Understanding NYU Graduate Tuition Fees
Navigating the financial landscape of graduate education can be daunting. This article provides a detailed breakdown of tuition fees for graduate programs at New York University (NYU), specifically drawing upon information relevant to NYU Steinhardt and the School of Professional Studies (SPS). This guide aims to provide clarity on tuition costs, associated fees, and available financial aid options, empowering prospective and current students to make informed decisions about their educational investment.
Tuition and Fees Structure
NYU's graduate tuition is primarily calculated on a per-credit basis. In addition to tuition, students are also required to pay registration and service fees each semester. It is important to note that the Board of Trustees of New York University retains the authority to modify the fee schedule without prior notification.
Per-Credit Tuition
As a graduate student of NYU Steinhardt, your educational expenses are assessed each semester and are based on the number of credits (also known as "points") for which you register, as well as registration/student service fees.
For the 2025-2026 academic year, the tuition per credit is estimated to be $2,272.
Registration and Service Fees
Alongside the per-credit tuition, students incur registration and service fees each semester.

For the 2025-2026 academic year, the registration/service fee is $572 for the first credit and $79 for each additional credit per term/semester. January Term (J-Term) courses are not assessed registration/service fees.
Additional Mandatory Fees
All students registering for 6 or more credits in a semester are charged the Basic Student Health Insurance Plan. Waivers may be requested through the Student Insurance Office in the NYU Health Center.
Anticipating Future Costs
Educational costs are assessed each term and are based on the number of credits a student enrolls in per term. A moderate increase in tuition and registration/service fees is to be expected each academic year.
Financial Aid and Scholarship Opportunities
NYU offers a range of financial aid options, including scholarships, grants, and loans, to help students finance their graduate education. Grants and scholarships are financial aid that you don’t have to pay back. Most graduate scholarships are merit-based, though some may consider your financial circumstances. NYU SPS is rarely able to meet full financial need through scholarships and grants. We encourage students to seek out both SPS-based and external funding opportunities.
Merit-Based Scholarships
NYU SPS offers a merit-based scholarship that is awarded based on the application for admission; no additional application or FAFSA is required. Scholarship funding availability may be limited. To guarantee consideration, apply by the first round application deadline. This award is tuition-specific only and does not cover any additional fees or charges that you may incur. Students with tuition remission benefits through their employer may not be eligible for this scholarship, depending on the level of funding the program provides. All degree-bearing students at SPS are encouraged to apply (domestic and international students).

Departmental Scholarships
Some SPS graduate programs offer departmental scholarships based on financial need and/or academic merit. The majority of departmental awards are open to continuing students after a set number of credits are completed and academic merit in the program is established. Requirements and award amounts vary.
External Scholarship Opportunities
Students are encouraged to explore external funding opportunities to supplement NYU-based scholarships and grants.
Need-Based Aid
While NYU SPS is rarely able to meet full financial need through scholarships and grants, some departmental scholarships consider financial need alongside academic merit.
Loan Programs
In addition to scholarships and grants, students can explore federal and private loan options to finance their graduate education. Please think carefully about your obligations as a borrower prior to pursuing any educational loan.
Federal Student Loans
Federal student loan programs offer low-interest student loan options for US citizens and permanent residents. To apply for Federal student loans, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and add the NYU school code: 002785. More information about these loan programs including loan amounts, interest rates, and repayment plans can be found on the FAFSA website.

Private Loans
A variety of additional, private (non-federal) alternative loans are also available from lending institutions.
Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan
This credit-based loan is a supplement to the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan. *The Graduate Plus Loan will not be offered to students starting their program after July 1st, 2026 and beyond. In lieu of the Graduate Plus Loan, students will still have access to the Unsubsidized loan as well as private loans alternatives.
Special Programs and Considerations
NYU offers specific programs and considerations for certain student populations, including public service employees, military members, and veterans.
Public Service
NYU has a long-standing commitment to public service in local and global communities. We recognize and applaud the contributions of AmeriCorps volunteers. The Mayor's Graduate Scholarship Program (MGSP) is an opportunity for full-time New York City local government employees (employed by a City agency) to pursue graduate education. SPS provides scholarship awards from $1,000-$3,500 each semester to awardees for the duration of their graduate program.
Military Benefits and Veterans Affairs
Active-duty members of the military and their family members qualify for a range of military benefits and additional financial aid and scholarships. If you are in the military now, your unit may pay for your tuition if you attend college in your off-duty time. Once you understand your benefits, we can help you plan the best financial path for you. Military veterans and their family members qualify for a range of military benefits and additional financial aid and scholarships. NYU SPS is a proud participant in the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program, which provides scholarship assistance from the University and the US Department of Veterans Affairs. To qualify for the Yellow Ribbon Enhancement, you must apply to the VA. The VA will determine your eligibility for the Post-9/11 GI Bill and issue you a Certificate of Eligibility.
Students Based in India
Students who are physically based in India and taking online classes may be subject to India's Goods and Services tax (GST) and responsible for payment thereof relating to their NYU online class.
NYU SPS Graduate Appeal Funding
The NYU School of Professional Studies (NYU SPS) offers Graduate Appeal Funding to provide limited financial assistance to students. Applicants must complete at least one semester at NYU SPS to be eligible for funding. Please note that funds are awarded on a limited basis and are tuition-specific; they do not cover other expenses such as meal plans, textbooks, health insurance, or other costs associated with the overall cost of attendance.
Tisch School of the Arts
Tisch graduate students pay a flat fee tuition each academic year. In addition to tuition, students also pay registration/student service fees.
Budgeting and Cost Considerations
The following budget items vary depending on individual circumstances.
Health Insurance
All students registering for 6 or more credits in a semester are charged the Basic Student Health Insurance Plan. Waivers may be requested through the Student Insurance Office in the NYU Health Center.
