Gaining acceptance into pharmacy school is a challenging yet rewarding endeavor. The path to becoming a pharmacist involves rigorous academic preparation and a commitment to the healthcare field. Academic Foundations: GPA Requirements

While acceptance rates to pharmacy school have increased in recent years, candidates are still held to very high academic standards. A strong GPA is a critical component of a successful pharmacy school application.

Most pharmacy schools require applicants to have a minimum academic GPA of 2.5 or higher. However, it's important to note that GPA requirements can vary from school to school. Some institutions may have higher GPA expectations, and a more competitive GPA can significantly increase your chances of admission.

Science GPA

Many pharmacy schools place particular emphasis on the GPA calculated from all science courses. This is determined by calculating the GPA from all science courses. A strong science GPA demonstrates your aptitude for the demanding scientific coursework in pharmacy school.

Holistic Review

Although grade point average is an important factor, it is not the sole reason for acceptance. In addition to intellectual and academic competence, the School's admissions committee considers communication skills, leadership ability, community service, health care-related or research experience, and motivation for pursuing a career in pharmacy. Pharmacy schools evaluate candidates holistically and look for relevant experience and demonstrated leadership capabilities.

The UCSF School of Pharmacy is committed to admitting PharmD students who have diverse cultural, economic, and social backgrounds. On occasions, the minimum GPA requirement has been waived for extenuating circumstances.

Prerequisite Coursework: Building a Solid Foundation

For pharmacy schools that don't require a bachelor's degree, a certain amount of prerequisite courses are required to apply. Completing the necessary prerequisite coursework is essential for demonstrating your readiness for the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program.

To be considered for admission into the Doctor of Pharmacy program at the Texas A&M Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy, applicants are required to complete a minimum of 71 semester credit hours of prerequisite coursework at an accredited college or university. All prerequisites must be satisfied with course work approved by the Office of Student Affairs and must be completed prior to July 1 of the year of entry into the program. It is your responsibility to verify if your course work is approved to meet our prerequisites.

Applications lacking one or more prerequisites are considered if the applicant is enrolled in, or plans to enroll in, courses that fulfill missing prerequisites.

Core Science Courses

BCPM (Life & Physical Sciences and Math) prerequisite coursework completed five or more calendar years prior to applying must be retaken unless the applicant has earned a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree.

BCPM pre-requisite coursework includes General Biology I & II with Lab, Microbiology with Lab, Molecular Biology or Genetics, General Chemistry I & II with Lab, Organic Chemistry I & II with Lab, College Physics I with Lab, Calculus I, and Statistics.

Coursework Considerations

At public institutions in Florida, the course prefix and last three digits of a course number will match exactly among institutions even though the course title may vary.

In-class lecture and lab formats are preferable for the completion of preprofessional coursework. Online preprofessional coursework involving sciences with labs may be accepted. All non-UF students who have applied for admission into the UF Pharm.D. program and want to take Biochemistry online as non-degree seeking should apply here. It is important that you include in the comments section that you are applying to the UF Pharm.D program. Please also notify the PharmD admissions team when you have submitted your application.

Additionally, a grade of C or higher must be earned in all prerequisite coursework (71-72 sch). Grades of C- “C-minus” are not accepted. The college will only accept prerequisite courses dedicated to science majors only. Students completing their prerequisite coursework at a different university than Texas A&M may take courses under different course names and numbers than presented above.

The Associate of Arts or Science (A.A./A.S.) Degree

Earning an Associate of Arts or Science (A.A./A.S.) degree, which includes the required pre-professional coursework, is the minimum requirement and a fantastic stepping stone to your future. This degree not only provides you with essential skills and knowledge but also enhances your qualifications for further studies and career opportunities. If your university doesn’t offer an A.A. or A.S. degree, you’ll need to complete the necessary pre-professional coursework along with 36 credit hours of state-required general education credits. Letters of Recommendation: Seeking Endorsements

Two letters are required from separate references. Letters should be from individuals who know you professionally and/or academically. Letters should address the applicant’s performance in a pharmacy practice setting and/or in an academically demanding/rigorous course. While an old friend from high school may speak rather highly of you, pharmacy school admissions committees like to see evaluations from academic-based influence from your life, like a faculty member or an employer in one of those healthcare-related positions above.

Extracurricular Activities and Experience: Demonstrating Well-Roundedness

Examples include involvement in student organizations, community service, volunteering and work experience. An impressive portfolio of relevant work and/or volunteer experience can help give your pharmacy school application a unique edge. Admissions committees look for well-rounded candidates that have shown demonstrated initiative to gain valuable experience in the healthcare realm.

Application Deadlines and Deposits

Applicants must apply by October 1, 2025 and receive an offer of admissions by December 1, 2025 to be considered for the $250 priority application seat deposit.

International Applicants

Lawful Permanent Resident are classified as international applicants by Texas A&M University. A foreign credentials transcript evaluation for each international transcript must be sent electronically (no paper transcripts will be accepted) directly to PharmCAS. A degree statement, original diploma, or any official proof of degree awarded from each international institution attended.

Transfer Students

Students enrolled in a PharmD program at another college or college of pharmacy, may apply to transfer into the PharmD program at the Texas A&M Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy. A personal statement detailing the reason or reasons for applying for a transfer. An official transcript from the current school or college of pharmacy. Official transcripts from institutions where pre-pharmacy coursework was completed. An official PCAT score. The Rangel College of Pharmacy may request a syllabus for each pharmacy course completed at the current school or college of pharmacy. The transfer application, supporting documentation and processing fee of $100 must be submitted by Feb. 1 of the year the student wishes to transfer. Because of differences in pharmacy programs, there is no guarantee a transfer student will enter the PharmD program at the Rangel College of Pharmacy with the same classification.

Interview Process

Admissions interviews follow the MuItiple Mini-Interview (MMI) format. MMI is a process where applicants interview with multiple faculty at different stations. A question or scenario is presented to the applicant just prior to entering the station. The Texas A&M Rangel College of Pharmacy expects students to be professional and to conduct themselves accordingly. Business professional attire consist of full-length dress pants, dress shirt with a tie, socks and dress shoes for men.

Essential Functions

Candidates for the Doctor of Pharmacy degree must be able to perform the essential functions in each of the following categories: Observation, Communication, Motor, Intellectual, and Behavior/Social. However, it is recognized that degrees of ability vary among individuals. Individuals are encouraged to discuss their disabilities with the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and consider technological and other facilitating mechanisms needed in order to train and function effectively as a pharmacist. The UF College of Pharmacy is committed to enabling its students by any reasonable means or accommodations to complete the course of study leading to the Doctor of Pharmacy degree.

Background Checks

UCSF reserves the right to rescind an offer of admission to any individual whose background check reveals unprofessional conduct inconsistent with the high standards of the pharmacy profession or issues that may preclude an individual from participating in Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) or Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs). Under these circumstances, the Admissions Committee will review the application and provide a recommendation to the Vice Dean for Education. The Vice Dean for Education may revoke an offer of admission based upon this review.

Additional Information

PharmCAS and the University of Florida College of Pharmacy do not grant grade forgiveness. The UF College of Pharmacy does not have a time limit on when academic work would not be acceptable. Due to the structure of our curriculum, we do not accept transfer students. Our curriculum is block-style, with patient care courses early in the curriculum.

Minimum Eligibility

In order to have your application materials accepted for review, you must be able to first verify that you meet certain minimum eligibility requirements. To be eligible to apply, applicants must have a minimum, cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.80 as calculated by PharmCAS as of the UCSF PharmCAS application deadline.
