tournament of Titans. Trip started yelling back at her before Minoru continued yelling about how all his friends were fake and just wanted to leech off him. The two boys fought as Parker and Minoru continued walking. Parker asked how she did that so she explained that she learned from Los Angeles to find out the "apex predators" and learn their weaknesses before entering their "hunting ground." Minoru continued to explain that he helped her at Midtown. They were good at looking out for each other and with their different smarts.
Developing Spider-Man's Gear and Abilities
Back at his residence, he brought several flammable material he planned to use for the webbing. May Parker commented on this so Peter lied saying it was for his home ec class and that he wanted to improve before he went to his new school. May said she wished they'd determine the new school already before leaving for work. Later, Peter was testing the Web Shooters in his room the webbing accidently exploded throughout the room. However, in Manhattan two days later, he had captured a robber in the webbing.
That night, Peter improved his Synthetic Webbing by making it non-stick to suit and tested it on his mask. He then swinged around the city, enjoying the sensation. Later, he had figured out the perfect amount of "thickiness" for the webbing and used it to stop a car that was about to crash. This was caught on the news. The next evening, Peter sat on the couch as May Parker apologized for the amount of night-shifts she had taken but Peter pointed out its not like they could hangout anyway due to the amount of catch-up work he had to do for Rockford T. Bales High School. He moved to his room before reflecting on lying to May about being Spider-Man and he decided to start wearing a hockey jersey as a standard part of his suit, due to it being more durable. He then decided that he needed a symbol and that the web-fluid tanks would need some getting used to. He then began patrolling around the city when he spotted Enforcers attacking a store owner, discovering he had Spider-Sense.
Conflict with the Enforcers
He stopped Ox from punching the store owner. He noticed the bystanders recording him and decided to wrap this fight up quickly so they would not get hurt. However, Ox and Fancy Dan started attacking him. He soon used his Spider-Sense to dodge Ox's attack before trapping Fancy Dan in a wide web spray. Spider-Man brawled with Ox till Montana came out the store and cut the tubes connecting the Web-Shooters to the web-fluid. The three of them then beat Spider-Man to the ground. The Enforcers continued to do this as they told him their group name. Spider-Man realized he was out of his league so he swept their feet and used his Spider-Sense to dodge their further attacks.
High School Life and Doubts
The next morning, Parker walked through the halls of Rockford T. Bales High School, carefully maneuvering his way through a crowd of students as they all mocked Spider-Man for running away from the fight with the Enforcers. He then ran into Coach Phil Grayfield who exclaimed in amazement before asking Parker about his bruises, to which he replied that he walked into his locker while looking at his phone. Grayfield praised Parker for how he avoided colliding with the crowd just moments ago and proposed that he try out for the school's junior varsity football team the following afternoon. Parker told the coach that he just transferred to Rockford and said he had to study a lot to prepare for college. That afternoon, Parker walked home with Nico Minoru, asking her if using an extra advantage to get into college would be cheating. Minoru replied that people do it every day, regardless of whether it is cheating or not, asking what Parker meant by "extra advantage." Parker lied, telling her that someone suggested he write essays about his Uncle Ben dying, saying that it felt wrong. He felt bad for lying to Minoru but told himself that he couldn't risk telling her anything in order to protect her from Spider-Man's enemies.
Set Up
At the meeting, attendees discussed how to reopen Midtown High, only to be interrupted by the Enforcers entering the room with Fancy Dan claiming to be interested in staying informed about the issue. Parker texted Minoru, shocked that the Enforcers were present after being caught on video fighting Spider-Man. Minoru told him to put in his ear buds and watch a video that showed the store owner from the night before claiming to be friends with the Enforcers and had a misunderstanding. He claimed that Spider-Man came out of nowhere and attacked them. As Parker realized he had been set up, all of the meeting attendees worriedly exited. Parker and Minoru followed, asking the meeting's spokesman what this meant for Midtown High. Soon, Spider-Man faced Michael Marko,…
