The College of Winterhold: A Center of Magic and Mystery in Skyrim

The College of Winterhold, a school of magic located in the northern cliffs of Winterhold in the province of Skyrim, stands as a beacon of arcane knowledge and a focal point of historical and cultural tension. Perched atop a tall ice formation, connected to the mainland by an ancient bridge, the College has weathered both natural disasters and political storms, maintaining its independence and attracting mages from across Tamriel.

A Bastion of Magic

The College of Winterhold is centered around a square with a pool of Magicka streaming out into a pillar and large statue of a young Shalidor. The main hall, known as the Hall of the Elements, serves as a practice ground for students honing their skills, whether mastering Fireball spells or Lesser Ward spells. Above the Hall lies The Arcanaeum, a vast collection of books dating back to the Merethic Era, containing invaluable information on the mystical Elder Scrolls. The Hall of Countenance and the Hall of Attainment provide living quarters for students and teachers, respectively.

Unlike the Mages Guild in other parts of Tamriel, the College of Winterhold is a resolutely independent establishment. While it is a selective institution, granting entrance only to those adept at the magical arts, once admitted, students enjoy greater freedom of experimentation. Even Necromancy is regarded as an acceptable arcane practice within the College's walls. This freedom, coupled with its extensive library and experienced faculty, has made the College a destination for mages seeking to expand their knowledge and push the boundaries of magical understanding.

History of Winterhold

Even though the Nords have lived in the region since they first embarked onto Tamriel, the story of Winterhold's origins has never been fully stated. In Mid Year of 1E 68, a ship from Atmora made landfall in Winterhold's quay after barely escaping with their lives. Though its people hesitated to bring them in, Jarl Kjalhund provided them with food and warmth. In the late years of Emperor Kastav's reign, the city of Winterhold openly rebelled against the Second Empire and Kastav ordered the Dragonguard to come in and quell the uprising. But the master of the Dragonguard refused his order on the grounds that it violated their Oath of Allegiance and they paid the price when their supplies were cut off. In their stead, an Akaviri warrior named Kalien was sent to personally stop the rebellion, which led to the city being sacked in 1E 2805 and a scar on the public's perception of the Dragonguard. Despite that, the rebellion ended on a high note when the newly-named Emperor, Reman II ended it swiftly and made peace with the Nords.

During the Imperial Simulacrum in the late Third Era, the city-state of Winterhold was an active settlement. It was ruled by King Erarne and had a rivalry with Dawnstar and Windhelm. After they acquired their first piece of the Staff of Chaos from Hammerfell, the Eternal Champion traveled northeast into Skyrim to find the second piece in a place called the Labyrinthian. Their quest eventually brought them to the local Mages Guild in Winterhold, where they met the leader, Thelen Kaarn.

The Great Collapse and its Aftermath

During the Oblivion Crisis in 3E 433, the city of Winterhold flourished with a new renaissance of power and wealth. Several refugees from Morrowind travel to Winterhold and bring their culture into the city as well as their old mercantile spirit. Scholars from all over Tamriel went to the College of Winterhold to bring books since the Ysmir Collective was established in the College.

Winterhold's fortunes took a dramatic turn in 4E 122 with the Great Collapse. Much of the city collapsed into the sea, leaving the College of Winterhold as one of the few structures left unharmed. This prompted suspicion among many citizens of Winterhold, who believed that the institution may have had a hand in the collapse. The Jarl's council blamed them as the cause of the disaster. Rumors started to spread across the settlement and the then Arch-Mage, Deneth wrote personally to the Jarl to protest the accusation. Despite Deneth's claims, rumors persisted throughout the years, and people slowly left Winterhold until it was nigh a ghost town.

Despite the fallen prestige after the Great Collapse, several high-profile mages study at the College. Some of these mages include the Conjuration instructor Phinis Gestor, who was said to be one of the greatest conjurers in all of Skyrim, and Tolfdir, the seemingly foolish Alteration professor that is actually one of the best Alteration scholars in all of Tamriel. In addition, the mage Arniel Gane was a researcher of Dwemer artifacts that managed to use Keening, one of Kagrenac's Tools, in conjunction with a specially designed Soul Gem to recreate the events surrounding the disappearance of the Dwemer.

The Dragon Crisis and the Eye of Magnus

During the Dragon Crisis in 4E 201, the Arch-Mage of the College was Savos Aren, and the Master Wizard was Mirabelle Ervine. Members of the College led by Tolfdir traveled to the ancient city of Saarthal to study the Atmoran architecture. Deep within Saarthal was a device called the Eye of Magnus, it had the ability to disperse large quantities of Magicka and was considered very powerful and dangerous.

In 4E 201, the College discovered the ruins of Saarthal and found the Eye of Magnus, revealing ancient secrets of such great magnitude that members of the Psijic Order returned to Mundus and journeyed to the College for a rare intervention into the affairs of Tamriel. While one of their initiates left to try to discover the location of the Staff of Magnus, the Thalmor agent Ancano tampered with the Eye and created a powerful barrier inside the college's Hall of Elements. To quell the dangers it poses, an aspiring student of the College traveled to the vast ruins of the Labyrinthian to find the Staff of Magnus after an adventure in Mzulft. Ancano, an agent of the Thalmor was tampering with the Eye of Magnus and caused a magical explosion on the campus, including the ruined city of Winterhold. After dealing with the threat in the city, the student used the Staff of Magnus and weakened Ancano. They eventually defeated him and saved the college.

