Navigating Scholarships and Financial Aid at Northwestern State University

Paying for college is a significant investment, and Northwestern State University (NSU) in Louisiana is committed to helping students make their education affordable. At NSU, scholarships help you lower the cost of your degree so you can focus on what matters-building a career, gaining real-world experience, and joining a community that’s cheering you on. Northwestern State University offers a comprehensive range of financial aid options, including federal and state grants, tuition and fee exemptions, scholarships, and loans, to support a diverse student body in achieving their educational goals.

Understanding the Cost of Attendance

Knowing what a school costs is Step #1 in managing college costs. The "Cost of Attendance" is the total amount of money the average student has to pay, WITHOUT any financial aid, to attend a particular school. Think of it as a school’s sticker price. The Cost of Attendance breakdown for Northwestern State University of Louisiana differs depending on whether you’re in-state or out-of-state student. Since Northwestern State is a public university, there are different costs for in-state students and out-of-state students. The sticker price at Northwestern State is $26,705 for in-state students in LA, and $37,493 for out-of-state students. Because Northwestern State University of Louisiana is an out-of-state public institution, you'd be paying $10120 more than if you were an in-state student. The cost of attendance can vary from year to year and will typically rise over your four years in college. College costs can look different for every student based on their financial situation.

Grants: Federal and State Support

Federal grants, such as Pell Grants and Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG), provide essential support to help make your education more affordable. The federal government awards Pell Grants to undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need by filling out the FAFSA. Students with a bachelor’s or professional degree are not eligible. Pell Grants do not be repaid. If you receive a Pell Grant, the award amount should remain consistent at any college you gain admission to.

State grants, including the Taylor Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS), provide valuable financial assistance for Louisiana residents. The TOPS program is a comprehensive, merit-based student aid program with multiple award components-each with its own eligibility criteria (Opportunity, Performance, Honors and Excellence Awards). TOPS encourages Louisiana residents to prepare for and pursue post-secondary education in the state, helping build a strong workforce for tomorrow.