Cultural Tensions and the Dunmer Influence

The influx of Dunmer refugees following the Red Year in Morrowind brought new cultural dynamics to Winterhold. With Winterhold be the main point of interaction between Dunmeri and Nordic people, this has lead to the city to having a unique architecture that has a mix of Nordic influence and Dunmeri. Large stone Nordic buildings decorated with Dunmeri salt lamps, Dunmer and Nord items being sold on market stalls. We have second generation dunmeri saying sera much more open-minded, and charming saying muth-sera and sera very casually, drinking mead alongside sujamma. Nord men and women getting, for the lack of a better term, “ash fever”. Essentially Winterhold in alcohol terms is a mix of vodka and sake drink; combination of dunmeri and Nordic cultures creating this collision and synthesis of culture and pidgin langauge like Spain-glish, Lousiana French, or Texas German. In the countryside there would be Nord farmers now planting specialty crops such as ash yam, Dunmer hedge mages working and helping with researcher, helping crops grow better, and even some ashlander farmer hands. Cute things like a Norse man (or woman) looking to earn the hand of dunmeri lover. Have a chef for looking dunmeri culture asking you to find someone willing to sell him a supply of ash yam for his new dish. Specialty shops for dunmeri goods in dumeri sections of town, pawnshops selling Nordic and Dunmer wares. Essentially having stores having a mixture of Nord and Dunmer equipment. Architecture wise, there would be dunmer ornaments and silver wear hanging around alongside Nordic buildinds. Maybe have a section where Dunmeri influence is high, with signs looking like those in Vvardenfell, with an informal Temple tucked away for immigrants and refugees from the blightstorms. Then we have outside world in witch camps of Dunmer refugees have been set up.

However interaction between two cultures has high potential for conflict, and Winterhold is no exception. The current standing community of this Old Hold are ambivalent of the new refugees and immigrants, especially the Hlaalu merchants who has been buying up land from war-veterans who are sufferings from skooma and moon-sugar addictions or buying land left behind by young sons and daughters who have left for the Empire who never returned and the elderly who has succumbed to the passage of time. This can take place in different forms; a drunk, broke Nord trying to start a fight with a Dunmer refugee. Old school scholars at the College of Winterhold being outdone by new upstart dunmer apprentices. New dunmeri not integrating with mainstream Nord culture. Some things like a drunk Nord harassing a dunmer family every night and the player has to persuade the Nord to piss off and leave them alone. A rich dunmer merchant looking at buying up a local farm that belonged to a recently deceased farmer. The farm hand is furious because he rightly believes it belongs to him as the farrmer gave him his word. Essentially we would have culturally conflicts between new immigrants and the older Nordic population. Maybe even have a Romeo and Juliet quest? With the original ending? Overall the conflict between the elves and Nords has to be believable and grounded. In the City of Winterhold, the Ash Quarters would be wooden buildings made beautiful using decoration such as lamps tapestries. Have camps of Ashlander refugee destroyed, possibly script NPCs arriving at night in the Ash Quarters. Dunmer having little shines to ancestors in their homes.

Winterhold Hold

Winterhold (also spelled out as Winter Hold) is one of the nine major cities in the province of Skyrim, and it serves as the capital city of the eponymous hold, Winterhold. Winterhold is located at the end of the one road that runs through the region, which wraps around the mountains and runs along the northeast coast. The scope of Winterhold and its districts before it was destroyed has never been detailed, but after the Great Collapse, the former capital city was reduced to a set of homes on the main thoroughfare. The only remaining buildings in the town were the Jarl's Longhouse, the local inn across the road, a couple of homes along the mountain, and the College of Winterhold, which remained intact despite the destruction. Homes that are behind the street and closer to the edge of the cape are completely destroyed and encased in snow. A path between the Jarl's Longhouse and the General Goods Store leads uphill into the greater Winterhold wilderness, while a northwestern path leads under the bridge to the college, then wraps around the mountain.

The common folk of the Winterhold region are seasoned fishermen that have grown accustomed to the harsh winters and even though the land offers little for grazing, they have managed to make due successfully with food. One of the most lauded pieces of food to come out of the hold is Ghostflesh, their regional cheese dish. The cheese is made from the little supply of dairy they have, it is then smoked over a pile of dried seaweed, and then wrapped into a pastry made from flour and horker's suet. It is then baked to the point that the cheese is molten and steamy and that the crust is light and flaky.

Many stories and myths from early Nordic history originated from Winterhold. The local skald tell the tale of Ahzidal, the first great Nordic enchanter, who spent the rest of his life attaining every bit of arcane knowledge to expand his prowess. He offered his skills to the Five Hundred Companions and later became a priest in the Dragon Cult. Ever since he sought knowledge in Oblivion, he was never seen again. Another legend revolves around the last Atmoran "invasion" of Skyrim, two ships of survivors, largely filled with dead passengers. Their descriptions of Atmora have changed drastically over the years. One of these ships reached Winterhold claiming that the Frostfall that took the continent was conjured by the Snow Elves. The Nords of Winterhold favor six-foot-long axes.

Winterhold's symbol, a three-pointed crown was recreated as a small bronze adornment called Anthor's Shadow Crown. It was worn by the master of hidden arcane knowledge in the city and some people even say that it never saw use in anything other than secret meetings, but the Second Era author, Taleon Mythmaker doubts it. Other similar adornments are the Dawn's Eye Crown, which features the eye of Winterhold's college and the Shrouded Crown. The Wolfhounds of Winterhold have lighter and fluffier coats, compared to their cousins in the south.
